Why Would God Choose Someone Like Me? (The Gospel of John 3:30)

What happens when we stop making it about us and start making it all about Jesus? In this episode of Heart Check Podcast, Pastor Los dives into one of the most powerful and challenging verses in the Gospel of John: “He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.” — John 3:30 (NLT) John the Baptist’s disciples were concerned because more people were following Jesus than John. But John understood something that every follower of Jesus—and especially every Christian leader—needs to remember: the goal was never to build our platform. The goal is to point people to Jesus. Pastor Los gets real about his own journey into ministry, wrestling with feelings of inadequacy, his past, his failures, and the question, “Who am I to do this?” Through 1 Corinthians 1:26–31, we’re reminded that God doesn’t call us because we have everything figured out. He chooses ordinary, unlikely, and imperfect people so that He gets the glory. This episode is a reminder that “less of me” doesn’t mean thinking less of yourself. It means recognizing who lives inside of you. The power isn’t in our strength, our intelligence, our abilities, our platform, or our accomplishments. It’s Jesus in us. So whether you’re leading a ministry, walking through a season of singleness, questioning your calling, struggling with your past, or simply trying to follow Jesus faithfully, this episode is an invitation to surrender again: Jesus, become greater and greater in me, and let me become less and less. Are you becoming more focused on yourself, your platform, your success, and what people think of you—or are you becoming more focused on Jesus? He must become greater.I must become less. Welcome to Heart Check Podcast—Real-Life Theology for everyday life. A place to belong, be known, and become more like Jesus. If this episode encouraged you, share it with someone who needs the reminder that it’s not about them—it’s all about Jesus.

Jesus Raises the Bar on Murder | The 6th Commandment

“You must not murder.” - Exodus 20:13 At first glance, the sixth commandment seems pretty straightforward. Most of us hear it and think, “Well, I haven't murdered anybody, so I'm good.” But when Jesus teaches on this commandment in Matthew 5, He raises the bar. Jesus shows us that God isn't only concerned with our outward actions—He's concerned with what's happening inside our hearts. In this episode of Heart Check Podcast, Pastor Los dives into the sixth commandment and asks a question that might make all of us uncomfortable: Who am I murdering in my heart? What does it look like to carry contempt, bitterness, resentment, unforgiveness, pride, or a cold shoulder toward someone? And what happens when we allow those things to take root in our hearts? As followers of Jesus, we're called to something higher. We're called to love God and love others, to see people as image-bearers of God, and to reflect Jesus everywhere we go. Jesus doesn't just want us to look holy on the outside. He wants to transform us from the inside out. This episode is an invitation to slow down, examine your heart, and ask the Holy Spirit: “God, is there anyone I'm holding anger, bitterness, or contempt toward that I need to surrender to You?” Because when Jesus has our hearts, His love should overflow into the way we treat the people around us. Heart Check:Are there people you're treating differently because of what's happening in your heart toward them? Have you surrendered that hurt, anger, bitterness, or unforgiveness to Jesus? Jesus raises the bar. It's not just about what we do on the outside. It's about who we are on the inside.

    The Gospel of John (2:23-3:21)

Many people believe in Jesus because of what He can do—but have they truly surrendered to who He is? In Episode 30 of Heart Check Podcast, Pastor Los dives into one of the most life-changing conversations in all of Scripture: Jesus' encounter with Nicodemus. While John 3:16 may be one of the most recognized verses in the Bible, it's often separated from the conversation that gives it its full meaning. Jesus wasn't speaking to an atheist or someone far from God—He was speaking to one of the most religious men in Israel. Through this powerful conversation, Jesus reveals that salvation isn't found in religion, good works, church attendance, family heritage, or follow the Law. It's found in being born again through faith in Him. Together we'll unpack: • Why Jesus doesn't just want fans—He desires true followers.
 • The difference between religion and a real relationship with Jesus.
 • What it actually means to be born again.
 • Why salvation is received by grace through faith—not earned by our efforts.
 • The significance of the bronze serpent and how it points directly to Jesus.
 • The deeper meaning behind John 3:16 and God's incredible love for the world.
 • Why people often run from the Light—and how true healing begins when we bring everything into Christ's presence. This passage reminds us that Jesus didn't come to make bad people behave better—He came to make spiritually dead people spiritually alive. He isn't offering a slightly improved life; He's offering an entirely new one. Are you trusting in religion, your good works, or your church attendance… or have you truly been born again through faith in Jesus? Do you simply love what Jesus can do for you, or do you love Him for who He is? Grab your Bible, your journal, and let's continue walking verse-by-verse through the Gospel of John as we discover the life-changing truth of the Gospel together.

Battling Depression: How God Meets Us in Our Hopelessness

In this episode of Heart Check Podcast, Pastor Los steps away from our Gospel of John series and spends time in 1 Kings 19, looking at the life of Elijah—a man who experienced some of the greatest moments of God’s power, yet found himself in a place of fear, exhaustion, loneliness, and hopelessness. Elijah’s story reminds us that even faithful followers of God can experience seasons of deep struggle. Depression doesn’t mean you’ve failed God. Feeling overwhelmed doesn’t mean your faith is gone. And your valley doesn’t mean God has left you. In this episode, we’ll talk about: The warning signs that can lead us toward emotional and spiritual exhaustion. Why the enemy wants us isolated and convinced that we have to carry our struggles alone. How our thoughts can become filled with lies when we lose sight of God’s truth. How God responds to Elijah’s pain with compassion, care, and presence. Why rest, community, and returning to God’s presence are essential when we feel empty. The reminder that if God still has breath in your lungs, He still has purpose for your life. If you are struggling with depression, feeling hopeless, or wondering if God is still with you in your darkest moments, my prayer is that this episode reminds you of this truth: You are not alone. God sees you. God cares for you. And God is not finished writing your story. Jesus never promised that we would avoid every valley—but He promised we would never walk through them alone. Join me as we look at Elijah’s story and discover the hope, healing, and purpose that can only be found in Christ.
