Conflicts of interest do not always involve corruption, dishonesty or deliberate misconduct. They can arise through professional relationships, overlapping responsibilities, personal interests, institutional loyalties, prior involvement, financial interests, organisational pressures or circumstances that create a reasonable question about whether a decision can be made impartially. And that distinction matters. Because the integrity of a decision depends not only upon what was decided, but also upon who made the decision, what interests or relationships existed, whether those circumstances were identified and disclosed, and whether appropriate safeguards were put in place. This episode introduces the SAFECHAIN™ Independence Integrity™ framework and explores the governance “red lines” institutions should recognise before independence becomes compromised.
