AB10: Dracula by Bram Stoker (Bonus Chapter)

We weren't planning on another October Bonus Chapter, but Audible dropped a brand-new full-cast adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula and we couldn't resist. JD and Mallory dive into Audible's new original production starring Jonathan Bailey, Ella Purnell, Aimee Lou Wood, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Lesley Manville, Johnny Flynn, and more. The big question: is this actually an audiobook? Unlike a traditional reading of Dracula, this version functions more like a radio play. Audible adapts Bram Stoker's novel, rewriting scenes, changing characters, and using immersive sound design and performance to create something much closer to a movie. JD and Mallory get into the differences between an audiobook, a full-cast recording, and an audio drama. What modern audiences already know about vampires that Stoker's original readers didn't, and whether changing the format changes the experience of the story itself. They also discuss Maggie Gyllenhaal as a gender swapped Van Helsing, Jonathan Bailey's much more seductive take on Dracula, Lesley Manville's standout performance, Johnny Flynn's completely committed Renfield, and the adaptation's most unforgivable decision: They cut Quincey Morris. Yes, the American cowboy who helps kill Dracula is gone, and JD and Mallory have some feelings about that. Plus: Victorian science, blood transfusions, vampire hunting as a team sport, American erasure in British adaptations, immersive sound design, angry Audible reviews, and whether this is the version of Dracula they'd ever come back to. ⚠️ This is a full spoiler discussion. We assume you've already read or listened to the book. If you've finished the book and want to spend a little more time unpacking it, this episode is for you. AB9: Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury (Bonus Chapter)

It's spooky season, so JD and Mallory are adding a little something extra to AudiYOOObooks. For the first of our seasonal Bonus Chapters, we're talking about Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes. An autumn-soaked story about two boys, one very tired father, a sinister carnival, and a carousel offering exactly the thing you think you want. JD first fell for the story through Disney's 1983 film adaptation, but Paul Giamatti's audiobook performance turned Bradbury's novel into a new October favorite. JD and Mallory dig into Bradbury's lush, poetic prose, Will and Jim's friendship, the fear of growing older, and the equally dangerous desire to grow up too quickly, and why Charles Halloway may actually be the book's true protagonist. They also talk about the novel's surprisingly moving ideas about parenthood, morality, grief, mortality, and the idea that joy isn't always something you simply feel. Sometimes choosing to participate in joy is itself an act of resistance. Mallory does, however, have some notes for Ray Bradbury about women. Plus: Paul Giamatti's narration, Mr. Dark and the mysterious Autumn People, the 1983 Disney adaptation with Jonathan Pryce and Pam Grier, childhood friendships that don't necessarily last forever, and our attempt to cast a modern version of the movie. ⚠️ This is a full spoiler discussion. We assume you've already read or listened to the book. If you've finished the book and want to spend a little more time unpacking it, this episode is for you.
