The Spiritual Works of Mercy - Part 2 of 2

Part two of our series on the works of mercy. Last episode covered the corporal works. This time Fr. Lomnitzer and Charles take on the seven spiritual works of mercy: instruct the ignorant, counsel the doubtful, admonish sinners, bear wrongs patiently, forgive offenses willingly, comfort the afflicted, and pray for the living and the dead. They talk about why ignorance lowers culpability but doesn't excuse us from learning the faith, and how to correct someone without just trying to win the argument. They also cover why doubt, about your faith or about yourself, is something to face instead of run from. Father explains why sin works like a check engine light in the confessional: it's a symptom that points to something deeper. He also unpacks what we're really asking for when we pray "as we forgive those who trespass against us." Then they discuss why showing up matters more than finding the right words when someone is suffering, and why prayers for the dead are never wasted. Many of these works also happen at the office: training a coworker who doesn't know the process, giving feedback that helps someone improve, and letting it go when someone else takes the credit. Also in this episode: an argument over whether coffee breaks the Eucharistic fast, Bob Newhart's "Stop It" sketch, and Charles's proposal for a new religious order.
