Two French Wines You're Sleeping On (Plus a Wine Club Announcement)

This week on Poppin' Bottles, we're going deep on French wine. All French, all episode. We kicked things off with rosé, and specifically the stuff people get wrong about it. If you've ever written off rosé as sweet, or assumed it's all the same, this one's for you. We got into what actually makes a rosé dry vs. sweet, why French rosé hits different, and what to look for when you're standing in front of a wall of pink bottles with no idea what to grab. Then we took a trip to Bordeaux and talked Merlot. Not the Merlot you're picturing. We got into what's actually happening in Bordeaux right now, how oxygen plays a role in what you taste, and why the sustainable farming practices in the region matter more than most people realize. And we wrapped things up with a wine club update. The next release is coming, and it's all French. We talked about what's in it, how we curate the selections, and why joining the club is the easiest way to drink better wine without having to think too hard about it. Both wines from the episode are on the shelf at The Fox + Bottle. Come try them. 🕐 Timestamps: 0:00 - Exploring French Rosé 15:23 - Journey to Bordeaux 33:12 - Wine Club and Upcoming Release 🍷 Featured Topics: French Rosé: dry vs. sweet, misconceptions, what to look forBordeaux Merlot: oxygen, sustainable farming, old world styleWine Club: next release preview, all-French curation 📍 Visit us: The Fox + Bottle, 112 5th Ave S, Edmonds, WA 🎧 Listen on Apple Podcasts & Spotify #PoppinBottles #FrenchRosé #Bordeaux #Merlot #FrenchWine #WineClub #RoséSeason #EdmondsWA #FoxAndBottle #WineTasting #WineEducation #DrinkBetter

Spring Wines Your Mom (and Everyone Else) Will Love

Spring is here (kind of... it's 42 and drizzling in Edmonds) and we're leaning all the way into it. This episode is about two French wines that belong in your hands the second the sun comes out. First up: a Pét-nat from Domaine Lingo Martine. 100% Gamay from the Savoie region, just off the boat from France. If you're not familiar with Pét-nats, this is the OG of sparkling wine. No second fermentation, no dosage, just a bottle that got capped before it was done doing its thing. This one smells like strawberry shortcake and drinks like something you'd bring to literally any gathering and immediately become the most popular person there. Then we shifted to a soft, easy-drinking red from southwest France. At around $22, it's one of those bottles that sits in a sweet spot: not as light as a Pinot, not as heavy as a full-bodied Cab, just right in that accessible middle ground. We got into one of our favorite concepts on this one: the difference between "thinker" wines and "drinker" wines. Both are great. But knowing which one you're reaching for and why is a big part of how we think about wine at the shop. We also talked about some fun stuff coming up at The Fox + Bottle, including a Lobo Hills tasting on April 16th during wine walk, art from Tracey Fox, and a Mother's Day tasting with Katie from Grape Expectations the following week. Both wines are on the shelf. Come grab them. 🕐 Timestamps: 0:00 - Intro 0:30 - What is Pet Nat? Why Cab Franc Deserves a Spot in Your Glass | Old World vs. Washington

This week on Poppin' Bottles, Brandon takes us back to where it all started for him: a glass of Cab Franc from Chinon in France's Loire Valley. That was the wine that made him realize there's more to wine than just "red wine that tastes good." We're tasting a beautiful bottle from Angelique Leon, a one-woman operation making clean, organic, low-intervention wines in the Loire, and then bringing it back home to Washington with a 100% Cab Franc from Entiat wine out of Lake Chelan. Same grape, totally different expressions. The French bottle is bright, silky, and herbaceous. The Washington bottle brings more weight, dried fruit, and a long savory finish. We talk about why Cab Franc deserves way more attention than it gets, how to retrain your brain when tasting across styles, and why putting two bottles of the same varietal side by side is one of the best things you can do for your palate. Both wines are available on the shelf at The Fox + Bottle in downtown Edmonds. Come grab them and try the comparison yourself. 🕐 Timestamps: 0:00 - Intro 0:30 - The wine that got Brandon into wine 2:30 - Tasting Angelique Leon's Loire Valley Cab Franc 3:24 - Drops of God shoutout (watch it!) 4:30 - Old world winemaking and low intervention 5:56 - Why French wine can feel different at first 6:27 - Retrain your brain: appreciate what's in the glass 7:48 - Cab Franc as a blending grape vs. on its own 9:16 - Segment 2: Entiat Wine Cab Franc from Lake Chelan 12:30 - Tasting the Washington Cab Franc 14:40 - Why you should taste these side by side at home 17:00 - Food pairings: charcuterie to steak night 18:35 - Where to find these bottles 20:00 - Spring apparel at the shop 21:00 - Next episode teaser: Rosé season is here 🍷 Wines Featured: Angelique Leon's Chinon Cab Franc (Loire Valley, France)Entiat 2022 Cabernet Franc (Lake Chelan, WA)📍 Visit us: The Fox + Bottle, 112 5th Ave S, Edmonds, WA 🎧 Listen on Apple Podcasts & Spotify #PoppinBottles #CabFranc #WashingtonWine #FrenchWine #LoireValley #LakeChelan #EdmondsWA #FoxAndBottle #WineTasting #WineEducation #DrinkLocal #OldWorldWine
