Left for Dead

Left for Dead explores real survival stories where ordinary people faced impossible situations and lived. Each episode reconstructs events such as plane crashes, wilderness survival, maritime disasters, and mountaineering accidents through a structured, documentary-style approach. Focusing on decisions, conditions, and human endurance, the series examines how individuals survived when rescue seemed impossible. Douglas Mawson: The Antarctic Explorer Who Watched His Team Disappear and Walked On Alone

In November 1912, Antarctic explorer Douglas Mawson left Cape Denison with Xavier Mertz, Belgrave Ninnis, dog teams, sledges, and a surveying mission that was supposed to bring all three men home before the summer ship departed. More than five hundred kilometres from base, Ninnis vanished through a concealed crevasse with a sledge, six dogs, and most of the party’s food. Mawson and Mertz could see part of the lost load far below, but they could not reach it. With limited rations, no dog food, and no way to call for help, they turned west across broken glacier country. Their surviving dogs became both transport and emergency food. Then Mertz fell seriously ill. When he died in January, Mawson faced the return alone: weakened, short of food, crossing snow bridges over unseen cracks, and trying to keep a reduced sledge moving on damaged feet. Far behind him, men at Cape Denison began searching, leaving food depots in the hope that the missing party might find them. This is the documented story of the Far Eastern Party of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition: a disaster shaped by one crevasse, a chain of practical decisions, and a rescue effort constrained by weather, distance, and another stranded party waiting far to the west. It also examines the question that has never been fully settled: how much did the emergency diet that kept Mawson moving contribute to Xavier Mertz’s death? Joe Simpson: The Climber Who Crawled Out of a Crevasse With a Shattered Leg

In June 1985, British climbers Joe Simpson and Simon Yates completed the first ascent of the previously unclimbed West Face of Siula Grande in Peru’s Cordillera Huayhuash. The summit marked a major achievement, but the descent became a fight for survival when Simpson fell high on the North Ridge and catastrophically fractured his right lower leg around the knee. With no rescue team nearby and no realistic expectation of rapid outside help, Yates improvised a rope-lowering system and moved Simpson approximately 800 metres down the mountain. Then Simpson was lowered over an unseen ice cliff. Yates could not see or communicate with him, the rope remained under load, and Yates’s snow stance began to fail. Yates cut the rope. Simpson survived the fall into a crevasse. Alone beneath the glacier, severely injured and unable to climb back the way he had come, he lowered himself deeper into the ice in search of another route. After escaping onto the glacier, he spent days hopping, crawling, dragging himself, and crossing moraine toward base camp, where Yates and Richard Hawking believed he was dead. This is the documented survival story behind Touching the Void: a chain of technical decisions, harsh terrain, endurance, narrow opportunities, and a rope-cutting choice that Simpson himself later defended.
