The Book of Jonah Isn't About the Fish

What do you do when God's word to you is clear — and you just don't like it? In this message, we open the book of Jonah and find out the fish was never the point. Jonah is four chapters, one page, and the main character isn't the prophet — it's God. His grace pursues a rebellious prophet, a boat of pagan sailors, and one of the most violent cities in the ancient world. Most prophetic books are about the message the prophet delivers. Jonah's sermon is five words long. This book is about the prophet himself, and what God is willing to do to change his heart. You'll learn: Why Jonah's problem was never a lack of clarity from God What Nineveh actually was, and why the assignment was unthinkable How the meaning of Jonah's own name sets up the irony of the whole book Why God is working through you and on you at the same time What it looks like to stop running with your feet but keep running in your heart Jonah knew exactly who God was — gracious, compassionate, slow to anger. That's the reason he ran. He didn't want Nineveh to get what he wanted for himself. Over the next several weeks we're going to find out there's no place any of us can run where grace doesn't follow. Key Scriptures: Jonah 1:1-3, Jonah 3:4, Jonah 4:1-2, Romans 10:9, Romans 10:13 0:00   Not a fish story 6:25   God works on Jonah 11:49  Clear word, unwilling heart 17:52  Nineveh and the grace Jonah feared 23:22  Prayer and invitation We're glad you are joining us today!
