Speaking With Purpose: Leadership, Innovation & the Fight Against Energy Poverty | Simon Doble

Simon grew up on a Somerset farm, left a London trading floor after two weeks, and volunteered across Africa and Bangladesh. A 2011 Time Magazine article on energy poverty arrived at the lowest point of his life. That collision became the spark for SolarBuddy, founded in Brisbane in 2016. His keynote career was never planned: a charity partnership, a phone call, Muscat, Oman. Key Moments His school leaving report read: "Simon is a natural born leader. He just needs to decide which way he's going to lead people." He chose the London trading floor. Two weeks later he walked out, left for Africa and Bangladesh, and never looked back. A 2011 Time Magazine article on energy poverty arrived at the lowest point of his life. He was a father cut off from his children: no tucking them in, no bedside story, no light to turn off. Millions in physical darkness. Him in his own metaphorical kind. That article didn't just spark SolarBuddy. It saved him. Millions of children use kerosene lanterns to study after dark. That smoke kills more people than AIDS and malaria combined: 4.8 million deaths a year. Not from conflict. Not from disease. From trying to learn. Simon was the first person to install a solar floodlight system in a refugee camp, now a global standard. He worked with the UNHCR to get solar lights into UN core relief kits: the previous kit: bucket, tarp, blanket, matches, water tablets, food. Nothing to see by. The children who studied under those lights became the teachers, doctors, and pilots they dreamed of being. His first keynote, Muscat, Oman. Speech on the plane. Backstage, three minutes from walking on, he handed MC Graham five pages he was never going to read from. Graham looked up and said: "The whole world needs to know about this. You've got this. I'll come out on stage with you, stand next to you, and when you feel comfortable I'll step back. When you don't, look for me." Two strangers. They hugged and walked out. Graham is still his stage partner today. In Berlin's Mercedes-Benz Arena, 3,500 people turned off the lights and held up solar lights for children in need. Standing on a rotating stage with light rising around him, he heard himself say on mic: "F*** me. What is happening?" The charity that started on a dining room table had just filled an arena with light. Quotes to Remember "We provided them a tool, just a tool, no silver bullet, no magic ball, just a little tool that they could study longer and better and get the grades. And they've gone on to fulfil their dreams." "The people in the room don't know what you're going to say word for word. So you don't have to know what you're going to say word for word." Simon's Journey Simon Doble is founder and chair of SolarBuddy, now active in 55+ countries and turning ten in May 2026. He has spoken at Davos, Times Square, and to crowds of 63,000 in South Africa. Advice for Speakers Build a spine, not a script. Lock a core message, carry "pockets of stories," and read the room. Nobody knows what you planned to say — going off-script is never the failure you think it is. Olivia founded Ethical Intelligence, now a leading AI education centre, and built her public speaking career on inbound demand. This conversation covers finding your voice in a niche no one had heard of, how TEDx Patras in 2022 changed everything, and why the dinner table might be the most powerful stage of all. Key Moments Olivia's childhood dream of becoming the first female pop star president, and how dance pointed her toward the stage The middle school public speaking class that shaped her craft: strict three-minute limits, no ums, and a comedy speech on cleaning her room that ended up performed school-wide Discovering AI ethics at around 22 or 23 through another woman's talk, then founding Ethical Intelligence after her MSc at Edinburgh The COVID pandemic becoming an unlikely speaking bootcamp, with back-to-back online talks as one of few female voices in AI ethics Quoting her first speaking fee of $3,000, flying Edinburgh to Florida, then sitting in disbelief when the client replied "sounds good" in half an hour Her executive dinner format: a keynote across three to five courses for 20 to 25 people, designed to lower guards and surface insights participants don't realise they gave Quotes to Remember "My best talks have always come when the audience is engaged. I can feel that energy coming off of them, and I'm able to pull them into my world and my thinking." "Those nerves, those butterflies, they're excited. They're dancing with you." (Her mother's words, passed down before every performance) Olivia's Journey Raised in Silicon Valley, Olivia studied philosophy at Baylor, then Brussels as a GDPR researcher before Edinburgh for her MSc in AI Ethics. At around 22 or 23, one talk sparked the idea behind Ethical Intelligence. Her career grew through the pandemic, her first paid fee of $3,000 from Edinburgh, and TEDxPatras in 2022 as the turning point. Her book Responsible AI followed, with a second in progress. Advice for Speakers Olivia speaks in blocks rather than scripts, staying free to read the room. She crafts theatrical hooks built for shock, including opening an AI ethics keynote by announcing she is there to teach the audience to make money with AI. Her executive dinner format proves the right environment lowers barriers no conventional stage can touch, generating insights from conversations people didn't realise they were having. One Courageous Voice. $25 Million Raised. Thousands of Lives Protected. Episode Description Carmen Sederino sits down with Jessica Muñoz, nurse practitioner, philanthropist, motivational speaker, and founder of Ho'ōla Nā Pua, the Hawaii nonprofit dedicated to ending child sex trafficking. After witnessing trafficked children arrive in her Honolulu emergency room labelled as delinquents rather than victims, she built Pearl Haven, a 13-acre residential treatment campus on O'ahu serving girls aged 11 to 18 for nine to 18 months each. Jessica shares what it took to raise over $25 million in 15 years without a fundraising background, what she learned about public speaking and executive presence on a 2,500-person TEDx stage, and how she balances emotional storytelling with hope so audiences act rather than shut down. Key Moments Noticing trafficked children, some as young as 11, being arrested for prostitution in the ER and deciding to ask the questions no one else was asking Securing a 30-year, $480-a-year government land lease on a $19 million property through unanimous board support A 14-year-old girl in her Pearl Haven intake interview saying, "I just need someone to give me a chance" A casual lunch that turned into a multi-million dollar donation, and what it taught her about always showing up prepared A young woman who recalled a school assembly years later, saying Jessica's words helped her identify and report a pimp who had targeted her The Hawaii Five-O Season 7 episode on child sex trafficking that drew 9.4 million views on its first night, the show's most-watched episode Quotes to Remember "I believe I have a justice gene in my DNA and it's driven me to make right what's been wrong." "When you have a powerful message to share, it gives you courage and bravery that you never thought was possible." Jessica's Journey Raised in Lake Tahoe, California, Jessica trained as a nurse practitioner and moved to Hawaii, where ER shifts exposed trafficked youth being treated as criminals. She founded Ho'ōla Nā Pua in 2008 at age 26, starting with volunteers, cold-calling legislators and judges, and securing the Pearl Haven land lease against all odds. Over 15 years she raised over $25 million through speaking engagements, built a program running on a $9 million annual budget, and is now focused on national expansion. Advice for Speakers Jessica tailors her opening story to every room, finding the relatable angle for that specific audience before stepping on stage. She often abandons her outline once she gets there, trusting instinct alongside preparation. Her core lesson: balance emotional storytelling with hope. Push audiences too far into the darkness and they disengage rather than act. Steve Foran: From Engineer to Gratitude CEO, Building a Business on What the World Was Ignoring

Connect with Carmen Sederino Website: illuminatedstory.com LinkedIn: Carmen Sederino YouTube: Illuminated Story Instagram: @illuminatedstory Free Masterclass: Beyond the Keynote Masterclass Connect with Steve Foran Website: gratitudeatwork.ca LinkedIn: Steve Foran Book: Surviving to Thriving: The 10 Laws of Grateful Leadership Steve Foran: From Engineer to Gratitude CEO, Building a Business on What the World Was Ignoring Episode Description Carmen Sederino sits down with Steve Foran, CSP, CEO of Gratitude at Work and author of Surviving to Thriving: The 10 Laws of Grateful Leadership. A lifelong Halifax resident, Steve spent 13 years as an electrical engineer before founding a gratitude-focused speaking business in 2006, when the topic drew far more raised eyebrows than corporate budgets. Steve shares the science behind grateful leadership, why our brains are wired toward a "surviving" mindset, and how a deliberate gratitude practice shifts individual wellbeing and team culture. He gets candid about building a speaking career from a $700 first fee to $10,000 keynotes, and the theatrical craft that makes a message land. Key Moments Steve got an F for refusing to stand up and teach in Grade 11 history class. The same person now speaks to thousands for $10,000 a keynote. His first client was a church, one month after launching in November 2006. His first $700 fee came from a construction company where the pizza for 50 staff cost more than he charged.  Steve explains the "unrelenting force": our brains are wired to pull us toward survival mode, and gratitude is the intentional counter-practice. Grateful people sleep better, exercise more, live longer, and are less likely to gossip or ostracise colleagues. Steve shares the science, then says don't wait for research to be complete before acting. His fee progression: $700, $1,000, $2,500, $4,000, six years at that level, then $6,000, $7,500, and $10,000 this year. Carmen and Steve swap notes on theatrical craft: miming a trolley across stage, voicing his mother mid-story, and why slowing to one word at a time is its own form of theatre. Quotes to Remember "The practice of gratitude is not going to eliminate the hyper-focus on the negative. But by introducing being very intentional with a gratitude practice, you push it down and go, okay, there's crap out there, but look at all the good in the world." "Speaking and the mastery of speaking is a journey. It's not a destination. It's a place where it's always good to have a community of people that are able to support you." Steve's Journey Steve Foran grew up the oldest of five in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He studied electrical engineering, spent 13 years at a provincial power utility, then moved into business development at a post-secondary college. During his MBA he researched the link between gratitude and generosity, and that became the foundation. He launched Gratitude at Work in November 2006, built his public speaking career through corporate clients, and has grown into a recognised keynote speaker and author on grateful leadership. Advice for Speakers Build a community around your growth as a public speaker. Keynote speaking mastery has no finish line, and the right people alongside you accelerate what experience alone takes years to teach. Start a gratitude practice as the foundation for resilience. Open your keynote in the story: no good mornings, no thank-yous, just the scene. How to Ride the Tsunami of Change Platform: Futurwise Dr. Mark van Rijmenam: From Hotel Kitchens to the World Stage, Architecting Tomorrow Episode Description Carmen Sederino sits down with Dr. Mark van Rijmenam, the world's number one ranked strategic futurist, global keynote speaker, and six-time author. Known as The Digital Speaker and Architect of Tomorrow, Mark's path is anything but linear: a decade in hospitality, a 14,000-kilometre bicycle ride for charity, a consulting role he engineered himself out of, and a blog started on a Sunday that became a book deal in three months. Today he speaks across 32-plus countries on responsible AI, exponential change, and designing a better future. Key Moments Mark bombed his first university speech with a hangover, then redeemed himself with a graduation address to 1,000 people Cycling 14,000 km around Australia in 100 days raised $40,000 for the Dutch Children's Cancer Fund, ending his appetite for corporate work His first paid keynote was 500 euros at a Christmas event in the Netherlands, six weeks after launching a big data blog Opening TEDx Athens in 2023 with his AI digital twin on a fake Zoom call before walking on stage to 1,500 people Why only around 10,000 people globally understand where technology is heading, and why that gap threatens everyone else Futurwise: Gartner-quality research at Spotify pricing in 25 languages, built for 6.5 billion people underserved by the English-dominated internet Quotes to Remember "You're only as good as your last keynote." "We have sleepwalked into this digital world. We know how our phone works, but we all used these free services because they were so addictive from the start, and now we're completely hooked." Mark's Journey Mark van Rijmenam grew up in the Netherlands, moving five times for his father's public service career. After a decade in hospitality across the Middle East and Caribbean, he moved into corporate finance, hated it, cycled the Australian continent in 100 days for charity, and got himself fired from consulting. A blog launched on a Sunday led to a paid keynote within six weeks and a book deal within three months. Someone called him a futurist and it stuck. He holds a PhD in Management from UTS and founded Futurwise. Advice for Speakers Prepare thoroughly, never drink the night before, and honour the fact the audience is hearing your talk for the first time. Mark stresses the weight of the stage: 45 minutes with senior leaders is a genuine chance to shift how they think. He collects written feedback using a form offered in exchange for a free summary, and has accumulated over 1,000 five-star audience responses. Debbie grew up in the Kabbalah Centre from age five, lived in communes across three countries, had her passport confiscated, and escaped at 19. What followed was a journey from shy introvert to global keynote speaker, twice-awarded university teacher, and author of Make it Meaningful, published by Simon & Schuster. Key Moments Childhood cult rituals, rolling in snow naked to "purify sins," and why she still loved the sense of belonging despite the abuse The turning point in Paris: 14 people in one apartment, passports confiscated, watching newly married women cry on the floor like her mother once had Putting on jeans for the first time and feeling like she was "walking around naked" after a lifetime of enforced modest dress The tutoring programme that waived half her university fees and revealed her life purpose, leading her to manage 1,000 volunteers at 24 Her pre-stage ritual: one minute imagining the unknown person in the audience whose life her talk might change Dreaming up her ideal keynote show with Carmen: open-air stage, live piano, bookcase of formative reads, and lighting projecting her two-metres-tall shadow Quotes to Remember "If at 19 I went to a fortune teller and she said one day you'll be a public speaker working on global stages, I would have asked for a refund." "When I'm on stage and I see their eyes shining and I see this sparkle, there is not a lot of things in life that I love more." Debbie's Journey Born in Tel Aviv, Debbie joined the Kabbalah Centre at five after her brother's death sent her mother searching for meaning. She escaped a Paris commune at 19 and spent six months journalling her way to new values. A university tutoring programme became her turning point; she completed a PhD on volunteering and became Professor of Management at Macquarie Business School, twice winning the Vice Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence. Advice for Speakers Practise on small groups and keep going. Debbie rehearsed her TEDx script in the shower and car until her four daughters knew it by heart. With a doctorate in mechanical and aerospace engineering and 12+ years as a senior scientist at Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne, Dr Anushi turned a childhood needle phobia into world-changing innovation. From painfully shy child to keynote speaker, she discusses the unconventional path from academia to entrepreneurship, designing medical devices with children's comfort in mind, and the moment her son became her most valuable product tester. Key Moments Growing up in rural Sri Lanka with a photographic memory that inspired a lifelong love of science and led to a smooth academic career The moment her sister was born at age three and transformed her from a shell-bound child into someone willing to take the stage Dancing into public presence and discovering how that translated into keynote speaking decades later Her doctorate in mechanical and aerospace engineering leading her into vaccine development and advanced biological therapies The needle phobia she's had since childhood becoming the spark for Misti's breakthrough technology Her son's honest feedback on prototype masks, telling her they were too heavy or too ugly, and eventually approving the final design Quotes to Remember "Don't wait. You know, if you ever have an idea, just give it a go because the worst is that you look back and think to yourself, I've actually had a go and that's a really good thing to be proud of, even if it fails. But the worst outcome is you haven't had a go. So give it a go. Don't wait. Don't wait for permission. Just lead." "That's the full circle moment that I went, you're the reason why I started this and now you're part of this. He's my inspiration." Anushi's Journey Born in rural Sri Lanka near Colombo, Anushi attended a competitive girls school that shaped her discipline. Inspired by Marie Curie and blessed with a photographic memory, she excelled through her BSc/BEng in biomedical engineering and PhD in mechanical and aerospace engineering. She spent 12 years as a senior scientist at Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne and worked as a regulatory officer at GSK before founding Misti to bring her needle-free drug delivery vision to life. Advice for Speakers Dr Anushi's speaking journey began in dance school at age three and evolved through transforming fear into action. Your origin story is your power: the contrast between who you were and who you've become captivates audiences. She separates the scientist from the storyteller, bringing prototypes, inviting collaborators on stage, and making her mission tangible. While others default to graphs and data, she chooses narrative and props, making herself unforgettable. Franziska is the founder of Basic Bananas, a four-time bestselling author, a board member at Entrepreneurs Organization, and a keynote speaker who rides motorbikes from Switzerland to Kazakhstan when she isn't on stage. The conversation covers her accidental path to speaking, the neuroscience of courage, charging properly for keynotes, and why authenticity beats performance. They also trade ideas on experiential events in an AI-saturated world. Key Moments Her first paid keynote in Perth that left her breaking even after flights from Sydney. The Florida accounting conference she quoted $25K USD for and the surprising reply. Riding the highest road in the Himalayas, and the Switzerland to Kazakhstan trip along Marco Polo's Silk Road that sparked The Courage Map. Reading kids' books in exaggerated voices to train her own stage delivery. The neuroscience of the amygdala, surfing nerves, and how every wave she paddles out for expands her capacity for courage. Her favourite gig of last year: a Charlotte motorcycle museum booked by EO with a DJ spinning between vintage bikes. Quotes to Remember  "The more we activate the amygdala in ways that aren't reckless, the more our capacity for courage increases." "I want to know what's in you, in your human mind, how you think. If a talk has been written by AI, I don't read past the first paragraph." Franziska's Journey  Raised in a Swiss village of 600, Franziska left at 16 for an exchange in Costa Rica, worked at the Swiss Embassy in South Africa, then won a Geneva scholarship that brought her to Sydney 20 years ago. After advertising, she founded Basic Bananas in 2009, growing it across the US, New Zealand and Canada. She has written four bestselling books, including The Courage Map (foreword by Sir Richard Branson), and now lives near Byron Bay with her partner and two daughters. Advice for Speakers  Stop performing and start showing up. Authenticity is what people connect with, not polish. Pick up the phone instead of hiding behind email. Say yes to gigs even when the fee is below your rate, because the hours on stage compound. Suggest experiential touches to event organisers: a dingy bar, a motorbike entrance, a museum. On AI: use it to research, never to write your thinking for you, because audiences smell it from a mile away.
