Joyful Sacrifice, Origin Story Part 3

One of the earliest lessons in real estate investing is that discipline matters. The harder lesson is discovering what discipline actually looks like in practice. This chapter of Nick and Dr. Elaine Stageberg’s origin story takes place during what they later came to call a season of joyful sacrifice. Not suffering for its own sake, but choosing a demanding season because the opportunity in front of them was real. At the time, they were raising two young kids while balancing careers and a growing number of real estate projects. Still, they kept pushing. They wrote one offer on a property every day. Renovations moved quickly. Investor capital had to be raised and returned. The pace rarely slowed. Over time, the volume of work sharpened their instincts. They learned to move quickly, recognize opportunity in imperfect properties, and make decisions under pressure. Those years were exhausting. They were also the years when the portfolio began to accelerate. More importantly, they developed the judgment that only comes from real experience. The habits built during that season would shape the way they approach real estate to this day. Starting the Snowball, Origin Story Part 2

Every real estate investor eventually learns that the business is not as clean as it looks on paper. The early deals are rarely perfect, and most of the lessons come from figuring things out along the way. The second chapter of Nick and Dr. Elaine Stageberg’s origin story takes place during those apprenticeship years. Elaine was still in residency, they had one child and another on the way, Nick was working a full time job, and had just gotten his real estate license. The deals themselves were often unusual. Nick and Elaine were faced with houses in deep distress, limited information, and decisions that had to be made faster than felt comfortable. Those experiences began to shape how they thought about investing. They learned how to move quickly when an opportunity appeared, how to see value in properties other buyers overlooked, and how to make sound decisions even when the information was incomplete. The goal was simple: get the snowball rolling. Each deal was a chance to build momentum, stack experience, and grow the portfolio over time.
