    Join us this week for our 8th episode at Conversations at the Center! This week, our host and Director, Edouard Machery talks with 3 of our PSP8 students, Arina Zhu, Jacinta Creel, and Maddox Larson as we wrapped up our 2024 Pittsburgh Summer Program. Our Pittsburgh Summer Program is for undergraduate Students who are highly motivated and show strong academic promise and interest in the philosophy of science.   The program is open to all qualified undergraduate applications. This episode, Edouard talks with returning guest, John Norton, distinguished professor at the University of Pittsburgh History and Philosophy of Science department. We continue to discuss John's research, relativity, quantum theory, and statistical physics, with a special interest in general relativity, his publications focus on the detailed steps of Einstein's discovery of general and special relativity and many aspects of the theory's philosophical foundations. Alison McConwell is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at UMass Lowell. She holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Calgary. Prior to her position at UMass Lowell, she held postdoctoral appointments at the University of British Columbia and Standford University. Her research focuses on the history and philosophy of biology, and epistemology of science. She has interest in values, pragmatism, and feminist though related to those areas, and conducts archival work concerning the intellectual history of evolutionary biology. Jacob Stegenga is a Professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge. He has published widely in general philosophy of science and philosophy of medicine and biology. Prior to joining Cambridge he taught in the United States and Canada, and he received his PhD from the University of California San Diego. He is the author of Medical Nihilism and Care and Cure: An Introduction to Philosophy of Medicine, and he is currently writing a book tentatively titled Heart of Science. Revitalizing Science and Values, 4.5.2024- 4.7.2024 The arena of science and values has grown in size and prominence in recent philosophy of science. But debates about the role of science remain fairly limited in terms of both the scope of topics discussed and in the range of views expressed. This conference aims to broaden the horizons of work on science and values, partly by making room for new (or new versions of older) ideas and partly by getting it to interact with other parts of philosophy.
