Episode 4 – When Resources Shape the Schedule

In this episode, we explore the challenge of scheduling projects when resources are limited. While traditional project schedules focus on activity timing and precedence relations, real projects must also account for scarce resources such as people, equipment, and budget. This resource-constrained scheduling problem requires balancing project duration with resource availability. We discuss three common approaches to tackle this challenge: priority rule-based algorithms that generate schedules quickly, meta-heuristic methods that search for high-quality solutions, and exact optimization techniques that guarantee optimal results but may become computationally demanding for larger projects. Beyond minimizing project duration, resource-constrained scheduling can support alternative objectives such as maximizing net present value or creating smoother resource usage profiles. These different goals often lead to different schedules, highlighting the importance of clearly defining project priorities. Although finding the best schedule can be computationally challenging, resource-constrained scheduling illustrates how analytical methods help project managers make better decisions when resources are scarce.
