Episode 62: When the Goal Doesn't Happen: Finding Joy in the Build with Deb

What happens when you do everything right in training... and race day still doesn't give you the result you worked for? In this episode, I'm joined by marathoner, mom of three, and high school teacher Deb, just days after completing her fifth marathon at Georgina. Deb went into the race after one of her strongest training builds yet, with hopes of finally earning her Boston qualifying time. But when her body stopped responding the way it had in training, her goals had to change. We talk honestly about the disappointment that comes when the result doesn't match the work, while also making space to celebrate everything the build gave her. Because the build is a win, too. But my favourite part of Deb's story might be what happened when her time goals disappeared. Instead of walking away, she chose a different goal: “I can't reach my time goal, but I will reach my joy goal.” We also talk about her very long hair 😂 and the promise she made not to cut it until she gets to Boston, what she's learned from five marathons and a previous DNF, how she fits training around teaching and raising three kids, and why she intentionally teaches her students that failure is feedback, not something to erase. This conversation is about running, but it's really about something bigger: How do we keep believing in a dream when it's taking longer than we thought? How do we allow ourselves to be disappointed without letting one outcome define us? And how might the person we're becoming along the way be just as important as the finish line? As Deb says at the end of our conversation: “Your value as a person does not depend on the time on the clock.” Follow Deb on Instagram: @pinkrunner_

    Episode 60: The Wrong Question

One of the most common questions I hear as a physiotherapist is: "How many treatments does my insurance cover?" After more than 15 years of practice, I've come to believe that it's the wrong first question. Not because insurance doesn't matter—it absolutely does. But because insurance is a funding source. It is not a treatment plan. In this episode, I share a pattern I've noticed over and over again in clinic. Some people allow their benefits calendar to determine when they stop investing in their health. Others ask a different question: What does my body actually need to get back to the life I want to live? That shift changes everything. Why insurance coverage shouldn't determine your healing journey. The difference between paying for appointments and investing in your future health. The two paths I've witnessed over 15+ years as a physiotherapist. Why the goal is never more treatment—it's more freedom. How my own marathon injury changed the way I think about investing in recovery. The hidden cost of accepting a smaller life because of pain, fear, or limitations. Why prevention is one of the greatest investments we can make. A simple question that can completely change the way you approach your health. Nobody dreams of spending money on physiotherapy. We dream about what it allows us to do. Running with our kids. Traveling without pain. Picking up our grandchildren. Skiing. Hiking. Sleeping well. Laughing without leaking. Living freely in our bodies. That's what we're investing in. Not appointments. Possibility. So maybe the wrong question isn't: "How many treatments do I have left?" Maybe the better question is: "What kind of life am I trying to live?" Because once you know the answer to that, every decision starts to look a little different. Don't let a benefits calendar become the thing that determines the size of your life. Curious about how to work with Tatianna? Book a consult HERE. Or explore her free resources HERE.

Episode 59: The Simplest Health Hack? Go Outside. The Science of Nature & Health with Dr. Owen Wiseman

What if one of the most powerful things you could do for your health was also one of the simplest? Go outside. In this episode of the Move With Ease Podcast, I'm joined by Dr. Owen Wiseman, naturopathic doctor and a leader in the fields of nature, health, and technology. We explore the fascinating science behind how nature influences our stress response, cardiovascular health, mental wellbeing, movement, and overall quality of life. But this conversation goes beyond simply telling people to "get outside." We ask a much bigger question: What if we designed our communities to make being healthy easier? • Why nature should be considered part of our health infrastructure. • How green space influences both our physical and mental health. • The connection between trees, heat, movement, and healthy communities. • Why access to nature is a public health issue. • Simple ways to bring more nature into your everyday life. One of my favourite takeaways from Owen was this: You don't need to become an "outdoors person." Take your coffee outside. Walk the greener route. Have your next phone call while walking. Spend 10 minutes in a nearby park. Then simply notice how you feel. Sometimes prevention really can be this simple. Episode 58: The Boat Ride: What My 7-Year-Old Taught Me About Listening to Your Body

What if listening to your body isn't something you have to learn... What if it's something you simply have to remember? In this solo episode of the Move With Ease Podcast, I share a simple moment from a family day at the fair that completely shifted my perspective on body awareness. When my seven-year-old decided not to go on a ride because his heart was beating too fast, I realized something profound. Children often know exactly what their bodies are telling them. Somewhere along the way, many of us learn to override those signals. Together, we'll explore how those patterns begin, why they continue into adulthood, and how we can start rebuilding self-trust—both for ourselves and for the next generation. The surprising lesson my seven-year-old taught me at the fair. Why children are naturally connected to their body's signals. How well-meaning adults can unintentionally teach children to override what they're feeling. The difference between encouraging resilience and dismissing what the body is communicating. How these same patterns show up in adulthood—from pain and pelvic floor tension to food choices and burnout. Why listening to your body doesn't mean avoiding discomfort. The role curiosity plays in building self-trust. Simple questions you can ask yourself to reconnect with what your body may be trying to tell you. Later that evening, my son chose to go on a different ride. This time, when I asked him if his heart was beating fast, he smiled and said, "Yeah... but it's in a good way." He wasn't ignoring what his body was telling him. He had learned to pause, notice the sensation, and decide for himself what it meant. That's self-trust. Not never being afraid. Not always pushing. Not always stopping. Simply creating enough space to listen... and then choosing your next step with awareness. Maybe that's the real work. Not teaching ourselves how to listen to our bodies... But remembering that they were worth listening to all along.

Episode 57: When Do We Push, and When Do We Listen? Raising Kids Who Trust Themselves with Gosia

As parents, how do we know when our child needs a little encouragement to keep going... and when they're trying to tell us that something truly isn't right? Today's guest, Gosia, has had to navigate that question many times while raising a high-level young athlete. Her son's journey began in competitive gymnastics and eventually led him into elite diving, with some very big dreams for his future. But what fascinated me most about Gosia's story wasn't his athletic success. It was how she learned to listen. When her son suddenly began crying before gymnastics practice, Gosia initially encouraged him to keep going. But after three days, something felt different. She realized this wasn't simply discomfort he needed to push through. He was telling her something. And listening changed the direction of his life. How to tell the difference between encouraging perseverance and knowing when it's time to listen. Why our own hopes for our children can sometimes make it harder to hear what they're actually telling us. Helping kids develop confidence while still respecting their bodies and their limits. Navigating injuries and learning that rest doesn't always mean doing nothing. Why raising a high-level athlete truly takes a team. Making unconventional decisions when the traditional path no longer fits. And the importance of giving our children a voice in decisions that affect their lives. So many of the women I work with are learning, sometimes for the first time, to ask: What does my body need? Does this actually feel right for me? Is this discomfort I can move through, or is my body asking me to stop? Do I actually want this? Listening to Gosia made me wonder: What if we helped our children develop that inner trust from the beginning? Maybe one of the greatest gifts we can give our kids isn't making every decision for them. It's helping them recognize that their voice, their body, and their inner knowing are worth listening to. Episode 56: The Wasp Test

The Wasp Test: Is It True... or Is Your Brain Filling in the Blanks? It started with a peanut butter and jam English muffin. It was the first day of school, I was packing lunches, my husband was making eggs, and my seven-year-old son was happily eating one of his favourite breakfasts. Suddenly he yelled: "There's a wasp in the house!" He was shaking his head, completely convinced there was a black and yellow wasp buzzing around his face. Except... There was no wasp. There was a giant blob of peanut butter stuck to a strand of his hair, swinging around in front of his eyes. 😂 Once we stopped laughing, I realized we'd just witnessed something our brains do all the time. He wasn't making up his fear. From his perspective, the experience felt completely real. His brain took the information it had, combined it with a previous experience of being stung, and quickly decided: WASP. DANGER. The wasp wasn't real. But his fear absolutely was. And as adults, we do versions of this too. "My back went out before, so I can't move that way." "My knees hurt when I run, so running must be bad for me." "I leak when I jump, so my pelvic floor must be weak." "I'm 45 and everything feels stiff. This must just be aging." Our brains use past experiences, expectations, fears and beliefs to make sense of what's happening now. Sometimes the story is accurate. And sometimes... it's peanut butter. In this solo episode of the Move With Ease Podcast, I'm introducing something I'm calling The Wasp Test: a simple way to pause when fear or an old story takes over and get curious about what's actually happening in the present moment. Ask yourself: What do I actually know to be true right now? What am I assuming? What is my body actually experiencing? Is there another possible explanation? What information could I gather before deciding what this means? This isn't about ignoring pain, fear or what your body is communicating. Pain is information. Fear is information. But our interpretation of that information isn't always fact. Sometimes we need to become still enough to gather new information. Pause. Breathe. Look. Listen. Feel. Get curious. And ask yourself: Is this actually a wasp... or could this be peanut butter? I also love that this funny little breakfast moment gave me an opportunity to teach my seven-year-old something he'll hopefully carry far beyond his fear of wasps. We don't have to dismiss fear. We can acknowledge it, regulate our bodies, gather information and learn to trust ourselves. And maybe that's something we could all practice a little more. Because sometimes there really is a wasp. And sometimes... it's just peanut butter in your hair. 😂 If this episode gave you a smile or made you think of someone who might need their own Wasp Test, send it their way. Until next time, I'm rooting for you to Move With Ease.
