  1. The Anglerfish

    The Anglerfish

Send us Fan Mail If you’ve seen Finding Nemo, you might remember that terrifying scene with the glowing lure and the massive, toothy mouth. But the real story of the anglerfish is far more astonishing than any cartoon. These fish live in the midnight zone of the ocean – more than a mile down – where sunlight has never reached, the pressure is crushing, and food is scarce. Yet here they thrive, equipped with features so precise and interdependent that they shout of intentional design. Let’s start with their most famous tool: the fishing rod. Female anglerfish have a modified spine sticking out from their heads, called an illicium, with a bulbous tip known as the esca – basically a built-in fishing lure. Inside that lure live symbiotic bacteria that produce a soft, glowing light through a chemical reaction. The fish doesn’t make the light herself; the bacteria do. In return, she gives them a safe home and nutrients. She can even control the glow – turning it on and off or pulsing it – to mimic the movement of small prey like a wriggling worm or tiny fish. Imagine the scene: total blackness. The anglerfish waits motionless, her dark skin absorbing any stray light so she remains nearly invisible. Then she lights up her lure. Curious creatures swim closer… and SNAP! Her enormous mouth, lined with sharp, backward-pointing teeth, opens wide. Her jaw and stomach are incredibly stretchy – she can swallow prey twice her own size. One rare meal can sustain her for a long time in this food-poor world. 2. The Electric Eel

    The Electric Eel

Send us Fan Mail Imagine gliding through water so murky and oxygen-starved that sight is useless. No sunlight penetrates. Predators lurk. Yet one extraordinary creature doesn’t just survive here—it thrives, armed with a power so astonishing it can light up the darkness and stun its enemies in an instant. Today on Creation Speaks, we meet the electric eel, a living battery designed by the Creator Himself. The electric eel isn’t actually an eel at all. It belongs to a group of knifefish and carries the scientific name Electrophorus. Until just a few years ago, scientists thought there was only one species, but in 2019 researchers discovered two more: Electrophorus voltai and Electrophorus varii . These remarkable fish live in the slow-moving, muddy waters of the Amazon and Orinoco river basins in South America—think oxbow lakes, swamps, flooded forests, and side channels where the water is warm, dark, and desperately low in oxygen. What makes them perfectly suited for this challenging home? First, they are obligate air-breathers. Their gills are small and weak, so every ten minutes or so the eel must swim to the surface, gulp a big mouthful of air, and hold it while oxygen is absorbed through special folds lining the inside of its mouth. Nearly eighty percent of its oxygen comes from the air, not the water. This adaptation lets it thrive in anoxic conditions that would suffocate most other fish. 3. The Spring Peepers

    The Spring Peepers

Send us Fan Mail In the cold, still darkness of early spring— when the last ice is barely gone from the ponds and the forest floor is wet and silent— a single, tiny voice breaks the quiet. A spring peeper. No bigger than the tip of your thumb, this little tree frog emerges from its winter hibernation beneath leaf litter or mud. It climbs a reed or twig near the water’s edge and begins to sing. The sound is astonishing— a high, clear, piercing “peep!” repeated every second or two, loud enough to carry hundreds of yards. One peeper is noticeable. A dozen are loud. A hundred together create a shimmering, continuous trill that fills the entire wetland— a living wall of sound, vibrating through the night air like thousands of tiny silver bells. They sing all night, in dense choruses, each male staking his territory, calling females, announcing life renewed. And when the first warm rains come, the chorus swells even louder— a celebration that can be heard for miles. Winter was long. The ground was frozen. The peepers were silent, buried, waiting. But spring arrived. The ice melted. The water warmed. The peepers rose. And they sang. Not quietly. Not timidly. With everything in them— a deafening, joyful, unrelenting proclamation: Life is here again. The night is over. The winter is past. The weeping lasted for the night. But rejoicing has come in the morning. For additional devotions, please check out "Flashlight Eyes" and "Flashlight Eyes Volume 2" available in both the Kindle and paperback formats.
