Emotional Regulation in a Dysregulated World

“If you feel anxious all the time… it might not be you. It might be the world your nervous system is trying to survive in.” In this episode of Psychology & the Soul™, we explore what it means to live in a world that never turns off — and how constant information, pressure, and uncertainty are impacting your nervous system in real time. You’re not broken. You’re responding. We are living in a time of global dysregulation — where anxiety, overwhelm, burnout, and emotional shutdown are becoming the norm. But what many people don’t realize is that these are not personality flaws… they are nervous system responses. Hosted by Kellee White, LMFT, and Dr. Shirley Impellizzeri, PhD, this episode breaks down: ✨ What emotional regulation actually is ✨ How the nervous system responds to stress (fight, flight, freeze) ✨ Why anxiety is increasing in today’s world ✨ The impact of fear-based media and constant stimulation ✨ How to tell what you’re feeling is yours — and what isn’t ✨ Science-backed tools to regulate your nervous system ✨ Mindfulness practices grounded in psychology and awareness You’ll also learn simple, practical techniques you can use immediately to come back to center — including breathwork, grounding, emotional labeling, and awareness-based practices. This episode is not about fixing yourself. It’s about understanding what your body is trying to tell you. So if you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or shut down… Pause. Take a breath. And ask yourself: “Is this mine… or am I carrying more than I need to?” #PsychologyAndTheSoul #EmotionalRegulation #AnxietyRelief #MentalHealthAwareness #NervousSystem #Mindfulness #TraumaInformed #ConsciousAwareness #HealingJourney #Podcast

Grief, Loss & the Search for Meaning

Grief is one of the most universal human experiences — and one of the most misunderstood. In this episode of Psychology & the Soul, Dr. Shirley Impellizzeri and Kellee White explore Grief, Loss & Meaning-Making through both psychological science and spiritual insight. Rather than rushing grief toward positivity or quick explanations, this conversation honors grief as a natural and necessary human process. Together, they discuss the psychology and neuroscience of grief, why the well-known “stages of grief” are often misunderstood, and how the nervous system processes loss. They also explore the deeper existential questions that grief can bring — including identity, meaning, and continued connection. Topics in this episode include: • What grief actually is and how it affects the nervous system • The neuroscience of grief and why loss can feel like physical pain • Complicated grief and trauma-infused loss • Spiritual meaning-making after loss • Common phrases that unintentionally invalidate grief • Practical psychological and spiritual tools for integrating loss This is a grounded, compassionate discussion about grief that does not rush the process or bypass the pain — but instead explores how healing and meaning gradually unfold over time. Join us live for this thoughtful conversation and feel free to share your questions and reflections in the comments during the broadcast. Psychology & the Soul brings together psychology and spirituality in conversation — exploring trauma, healing, relationships, personal growth, and the deeper questions of being human. #SpiritualHealing #GriefHealing  #PsychologyAndTheSoul #RelationshipHealing #EmotionalHealth #NervousSystemHealing #ConsciousRelationships #kelleewhite #drshirley

    Spiritual Bypassing vs Authentic Healing

Spirituality is meant to expand awareness. But sometimes, it becomes a way to avoid discomfort and become a shield. We live in a culture where positivity is marketed as strength and “high vibration” is equated with worthiness, many people feel pressure to rise above their pain before they’ve actually processed it. They often confuse positivity with healing. “Just stay aligned.” “Everything happens for a reason.” “Don’t give your energy to that.” Sometimes those phrases are supportive. Sometimes they are avoidance. This is not about rejecting spirituality. It is about grounding it. Psychologically, avoidance is a natural defense mechanism. It reduces immediate distress for the short term. But long term, it prevents integration. When spiritual language is used to suppress emotional processing, it becomes what we call spiritual bypassing. Healing does not happen by skipping steps. It happens by embodying them. This conversation is not anti-spiritual. It is pro-integration. In Episode 2 of Psychology & the Soul, Dr. Shirley Impellizzeri and Kellee White explore the difference between spiritual bypassing and authentic healing. We discuss: Toxic positivity“Everything happens for a reason” cultureDissociation disguised as enlightenmentEmotional suppression in spiritual spacesEmbodied spiritualityScience-informed healingThis episode examines how real growth requires emotional processing, nervous system safety, and grounded awareness — not spiritual escape. Psychology & the Soul bridges clinical science and spiritual insight — without bypassing, labels, or extremes. Trauma & the Nervous System — What Happens Inside Us

What is trauma — really? In this foundational episode of Psychology & the Soul™, Kellee White and Dr. Shirley Impellizzeri explore what actually happens inside the nervous system when we experience trauma — and why so many people feel overwhelmed, anxious, disconnected, or shut down. Trauma is often misunderstood as a dramatic event. But psychologically, it is defined by what happens inside your nervous system when an experience overwhelms your ability to cope. Spiritually, it does not damage your soul — but it can disrupt your sense of safety, identity, and connection. This intelligent, grounded, and calm conversation bridges clinical psychology with spiritual integration — without bypassing, minimizing, or sensationalizing. In this episode, you’ll learn: • The difference between acute and chronic trauma • Fight, flight, freeze, and fawn responses • How the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems function • Why trauma is stored in physiology — not just memory • The danger of spiritual bypassing • Practical nervous system regulation tools • How to integrate psychological healing with spiritual meaning-making You’ll also receive evidence-based regulation practices including orienting, breathwork for vagal tone, and somatic awareness — alongside spiritually grounded integration tools like embodied meditation, journaling, nature immersion, and creative expression. Trauma is not weakness. It is adaptation. You are not broken. You are adaptive. This episode is for anyone navigating anxiety, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, overwhelm, or identity disruption — especially in today’s climate of global instability and digital saturation. Psychology informs the mind. Spirituality informs the meaning. Together, they inform the whole human.
