Alick Mac on Vulnerability, Songwriting and Boys’ Club

Alick Mac is a rapper, singer and songwriter from the Comox Valley. In this episode of Inlet Wire, Alick talks about his earliest connection to music, discovering hip-hop, and how writing became a place where he could be honest and vulnerable. He gets into his creative process, working with different beat makers and collaborators, and how a song can take shape in different ways. We also hear about “Toothpaste,” a track that brings together his rapping and singing. The conversation then turns to “Easier to Shout,” and the bigger questions around masculinity, emotional honesty and mental health that eventually grew into Boys’ Club — Alick’s one-man show combining original music, personal stories and reflections on masculinity, mental health and misogyny. Local Charm: The Move, the Reunion, the Record

Jesse Hubner from Victoria band Local Charm joins Inlet Wire to talk about the move to the coast that changed his songwriting — and the friendship that unexpectedly found its way back into the music. Jesse and guitarist Shane first wrote together more than a decade ago before their lives went in different directions. Years later, Jesse’s move to Victoria brought them back together, with two of those early songs eventually finding a home on Local Charm’s self-titled album. Jesse talks about why the songs started flowing after the move, how the record came together quickly once the band formed, recording ten vocal tracks back-to-back, and why “Get It Got It” became the song that means the most to him. Quadra Sound: Building a World Around the Band

I first came across Quadra Sound through a clip of the band covering one of my favourite Alice in Chains songs—and honestly, it sounded so good that I wanted to dig deeper. Quadra Sound are a four-piece rock band from Vancouver Island, but they are building more than just a collection of songs. Through social media, playful videos, and their own podcast, they are creating a whole world around the band and finding direct ways to connect with listeners. In this episode, I speak with Nick Fascione about the role social media plays for an independent band, the unexpected video that reached more than a million views, and why sharing more of himself online has encouraged him to be vulnerable. We also get into the band’s years of development, working with producer and songwriter Brian Howes, and the freedom that comes with starting again and reshaping your identity. The conversation eventually brings us back to Campbell River and a deeply personal song about growing up in a small town, wanting to experience more of the world, and remembering where you came from. King Bob - Making Music That Is About Something

King Bob began taking shape around 2018, but the songs behind the project go back much further. In this episode of Inlet Wire, I’m joined by Jackson McDonald from the Victoria band King Bob. Jackson talks about learning to record at home, bringing years of unfinished ideas together for the 17-song debut album Rookie, and how one of the band’s oldest songs became “Figure It Out.” We also talk about King Bob’s Patreon, where Jackson shares demos, weekly covers and other work that happens between official releases.
