The Algorithm Doesn’t Care About Your Title

The Algorithm Doesn’t Care About Your Title: Rethinking Delegation in the Age of AI AI is changing how we work, but it’s also exposing something uncomfortable about how we lead. A lot of leaders think they’re good at delegation. They assign work, set deadlines, and expect results. But AI is revealing the difference between delegating work and outsourcing your lack of clarity. And the algorithm doesn’t care about your title. It doesn’t care how many people report to you, how long you’ve been leading, or how well your team normally interprets what you meant. Give AI vague direction, incomplete context, and unclear expectations, and it will expose those gaps almost immediately. That makes AI more than a productivity tool. It’s becoming a leadership mirror. Consider this: “Can you pull together a summary of last quarter’s numbers by Thursday?” That sounds like delegation. But it’s really task assignment. You transferred the work, but did you transfer the why? Does the person know who will use it? What decision it needs to inform? What good looks like? What they’re empowered to decide without coming back to you? There’s a difference: Task assignment moves something from your to-do list to someone else’s. Delegation transfers ownership. That distinction matters whether you’re working with a direct report, a cross-functional team, or AI. Effective delegation requires three transfers: Don’t just explain what needs to happen. Explain why it matters. What problem are we solving? Who is the audience? What does success look like? What constraints exist? What information should influence the work? Context allows people—and AI—to make better decisions without constantly coming back to you. Ownership without authority isn’t ownership. Be explicit about what decisions someone can make independently. If every decision still requires your approval, you haven’t delegated. You’ve created a longer approval process. Give people room to think, decide, and act. Delegation also means allowing someone to own the outcome. That includes wins, misses, adjustments, and lessons learned. Leaders often sabotage delegation by jumping back in the moment something goes sideways. Sometimes intervention is necessary, but constantly rescuing the work teaches people that ownership ultimately remains with you. This is where AI gets interesting. When you prompt an AI system, you’re forced to confront the quality of your own thinking. What am I actually asking for? What context does it need? What does a strong output look like? What constraints matter? What decisions can it make? When the output misses the mark, our first reaction is often, “AI didn’t understand me.” Maybe. But sometimes we weren’t as clear as we thought we were. Human teams have spent years compensating for this. Experienced employees learn their leader’s preferences. They understand the business. They read between the lines. They ask clarifying questions. They quietly fill in missing context. That can make a leader believe they’re excellent at delegation when their team is actually excellent at translation. AI strips away some of that cushion. The goal isn’t to become better at prompting AI. The bigger opportunity is to become better at communicating intent. Before delegating, ask yourself: Did I transfer context?Did I transfer authority?Did I transfer accountability? If not, you probably transferred a task—not ownership. The leaders who thrive in the AI era won’t simply be the ones with access to the best technology. They’ll be the ones who can clearly articulate what matters, why it matters, what success looks like, and where decision-making authority belongs. AI isn’t replacing leadership. It’s raising the standard for it. And the algorithm doesn’t care what your title says.
