We need to talk about Lumumba: Congo, Colonialism, and the Cold War

When I visited a Christmas market in Germany last week, I noticed something that stopped me in my tracks:A hot chocolate with rum still being sold under the name “Lumumba.”Many people ordering it had no idea who Patrice Lumumba was — or why using his name for an alcoholic drink is deeply disrespectful. This episode is an attempt to change that. Patrice Lumumba was the first democratically elected Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.A powerful activist, a pan-Africanist, and a fierce anti-colonial leader, he embodied the hope of a newly independent nation — and paid for it with his life. In this episode, we trace Lumumba’s life and political vision, the violent colonial history of the Congo, the Cold War forces that shaped his downfall, and the long shadow his assassination cast over the country. We also ask what remembrance, accountability, and reparations might look like today — and why it matters how we speak his name. This is not just a story about the past.It is about memory, dignity, and why Patrice Lumumba should be remembered as the extraordinary man he was — not reduced to a drink on a menu. CONTENT NOTE: This episode discusses colonial violence, political assassination, racism, and mass death. There are references to physical violence and the destruction of a human body.Listener discretion is advised.
