Ageism Survival Guide

John Stech

"Youth runs fast, but age knows the terrain." Age discrimination and age bias are woven into the fabric of modern work culture, shaping decisions most people never see and too many experience firsthand. For millions of older workers, the message is subtle but unmistakable: you are no longer valued. This podcast exists to challenge that message, expose ageism in the workplace, confront the systems that perpetuate it, and reclaim the dignity, confidence, and career power that professionals over fifty have earned. My name is John Stech. I spent my corporate career with four global automakers, working on five continents and witnessing ageism from both sides of the table. I have seen how organizations justify pushing out older workers, and I have seen the extraordinary value those same workers bring to teams, culture, and long-term success. After watching dozens of friends and former colleagues pushed out of their careers during 2025, I decided to do something about it. I started The Ageism Survival Guide. This podcast tells the truth about what it feels like to be pushed aside, underestimated, or quietly removed from opportunities because of age. We explore the realities of layoffs, forced early retirement, workplace retaliation, severance negotiation, and the sidelining professionals over 50 endure. These are structural patterns rooted in corporate bias and a culture that worships youth while ignoring the wisdom, resilience, and strategic insight that only experience can produce. Here, we talk openly about the shock of job loss, the grief that follows, and rebuilding self-respect after workplace discrimination. We examine how ageism damages identity, confidence, and financial stability, and offer tools to withstand it. You will learn strategies for navigating a job search over 50, optimizing your LinkedIn profile, exploring encore careers, and designing a career change over 50 that reflects your worth. Corporations often label older employees as too expensive, too slow, or not adaptable enough. They are wrong. Years of crisis management, leadership, problem-solving, and lived experience create instincts that cannot be taught in a classroom or downloaded from a training module. The gut feelings developed over decades are not liabilities. They are competitive advantages. The Ageism Survival Guide is your companion through the storm. Together, we expose the truth, rebuild what was broken, and create a better life on our own terms.

Layoffs: Who Decides Who Goes and How?

If you still believe layoffs start with low performers, this episode will change the way you read every company announcement. The number comes first. The names come second. Host John Stech has sat in the management meetings where names got attached to a target, and in this episode he walks you through the chain most employees never see. Finance sets a headcount and payroll target when the quarter turns red. HR builds the proposal and draws the circle that lawyers call the decisional unit. Then the management team meets to finalize who stays and who goes. You will hear how companies actually rank people once the list begins, including position elimination, skills matrices that label experienced workers as legacy, salary band sorting, stack ranking inside a narrow group, and location filters. John also decodes the euphemisms, including the phrase “competence shift” that his company used and how it moved older workers out of tech-related roles. Then he breaks down the two main voluntary offers, what employers are required to disclose to people over 40, what happens when not enough people volunteer, and how the people left behind absorb the damage. Most important, you will leave with the steps you can still control. What to save before a rumor becomes a meeting. Which documents to read instead of the summary. When to get your own advice before you sign. And how to build proof of your value while you still have access to the systems that hold it. Protection is rarely perfect, but preparation is not optional. Pushed Out After 50? The Truth About PIPs, Layoffs and Ageism

Back To The Origin: Why I Started Ageism Survival Guide Have you ever walked into work and felt invisible? Not fired. Not warned. Just quietly erased? That is not in your head. That is ageism. And in 2025 it blew up all around us. I did not start Ageism Survival Guide for fun. I started it because my phone would not stop ringing. A wave of layoffs and forced early retirements hit good people in 2025. People with mortgages, kids in college, and 25 years of wins behind them started asking me what I did when it happened to me in 2020, what to say in interviews, and what to do next. This channel started as a peer response to that moment, because youth runs fast, but age knows the terrain, and people over 50 needed to hear that. In this episode we go back to the beginning to name what really pushes experienced workers out. It is not performance. It is a pattern. I break down 5 different patterns companies use, with real examples you will instantly recognize from office life. You will hear about 2 of them right here in the description as a preview: How they talk to you. The backhanded compliments like you are so good on Zoom for your age, and calls for fresh blood that label you instead of praise you. Deleted without being deleted. Building the client report for 10 years, then the invite stops coming while they still keep your work, and you lose your chair.Listen to the episode to hear all 5 patterns, why they are so damaging for professionals over 50, and how they connect as one pushout playbook. If you have lived any of these, you are not alone and you are not done. I want you to drop a comment below and tell me which one hit you first. Please subscribe so we can keep building a community that gets it, and share this with someone over 50 who needs to hear it. It is not legal advice. If you are facing a PIP or an early retirement offer, save your reviews, save your emails, take notes with dates and names, and consider speaking with an employment attorney.

New platform data suggests up to 30 percent of listings on major job boards may be ghost jobs. These are real looking posts with no current plan to hire. In this episode, John Stech breaks down what ghost jobs are, why companies post them, and why they hit job seekers over 50 the hardest. Should You Expose LinkedIn's Green Open to Work Frame?

Should I expose it? What will my former colleagues think? What will my friends think? Can they ever unsee it once I have exposed myself? Wait... what do you think I am talking about? I am talking about the green Open to Work frame on your LinkedIn profile. What were you thinking? In this week's episode of the Ageism Survival Guide, we take on one of the most debated LinkedIn choices for job seekers over 50. Is that green badge helping you get hired, or quietly hurting your search? Most people think they are choosing a photo style. You are actually choosing who gets to see that you are looking. That one choice can affect recruiter outreach, referrals from your network, privacy if you are still employed, and how hiring managers read your experience. We are keeping the details light here on purpose. You will want to hear the full conversation inside the episode, including the tradeoff between going public and staying visible to recruiters only, and what it means when you are navigating age bias. Want the step by step setup? This topic is also the subject of this week's blog on our website. The blog covers the same green frame debate, plus full details on how to activate each Open to Work setting in LinkedIn so you can set it with confidence. How to Network on LinkedIn After 50

Most professionals over 50 are sitting on a hidden network inside LinkedIn and never realize it is there. It is not in job postings or cold applications. It is in Past Company filters, Alumni tools, People tabs, second degree bridges, groups, events, and profile signals that LinkedIn built for networking but few people ever use correctly. If cold applying has left you with silence, this episode shows you a better path. Your 20 or 30 years of experience already built the network. This is how to find it, reactivate it, and leverage it without feeling awkward or pushy. In this 24-minute episode you will uncover 7 layers of LinkedIn networking that you can use immediately. These 7 are demonstrated step by step on screen with exact clicks and copy and paste outreach templates. THE 7 LAYERS COVERED IN THIS EPISODE Layer 1: Former Colleagues and Bosses, Your Warmest Asset:  How to use Search, Company Page, People, Filters, Past Company to find every person who ever worked where you worked. How to warm them with a follow and thoughtful comment first, then send a connection note, then request a 15-minute perspective call 3 to 5 days after they accept. Layer 2: Former Clients, Vendors, and Partners: How to find people you helped solve problems for through Company Page People filters or your own Connections filtered by Company. How to lead your note with the outcome you delivered and ask for insight after they connect. Layer 3: University Alumni Tool, The Highest Response Rate:  How to use linkedin.com/school/ filter and the Where They Work filter to equal your Target Company. Why alumni accept at 2 to 3 times the rate of cold outreach and how to use one specific detail from their profile in your note. Layer 4: Target Company Mapping With the People Tab: How to use any Target Company Page, People, All People, Filters, Title and Location, then sort by Connection Degree to prioritize second degree connections. How to ask a mutual for a warm introduction first and what to do when no introduction comes in 3 days. How to spot active profiles in the Activity section. Layer 5: Second Degree Loops: How to use People Also Viewed on desktop or More Profiles on mobile on any strong target profile to reveal 8 more people like them and repeat the filter process. Layer 6: Groups, Events, and Commenters: How to join 2 to 3 active LinkedIn Groups, engage on LinkedIn Events attendee lists, and turn post commenters from target companies and influencers into warm connections by adding a 2 to 3 sentence insight before you invite. Layer 7: Profile Viewers and the Leverage System: How to use Me (my profile), View Profile, Analytics, Profile Views to turn recent viewers from the last 7 days into conversations. Plus the 3-step Leverage System after any connection accepts: thanks within 24 hours with no ask, insight request 2 to 3 days later, and a structured 15 minute call with three questions that naturally leads to an introduction. These 7 layers are only a small sampling of the total 32 distinct ways to reach, build, and leverage your network on LinkedIn that we mapped in our research. You cannot cover all 32 in one short episode without getting overwhelmed, so we built the complete checklist for you.
