    Recorded during Print Austin, join Colleen Blackard and Allyson Augustine for a conversation about Blackard’s Italian-inspired monoprints at Flatbed Press in Austin, TX. Experiencing Italy for the first time, Blackard encountered a landscape deeply marked by human presence: hillsides shaped into farmland, gardens enclosed by walls, and cities built layer upon layer across centuries. In Assisi, Roman temples converted into churches and medieval dwellings constructed from ancient stone reveal a continuity of occupation that compresses time into place. Yet amid this enduring human imprint, nature persists—vines creep across masonry, birds nest in eaves, and vegetation erodes boundaries, quietly reclaiming the built environment. This tension between permanence and transformation informs Blackard’s monotypes. Through successive layers of ink, each impression amplifies or obscures what came before, echoing the way histories are buried, revealed, and reconfigured over time. The pressure of the press becomes an analogue for geological and cultural compression, fusing layers into images that are simultaneously natural and constructed. Augustine leads the conversation with Blackard into her ventures into the unknown and unpredictability of the monotype print medium and how it fits the psychological tension in her recent work.
