The Mandela Effect

Newmag

The Mandela Effect is a history-and-mythbusting podcast concept built around a simple promise: many of the “facts” we feel certain about—famous events, dates, quotes, causes, outcomes—are often remembered incorrectly by large groups of people. The show uses the “Mandela effect” idea (shared, confident misremembering) as a framing device to revisit widely believed narratives and compare them against the historical record.

Stone Dreams: The Splendor and Misery of Armenophobia in Azerbaijan

Yet Azerbaijan presents a disturbing reversal of this warning: after a history marked by violence against Armenians, books that dare to confront that violence have themselves become targets of persecution and destruction. The 11th episode of The Mandela Effect does not seek to portray every Azerbaijani as an Armenophobe. The very existence of acclaimed Azerbaijani writer Akram Aylisli challenges such a sweeping generalization. Instead, the episode examines how anti-Armenian sentiment has been systematically cultivated, institutionalized, and weaponized as an instrument of state policy. Through the remarkable and deeply troubling story of Aylisli and his novel Stone Dreams, we trace the mechanisms through which hostility is promoted by political authorities, amplified by state-aligned media, reinforced through educational institutions, and ultimately normalized in everyday public life. How is the image of the Armenian as an enemy constructed and exploited to legitimize war, manipulate historical memory, and suppress dissent within Azerbaijan itself? How does a political narrative of hatred become so deeply entrenched that even an act of literary empathy is treated as an act of national betrayal? And why did Akram Aylisli—a writer whose perceived transgression was to recognize the humanity of Armenians—become a target of the Aliyev family's authoritarian regime? This episode explores the anatomy of state-sponsored hatred: how prejudice is transformed into ideology, ideology into government policy, and government policy into the collective consciousness of successive generations. At its heart, Stone Dreams is not merely a story about Armenophobia in Azerbaijan. It is an examination of what happens when political power seeks to dictate whom a society must hate—and what it costs an individual to resist.

Berlin–Baghdad”: The Rails of the Armenian Nightmare

Its significance goes far beyond the scale of the project itself. The story of the Baghdad Railway is a powerful reminder that the course of history is shaped not only on battlefields, but also through economic interests, strategic infrastructure, and control over vital lines of communication. According to renowned German historian and journalist Wolfgang Gust, the Baghdad Railway was Germany’s largest overseas investment. It was envisioned as the fastest land route linking Europe to the Persian Gulf and, ultimately, to India—the “jewel” of the British Empire. For Armenians, however—particularly those living in the western regions of the Ottoman Empire—the railway would acquire a far darker meaning. As Gust has written, it became “the fastest route to death.” This episode of “The Mandela Effect” examines how and why the Berlin–Baghdad Railway project was conceived, which powers stood to benefit from it, who sought to obstruct it, and what ultimately became of its construction. Most importantly, it explores the railway’s connection to the fate of the Armenians and the role this ambitious geopolitical project came to play during one of the darkest chapters of Armenian history.

The Malvinas are Argentina's: an unfinished war

արդյո՞ք Ֆոլկլենդյան պատերազմն իսկապես ավարտվել է, թե՞ 2026 թվականի ֆուտբոլի աշխարհի առաջնության դաշտում բացված «Las Malvinas son Argentinas» գրությամբ պաստառը ցույց է տալիս, որ պատերազմը պարզապես շարունակվում է այլ միջոցներով, իսկ Արգենտինայում Ֆոլկլենդյան/Մալվինյան կղզիներն իրենց վզին փաթաթված թոկ չեն համարել, չեն համարում և չեն համարելու: ------------- Behind the phrase "The Malvinas are Argentina's" stands a history of almost two hundred years of territorial dispute and a 74-day war. To understand the essence of the problem, it is first necessary to understand who owned the Falkland/Malvinas Islands until 1833, why did Argentina decide to invade the Malvinas in 1982, how did Margaret Thatcher send the British fleet thousands of kilometers away, what mistakes did the Argentine generals make, and how did this defeat put an end to the ruling regime in Argentina? Finally, it is necessary to clearly diagnose the problem: Is the Falklands War really over, or does the banner "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" displayed at the 2026 World Cup stadium show that the war is simply continuing by other means, and Argentina has not, does not, and will not consider the Falkland/Malvinas Islands a noose around its neck?

Panah Khan: How Turks tried to "settled" in Artsakh

Moreover, any historian with professional conscience and respect will confirm that Artsakh is one of the cradles of the formation of the Armenian people, and when the transition from homosapiens to an ethnic unit took place, the homosapiens of the Karabakh territory became Armenian people with a language, culture, and religious ritual system. In this issue, let's try to understand how, when, under what conditions, thanks to whom, and as a result of whose crime the Turkic-speaking element entered and tried to establish itself in Karabakh.

The most famous traitors in Armenian history

It is also shaped by blood, fracture, and betrayal. In this episode, we enter one of the darkest corridors of Armenian history: the thin line between state treason and national betrayal, the wounds they leave behind, and the way they survive in collective memory. Alongside heroes and martyrs, history also preserves the names we would rather forget — but cannot afford to erase. Because Vardan Mamikonyan teaches us what courage looks like. Vasak Syuni reminds us what betrayal costs. This is an episode about memory, division, loyalty, and the shadow that treason casts across generations.

Enver's defeat at Sarıghamış

It was a historic turning point at which not only the course of the war, but also the fate of the Western Armenians, was decisively shaped. The catastrophic defeat of the Ottoman army at Sarıkamış in the winter of 1914–1915 became a crucial moment that pushed the Young Turk leadership toward committing the first great crime of the twentieth century: the Armenian Genocide. In an effort to conceal Enver Pasha’s failure, a false narrative was deliberately spread, claiming that Armenians were responsible for the Ottoman defeat. That very lie became one of the key instruments used to incite hatred against Armenians and to “justify” the genocide that followed. In this episode, you will discover why the Battle of Sarıkamış became such a fateful turning point, how the fabricated accusations against Armenians took shape, and why the tragedy of April 1915 followed so swiftly after Sarıkamış. From Sarıkamış to the Genocide: one chain, one plan, one catastrophe.

Who Surrendered Ani?

Was Petros Getadardz a traitor, or does history tell us something else? In 1045, the last Armenian kingdom in the Armenian Highlands — the Bagratid Kingdom of Ani — ceased to exist. A full millennium has passed since that day, yet the debate remains unresolved. Who was to blame, who was the patriot, and have we truly understood the real causes behind Ani’s fall? For decades, a widespread belief has held that the Kingdom of Ani collapsed because of a great act of treason, and that the traitor was Catholicos Petros Getadardz. But is that a historical fact, or simply a convenient explanation shaped over the years? Episode 4 of “The Mandela Effect” attempts to untangle one of the most painful knots in Armenian history and understand: how Ani fell, what the real cause was, what is fact and what is myth, and finally, whether we have placed the blame on the right people. If you are interested in one of the greatest and most painful questions in Armenian history, watch until the end.

Heydar Aliyev: Architect of Falsehood

Ժամանակակից Ադրբեջանը հասկանալու համար միայն պատմական անդրադարձը բավարար չէ․ պետք է ճանաչել նաև այն մարդուն, որը ձևավորեց այդ պետությունը, և այն դինաստիային, որը մինչև օրս ղեկավարում է այն։ Այս էպիզոդը բացահայտում է, թե ով էր իրականում Հեյդար Ալիևը, ինչպես նա բարձրացավ խորհրդային համակարգի ամենաբարձր աստիճանները, ինչու կորցրեց իր դիրքերը ԽՍՀՄ վերջին տարիներին, և ինչպես վերադարձավ՝ նախ տիրելով Նախիջևանին, ապա՝ ամբողջ Ադրբեջանին։ Սա քաղաքական վերապրման, իշխանության և այն Ալիևյան դինաստիայի ստեղծման պատմությունն է, որը շարունակում է որոշել Ադրբեջանի դեմքը նաև 21-րդ դարում։ ---------------- To understand modern Azerbaijan, it is not enough to look only at history—we must also understand the man who shaped the state and the dynasty that still rules it today. This episode explores who Heydar Aliyev really was, how he rose to the highest ranks of the Soviet system, why he fell from power in the final years of the USSR, and how he returned to seize first Nakhichevan and then all of Azerbaijan. It is the story of political survival, power, and the creation of the Aliyev dynasty that continues to define Azerbaijan in the 21st century.

Who Was King Pap in Reality?

Over time, Pap’s legacy has been repeatedly reframed and deployed as an ideological instrument. The most recent examples include the Soviet period, when his image was invoked within an anti-church agenda, and the present day, when efforts are underway to reinterpret Pap through contemporary geopolitical and civilizational lenses. This episode on King Pap of the Arsacid dynasty is grounded exclusively in evidence. There are only three primary sources on Pap: the Armenian historians Movses Khorenatsi and Pavstos Buzand, and the Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus. Drawing on these accounts, we examine who Pap truly was, the historical circumstances that shaped his rise, what he sought to accomplish, how his life ended, what he left behind, and—ultimately—the enduring lessons of his reign.

From the Steppe to the Highlands: How Turks Reached Armenia

When the Turks first appeared in the Armenian Highlands in the 11th century, many Armenians perceived them as yet another group of raiders—dangerous, but familiar in pattern. There was a belief that through ransom, tribute, or negotiation, coexistence could be managed and a workable modus vivendi established. A millennium has now passed. Yet even after more than a thousand years of proximity, Armenians have repeatedly struggled to grasp the strategic logic, political culture, and long-term objectives that have shaped Turkic power in the region. For centuries, Armenians have attempted to “find a common language” with successive Turkic polities—only to discover, time and again, that the expected terms of understanding were not shared, and the hoped-for outcomes did not materialize. The core problem has been asymmetry: the goals Armenians have sought—security, reciprocity, stable guarantees—have rarely aligned with what Turkic statecraft has pursued in practice. Moreover, the Turkic arrival and consolidation in the region cannot be reduced to a simple sequence of raids and conquests. It represented a distinctive historical phenomenon: the formation of a new political order rooted in steppe traditions, military mobility, and a nomadic-imperial model that differed in meaningful ways from earlier or later conquerors. In this episode, we will examine who the Turks were in the medieval context, how they entered the Armenian Highlands, how they established a durable “homeland” within a broader Armenian civilizational space, and why the settled societies of the region—Armenians among them—were repeatedly outmaneuvered in the long confrontation often described as the civilizational contest between sedentary states and nomadic empires.

About

The Mandela Effect is a history-and-mythbusting podcast concept built around a simple promise: many of the “facts” we feel certain about—famous events, dates, quotes, causes, outcomes—are often remembered incorrectly by large groups of people. The show uses the “Mandela effect” idea (shared, confident misremembering) as a framing device to revisit widely believed narratives and compare them against the historical record.
