    Episode 28: The Ohtani Standard

    The Los Angeles 2022 Angels and the Florida 2008 Marlins collide in a matchup fourteen years in the making — two ballclubs from wildly different eras, one built around a pair of singular talents, the other built to grind out wins with depth and power up and down the lineup. At the center of it all is Shohei Ohtani, doing something no player in this tournament has attempted: starting games on the mound and deciding them at the plate, sometimes in the same afternoon. Mike Trout supplies the thunder. Florida’s lineup, led by Hanley Ramírez and Josh Willingham, refuses to go quietly.     Episode 27: Whiteyball Meets Its Match

    Two teams, two eras, one collision twenty-one years in the making. The 1982 St. Louis Cardinals arrive as legitimate World Series champions, built by manager Whitey Herzog on a philosophy that had almost nothing to do with the long ball. Speed on the bases, elite defense up the middle, and just enough pitching to make it all hold together — that was “Whiteyball,” and it was enough to win it all. Ozzie Smith turned shortstop into an art form, Willie McGee announced himself as a St. Louis institution in the making, and Bruce Sutter closed the door with one of the nastiest split-finger fastballs the game had ever seen. The 2003 Cleveland Indians tell a completely different story. A club that lost ninety-four games in real life, stripped down to its studs and rebuilding from the ground up — but buried inside that record was a young core that would go on to define the franchise’s future. CC Sabathia, only twenty-two, was already an All-Star. Victor Martinez was just beginning to show the league what his bat could do. Nobody expected much from this Cleveland team. That’s exactly what makes this matchup so dangerous. A champion at the height of its powers against a team that has no idea yet how good it’s about to become.     Episode 26 - A Tale of Two Washingtons

    The nation’s capital has never lacked for baseball history, but it has rarely produced a matchup quite like this one. In this episode, we travel back to nineteen fourteen, where the legendary Walter Johnson, the Big Train himself, anchors a Washington Nationals ballclub built on speed, contact, and one of the most feared arms the game has ever seen. Standing across the diamond, fifty-five years later, is an entirely different Washington team: the nineteen sixty-nine Senators, led by Ted Williams in his first season as manager and powered by the towering bat of Frank Howard, the Capital Punisher. Two franchises, unrelated by lineage but bound together by geography and a shared hunger to win in the same city, collide in a best-of-seven battle for a place in the next round of this all-time knockout tournament. Across four broadcast-style games, we follow every twist as deadball-era baseball meets modern power, tracing the performances of Mike Epstein, Ken McMullen, Eddie Foster, Clyde Milan, and the rest of both rosters, all the way to a series conclusion narrated by our historian. In this episode, the Chicago 1911 Cubs step into the batter’s box against the New York 2023 Mets, a collision between the dead-ball discipline of Frank Chance’s champions-in-waiting and a modern lineup built on raw power and record-setting ambition. Mordecai Brown and his curveball anchor one side of this matchup; Francisco Lindor and a Mets roster loaded with star power anchor the other. This is Field of Dreams, the all-eras knockout tournament where every series is a real competition — winners advance, losers are gone for good, no rematches, no do-overs.     Episode 23 - Screwballs And Florida Domes

    Seventy-five years of baseball history collide in this matchup between the 1938 New York Giants and the 2013 Tampa Bay Rays. The Giants arrive as a golden-age club built around two era-defining talents: Mel Ott, in the prime of one of the great offensive seasons of his career, and Carl Hubbell, the legendary screwball artist known as “King Carl,” still capable of baffling hitters even past his absolute peak. Under manager Bill Terry, this is a lineup with real depth around its two stars, backed by a professional, battle-tested pitching staff. The Rays counter with a completely different identity — a team built on modern analytics, situational hitting, and one of the deepest pitching rotations in this entire tournament. Led by reigning Cy Young winner David Price and anchored by a lineup with no single overwhelming bat but eight professional hitters up and down the order, Tampa Bay represents everything the small-market, data-driven era of baseball stands for. Collective brilliance against individual greatness. Modern defense against a golden-age screwball. Home field belongs to Tampa Bay, but nothing about this series figures to be easy for either side.     Episode 22 — The Centennial

    One hundred series. Five hundred and sixty games. Fifty-one walk-offs, two comebacks from the brink of elimination, one no-hitter that still ended in defeat, and an eighteen-inning marathon that tested the limits of two rosters and everyone watching. The Play-In Round of Field of Dreams has been running since Episode 1, and after one hundred series of all-eras Major League Baseball history colliding in a knockout tournament, it is time to stop and take stock of what has been built. Episode 22 is The Centennial — a special commemorative broadcast covering everything that has happened across the first one hundred series of competition. The New York Yankees lead all franchises with ten wins. The Pittsburgh Pirates have been the most consistent challenger. The Colorado Rockies have been the tournament’s hardest luck story. The 1971 San Diego Padres — a hundred-loss team in real life — pulled off one of the great upsets in tournament history. Eddie Cicotte threw a no-hitter and still went home a loser. Babe Ruth delivered a walk-off in a seven-game classic that stands as the best series the tournament has ever produced. This episode also marks the official launch of the Diamond Ledger — the living record of the greatest individual hitting and pitching performances in Field of Dreams history, updated every hundred series as the competition continues. No new series are narrated in this episode. This one belongs entirely to the first hundred. The tournament resumes in Episode 23, with the next stop at Series 200. Field of Dreams. All eras.     Episode 21 - The Enigma Of Bonds

    Episode 21 of the Field of Dreams Podcast brings us Series 96 — and one of the most compelling matchups this tournament has produced. The 1999 San Francisco Giants, built around the most polarizing player in the history of the game, step into the bracket against the 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates — the We Are Family club, one year removed from their World Series championship, still carrying the glow of one of the most beloved titles in baseball memory. At the center of it all is Barry Bonds. Three MVP awards. A left fielder of uncommon grace. Numbers that defy easy interpretation and a legacy that invites argument the moment his name is spoken.
