The Hydra: Hercules and the Monster That Grew Stronger When Cut

At the marshes of Lerna, Heracles, the Greek hero better known by his Roman name Hercules, meets a monster that turns every successful blow against him. The Lernaean Hydra is a many-headed water-serpent, deadly in breath, blood, or venom, and in the best-known tradition its severed heads grow back unless the wound is stopped by fire. This episode follows the second labor of Heracles, ordered by King Eurystheus, and shows why strength alone cannot win the fight. The story is told from Greek tradition while keeping its variations clear. Hesiod names the Hydra among the monstrous offspring linked with Typhon and Echidna and connects it to Hera’s hostility toward Heracles. Pseudo-Apollodorus gives a fuller surviving account with Iolaus, cauterization, the immortal head, and the poisoned arrows. Ancient art, local traditions around Lerna, and later Roman retellings all preserve different details, including different numbers of heads. The Hydra survives because it became a symbol for problems that multiply when attacked in the wrong way. The myth also raises a dispute about heroism: if Heracles wins only with Iolaus’s help, does that diminish the labor, or reveal what the labor was truly testing?
