    Running for the one!

Today I chat with Katarina MacLeod is the Founder & Executive Director of Rising Angels Awareness & Restorative Care; she is also a survivor of sexual & physical abuse, drug addiction, forcible confinement, and 15 years of commercial sexual exploitation. Ms. MacLeod has been sharing her story and intimate knowledge of commercial sexual exploitation in Canada since 2010. She educates to bring awareness, trains others in survivor care and has assisted various NGOs and police services both as a valuable resource and in providing front line assistance. She works with all types of girls and women who are at risk for trafficking or prostitution, or are attempting to leave their exploitative situation. Since the striking down of key prostitution laws in Canada, Katarina has been a strong voice in the media and to government against the legalization of prostitution, and continues to advocate for the protection of exploited women. Katarina has a diploma in Addictions and Community Service, a certificate in Sexual Violence, and a Level 1 certificate in Trauma Counselling for Front Line Workers. She is a mother to 4 children and living proof of a life restored. She believes strongly that there is beauty to be brought out of the ashes of her past life.If you would like to give to the Running for the one fundraiser. (Episode #31) Running For The One

In this episode of "Life on Fire," Deidre and I share our journey of moving to Quebec and the beautiful new apartment we now call home. We dive into a significant topic: my recent ultra marathon, where I ran to raise funds for Rising Angels, an organization founded by Deidre's mom that supports women who have exited prostitution and human trafficking. We discuss the importance of mentorship for these women as they navigate their new lives after trauma. I express my gratitude for the support we've received from our community, which allows us to continue our work in ministry and for Rising Angels. Deidre highlights the critical role of education and awareness in combating human trafficking, emphasizing the need for sensitivity when discussing such heavy topics. As we reflect on my training and the challenges I faced during the race, I share how my experiences parallel the struggles of the women we aim to help. I recount the physical and mental battles I encountered, including a sprained ankle that tested my resolve. Throughout the race, I was reminded of the resilience required to overcome trauma, both in running and in life. We also touch on the broader implications of human trafficking and the societal norms that perpetuate it. Deidre and I encourage listeners to consider how they can contribute to this cause, whether through financial support or by spreading awareness. 00:00:00 - Welcome to Life on Fire Introduction to the podcast and the new apartment in Quebec. 00:00:38 - Running for the One Discussion about Brody's recent race and its purpose to raise funds for Rising Angels. 00:01:43 - The Importance of Rising Angels Overview of Rising Angels and its mission to support women exiting prostitution and human trafficking. 00:03:06 - Trigger Warning Acknowledgment of the sensitive topics of prostitution and human trafficking. 00:03:53 - Impact of Training Brody shares his experience with the Mending Broken Wings training and its effects on his perspective. 00:05:04 - Understanding Trauma Discussion on the complexities of trauma and its impact on women in the sex industry. 00:08:01 - Normalization of Exploitation Exploration of how societal norms contribute to the acceptance of pornography and prostitution. 00:10:00 - Raising Awareness Encouragement to take training on human trafficking and the importance of awareness. 00:11:10 - Brody's Race Fundraising Goals Details about the fundraising goal for Rising Angels and the current amount raised. 00:12:43 - Back-to-Back Races Brody discusses the challenges of running two races in close succession. 00:14:17 - Nighttime Race Challenges The unique difficulties of starting a race at night and its effects on performance. 00:19:01 - Injury During the Race Brody recounts spraining his ankle during the race and the mental battle that ensued. 00:22:01 - Parallel to Women's Struggles Reflection on how Brody's race experience parallels the struggles faced by women in trafficking. 00:27:22 - Motivation to Continue Brody's determination to finish the race despite injury, inspired by the women he is supporting. 00:30:30 - Community Support in Racing Discussion on the importance of community and support in both racing and recovery. 00:32:02 - The Impact of Money Exploration of how the love of money drives exploitation in the sex industry. 00:35:22 - Mentorship and Support The role of mentorship in helping women recover from trauma and rebuild their lives. 00:41:05 - Long-Term Effects of Trauma Discussion on the lasting impact of trauma on women and their families. 00:46:01 - Fighting for Change The importance of advocacy and sharing stories to combat human trafficking and support survivors.
