Six dollars and six cents. Third record in a week. A year ago, it was three seventy. Half a world away, an Iranian-backed militia took an island in one of the two narrow gaps that carry a large share of the planet's oil, and the other gap has been near a standstill since February. Brian connects the water to the pump, then goes where most coverage will not. Three parts. All of them matter. FIRST, the two straits and who holds them now. The Houthis took the port of Mocha, then crossed by boat and took Perim, the island that splits the Bab el-Mandeb into two shipping lanes. Eighteen miles wide at the narrowest point, and twelve percent of global trade moves through. The Yemeni battalions there stood at twenty percent of their paper strength. The rest were names on a roster drawing a salary. American-built armored trucks were left parked where they sat, and the Houthis are driving them through town on camera now. At the other end, Hormuz has been nearly shut since the war with Iran began, and the Saudi pipeline built to bypass it was hit Friday by drones out of Iraq. That pipeline was the workaround for the first strait, and the second is the exit it feeds. Brian walks through who armed this, who benefits, and why one Chinese tanker sailed the blockade untouched. SECOND, what happened at your pump and why diesel got hit harder than gasoline. California came in at seven ninety-eight. Oklahoma at five sixty. Five million barrels a day of refining capacity is offline worldwide, and more oil out of the ground does not make cheaper fuel when the bottleneck is the machinery that turns it into diesel. Not because people are stupid. Because almost nobody is ever taught how this part works, and the coverage moved on before it explained anything. Brian Bullock walks it through from the beginning, in plain English, with no legal degree required and no spin on either side of it. Three parts. All of them matter. FIRST, what actually happened in that house in Duxbury, and what the jury was really being asked. Here is the part most people never understood: her own attorney never argued she did not do it. Not once. He stood up and told the jury flat out that Lindsay Clancy killed those three children. There was no whodunit, no alternate suspect, no fight over forensics. The entire trial turned on a completely different question, one American courts have treated as separate for a very long time, and if you did not know that going in, the ending would not make any sense to you.     Ep. 29 - What the $40 Trillion National Debt Actually Costs You | Everyone Knows

    On August 18 the national debt of the United States passed $40 trillion. It took two hundred years to borrow the first one. The last one took five months. Fox Business ran it. So did NPR and the AP. Left, right and center, same figure, because it is not a projection. It is a bank balance. Nobody disputes the number. Every fight you hear about it is over whose fault it is. Brian Bullock skips that fight and goes after the part nobody explains. Three parts. All of them matter. FIRST, who we actually owe this money to. Most people picture China holding the paper. Wrong. The largest share sits with American pension funds, insurance companies, banks, and retirees holding Treasury bonds. Back in March the debt held by the public passed the size of the whole American economy, which has not happened since 1946, when we were paying off the Second World War. This time we did it in peacetime. Washington takes in about five trillion a year and spends about seven. It borrows about six billion dollars a day, and over half of that is interest on debt we already have. Foreign aid, the thing everybody names first when asked what to cut, is under one percent. SECOND, what the interest is doing to you. Net interest now runs about a trillion dollars a year, more than this country spends on its entire national defense. Every ship, every plane, every base, every paycheck, and the finance charge is bigger. Every other dollar in that budget buys something. Interest buys nothing. It is up more than a hundred and fifty percent since 2019, and it reaches your kitchen table, because when Washington borrows two trillion a year it stands in the same line you do for a mortgage. Then there is the receipt. All three credit rating agencies have marked this country down, including one that held us at the top since 1917. All three gave the same reason, and it was not a war or a recession. THIRD, the part that should make you angry. Everybody says nobody has ever tried to fix this. Not true. They have tried, over and over, across forty years, and there is a pattern in how each one died. There is also one stretch in living memory when this country balanced its books four years running, and the reason it worked is not what either party tells you. Brian lays out what got broken, who benefits from keeping it that way, and the two questions to put to any politician who claims to be serious about the debt. Both parties built this.     Ep. 28 - Who's Spending $517 Million on Congress This Year | Everyone Knows

    $517 million into House and Senate races, and the biggest spenders are not oil or pharma. Three of the top four did not exist twenty years ago. We are at $517 million with two months to go. At least $294 million came from four sectors, and one built a scorecard ranking your congressman on how well he lines up with their agenda. Brian Bullock pulls the filings apart, follows the money into the primaries where it decides things, and lays out the rule it is all being spent to buy. Three parts. All of them matter. FIRST, the money and the scorecard. Crypto, artificial intelligence, big tech and online sports betting are now the four biggest corporate political spenders in the country. Brian walks the playbook crypto wrote in 2024, when Fairshake took out an eighteen year Senate Banking chairman in Ohio and funded two Democrats elsewhere the same cycle. Party was never the point. AI copied it. Leading the Future raised roughly $140 million, most of it from a handful of men. A second group announced it will spend over $100 million and built a congressional scorecard, funded by the industry doing the scoring. Then the detail that sticks. Those ads never mention artificial intelligence. Reporters checked hundreds. SECOND, preemption, and what one word erases. Washington passes a national rule and every state law on the subject stops working. Last year a ten year freeze on state AI laws passed the House, tied to $42 billion in rural broadband money as leverage. Then at 4:30 in the morning on July 1st, the Senate voted 99 to 1 to strip it out. They cannot get ninety nine votes to name a post office. Brian gets into who killed it, why a Tennessee senator walked away from a compromise she had negotiated, and how seventeen Republican governors, forty state attorneys general and the Heritage Foundation ended up on the same side. Five months later it came back as an executive order. THIRD, the fight nobody is covering, and it is not the one you have been told about. This is not progressives yelling about billionaires. It starts in a high school gym in a town of fourteen thousand, residents at a microphone asking their city council questions it could not answer. The names on this side are ones you would not expect, taking real incoming from their own party. Brian names every one, and ends with the question to put to your congressman that he cannot dodge.     46% of Americans under 35 view democratic socialism favorably. Ask their newest member of Congress to name a country where it worked and she names two capitalist ones. They are on track for five. New York City has a socialist mayor at 58% approval who then went three for three as a kingmaker in Democratic primaries, taking out a five term incumbent. Gallup has favorable views of capitalism at the lowest number it has ever recorded. Brian Bullock goes through what the polling says, what these voters actually mean by the word, and the thing underneath it that nobody in Washington will say out loud. Three parts. All of them matter. FIRST, the numbers and the wins. 46% of under 35s favorable to democratic socialism. 62% of 18 to 29 year olds favorable to socialism, and 34% favorable to communism. Capitalism at 54% nationally, the lowest Gallup has ever measured. Brian's read is that most outlets have it backwards. Socialism is not surging. It has sat in the high thirties for over a decade. Capitalism is what fell out from under. Nobody converted. People quit. Then he counts the seats. Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, Denver, and now a governor's race in Wisconsin, all off one playbook. SECOND, what these voters actually mean by the word. Ask the same young Americans about free enterprise instead and 83% view it positively. Same people, different word, a forty point swing. Asked to name something good about socialism, their most common answer was nothing. Nobody volunteered state ownership. Nobody said central planning. They are picturing Scandinavia. So Brian looks at Scandinavia, where the Prime Minister of Denmark flew to Harvard to tell Americans his country is a market economy, and where there is no minimum wage law. Then he goes to the country that did the real thing, and what it cost the people there. THIRD, the question all the shouting skips. Not whether these voters are right, but why the number moved now, after sitting flat for a decade. The answer is not in any poll about ideology. It is in two ordinary pieces of paper that nearly every American under 35 already has, and once Brian sets those numbers side by side, the voting stops looking like a belief and starts looking like arithmetic.     Ep. 26 - Why Data Centers Are Raising Your Electric Bill | Everyone Knows

    Your electric bill went up 7.3 percent last year. The bigger increase is already approved and has not landed on your account yet. Why Your Power Bill Keeps Going Up And Who Already Decided It | Everyone Knows Ep. 26 Everyone Knows | Episode 26 | Starborne Studios In 2025, utilities asked state regulators for a record $31 billion in rate increases, more than double the year before. Most of it was approved. Nearly half was still sitting in front of regulators when this year started, so the money is granted and much of it has not hit your bill yet. Brian Bullock walks through where the increase came from, who was in the room when it was decided, and why nobody told you. Three parts. All of them matter. FIRST, the rate case. Your electric utility is a monopoly. There is no competitor down the road, so a state board decides what it can charge. That board does not just approve a price. It approves a rate of return, the profit it is allowed to earn on every plant, substation and power line it builds. The utility does not get rich selling you electricity. It gets rich building things and collecting a guaranteed percentage on them for the next 30 or 40 years. Brian shows you how to read the two halves of your own bill, how to pull up your state's pending rate cases in ten minutes, and why TVA customers have no hearing to go to at all. SECOND, data centers. One large facility can pull as much power as a small city, and the market monitor inside PJM, the grid operator for 65 million people, tied data center demand to $23 billion in price increases running through 2028. Seven in ten Americans now oppose one being built near them. States are banning them, taxing them and auditing them. But the national numbers do not say what the coverage says they say. Line up the ten states with the most data centers against everybody else and the price per kilowatt hour is the same. Brian lays out where the server farm is a real driver and where it is a convenient excuse for a legislature that closed its own plants early. THIRD, there is a rule sitting in state law that lets a utility charge you for a power plant before it is built, and keep charging if it never gets finished. It already cost one state about $9 billion for two reactors that have never produced a single watt, and the people there still pay for it every month on a line their bill does not show them. Then Congress took a swing at all of this and passed something 52 to 0. Unanimous. Wait until you hear what it actually does.
