Hello, welcome et bienvenue to ON AIR, the podcast series of the UniGR-Center for Border Studies! The UniGR-CBS is an Interdisciplinary Center of Expertise of the University of the Greater Region (UniGR) and combines the expertise of the border researchers of its partner universities.     In this episode, Lola Aubry and Anne-Laure Amilhat Szary from the University of Grenoble-Alpes explore new ways of thinking about borders – beyond the human. Drawing on the UniGR-CBS Border Realities Lecture Series (2024-25), the discussion explores how ecological crises, the Anthropocene and posthumanist theories are reshaping our perception of borders.     In dieser Folge spricht Johanna Trager (Karls-Universität Prag) über das grenzüberschreitende Pendeln von tschechischen Arbeitnehmer:innen nach Deutschland. Die Doktorandin erforscht das Grenzpendeln nach Bayern – ein Phänomen, das 1989 einsetzte und seitdem kontinuierlich wächst.     ON AIR – Grenzkomplexitäten

    In dieser Episode sprechen Dominik Gerst (Universität Duisburg-Essen) und Christian Wille (Universität Luxemburg) darüber, inwiefern Grenzen viel mehr sind als starre Linien auf einer Landkarte. Ausgehend vom aktuellen Trend, Grenzen als ‘komplex’ zu beschreiben, fragen die beiden: Was bedeutet das eigentlich genau? Und was unterscheidet eine sogenannte komplexe Grenze von einer bloß komplizierten? Dabei geht es um Diskontinuität, Emergenz und um die Rolle verschiedener Akteure: von Menschen über Institutionen bis hin zu Technologien. Im Gespräch wird deutlich, dass Grenzen nicht feststehen, sondern immer wieder neu hergestellt und erlebt werden. Die kulturwissenschaftlichen Grenzforscher diskutieren, wie man solche Prozesse untersuchen kann, ohne sie aber zu vereinfachen.     ON AIR – Tabletop Role-Playing Games as Border Studies

    In this episode, Tobias Schank (Saarland University) speaks with Joon-Ho/Ryan Ahn Roden, a PhD candidate at the University of Hawaiʻi Mānoa and former visiting scholar at Saarland University in January 2026. Joon-Ho specializes in Indigenous politics, alternative futures, Critical Ocean Studies, and Border Studies, and brings all four into a tabletop role-playing game of his own design. Together, Tobias and Joon-Ho reflect on the immersive game sessions conducted with students at Saarland University, in which participants played a collective entity navigating the collapse of human civilization, a crumbling border wall, and the question of what it means to exist in a world defined by foreignness. They discuss play as a method of knowing, storytelling as resistance, and the next step: presenting their results at the Annual Conference of the Association for Borderlands Studies in the roundtable session “Playing the Frontier: Tabletop Role-Playing Games as Border Studies”.
