Supervision Is Hard (and It Should Be): Lessons From Dr. Linda LeBlanc - Live from the BMBA Summit: early mistakes, the RBT-to-BCBA leap, and how to mentor without the "harsh feedback" phase

🎓 What if the hardest part of becoming a BCBA isn't the science… it's the people? At the BMBA Summit, we pulled Dr. Linda LeBlanc aside for a quick conversation, and it turned into a masterclass on supervision and mentorship. 🙌 A longtime researcher, former journal editor, and consulting agency owner, she's refreshingly honest about how she got into supervision: she wasn't naturally good at it, and her early feedback was too direct and too focused on "do it right" instead of "let me help you do it better." 💡 From there we get into the leap that surprises a lot of new BCBAs: going from RBT to BCBA means you're no longer doing the work, you're leveraging other people's efforts to help the client. We talk about why some people "get snookered" into jobs that don't match their reinforcers, why you should find your sweet spot before taking the promotion, and why covering a session might be a gift. 🎁 Then we tackle the telehealth wave. 💻 Her take isn't "it's great" or "it's terrible." It's get good in the room first, then translate it. We finish with the fun one: advice for married BCBAs who can't stop analyzing each other. Short version: your marriage is a system. 💍 If you supervise, mentor, or are about to step into a bigger role, pull up a seat. 🛋️ 🔑 IN THIS EPISODE - Why learning to be a behavior analyst is hard (and why it should be) - How early supervision mistakes become your best teachers - Why the RBT-to-BCBA jump is a bigger shift than most people expect - Know your reinforcers before you take the promotion - Telehealth works best when you've built skills in person first ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 – Meet Dr. Linda LeBlanc 🎙️ 1:27 – The Papers That Shaped How We Supervise 2:13 – Why Supervision? Rush Hour, Real Talk: First-Timers, Big Keynotes & Playlists for Hard Days A carpool conversation on why the BMBA Summit feels like a community, not a conference

🚗 Six behavior analysts. One car. Friday rush hour. Zero filter. The Keynote Carpool is officially a TRADITION. 🎉 For the second year in a row, we piled into the car at the BMBA Summit with BCBAs, a behavior technician, and a supervisor to talk about what stuck with us. Highlights include a masking workshop that made people write on actual masks, a keynote that had everyone inspired, and a live reading of a love poem (receipts included). 💌 Along the way we hear from first-timers who feel like sponges soaking up the whole conference, and we get a very fun detour into what sponges actually do. 🧽 There's also a stop for a 90s music-industry story you have to hear from the source, and it ends with the exit question: what's the one song that makes a hard day better? 🎶 This is the unpolished, "we're literally driving" side of the field: community, self-care, and the people who make a conference feel like home. Turn it up, buckle in, and pull up a seat. 🛋️ 🔑 IN THIS EPISODE - What made the BMBA Summit feel welcoming for first-timers - The masking workshop and why reflection stuck with people - Why in-person conferences beat watching sessions on replay - Self-care in the field: the songs that get behavior analysts through bad days - The "keynote carpool" tradition and why we're calling it official ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 – Welcome to the Keynote Carpool 🚗 0:22 – Roll Call: Who's in the Car? 1:16 – Two Years in a Row: It's a Tradition Now 1:37 – Any New Poems for the Wife? From Protecting Quarterbacks to Protecting ABA Clinics Why a former offensive lineman builds financial support for clinic owners

🏈💼 What does an offensive lineman have in common with an ABA clinic owner? Both are trying to keep someone from getting blindsided. At the BMBA Summit, we sat down with the founder of Bounce Back Financial, who helps ABA clinic owners connect their billing, accounting, and CFO advisory so the money side doesn't fall apart. We get into why he chose this field over bigger-margin industries (it's personal 💛), what he sees when clinics run into cash-flow trouble, and why the name "Bounce Back" fits the story behind the company. Then we talk about what we all wish grad school covered: running the business. 🧾 Why delegation and succession planning separate the clinics that last, why Medicaid rules change so much from state to state, what a prepayment audit can put at risk, and how to find a partner who shows up when things get messy. And because it's us, we also talk about what it felt like to be welcomed into the BMBA community as a non-behavior analyst, why representation matters, and a very serious debate about LA versus DC. 🎢 (Our spare room is still open.)If you own a clinic, dream of owning one, or want to know what happens after the session notes… pull up a seat. 🛋️🔑 IN THIS EPISODE- Why billing, accounting, and CFO support work better when they talk to each other- Why delegation and succession planning matter as a clinic grows- How state Medicaid differences affect clinic owners- What a prepayment audit can put at risk, and why documentation matters- Why community and representation matter in this field⏱️ CHAPTERS0:00 – Meet the Founder of Bounce Back Financial 🎙️0:36 – Who Are You? From Pre-Med to BCBA: The Clinic Tour That Changed Everything

🎙️ What happens when a pre-med hopeful takes a "why not?" tour of an ABA clinic… and never leaves? Recorded live at the BMBA Summit, we sit down with BCBA A'Daunte Bivens of Savannah, Georgia. He went from biology and exercise sports science to ABA, and now he's looking at sports, precision teaching, OBM, and even music. 🎹 Our take: the science was never about autism. It's the science of human behavior. 🌍 We also get real about imposter syndrome around big words, why plain language matters with families, and what it's like being married to someone outside ABA when you can't turn off your reinforcement radar. 😅 ("I know what you just did" is a real sentence in real homes.) If you've ever felt boxed in by what ABA "is supposed to look like"… pull up a seat. 🛋️ 🔑 IN THIS EPISODE - ABA is the science of human behavior, not just autism services - Sports, OBM, music, and wellness are growing paths for behavior analysts - Great supervisors give new clinicians room to be creative - Imposter syndrome is common, and plain language beats jargon - Conferences show you paths you can't Google ⏱️ CHAPTERS [same 20 chapters] 🔗 FOLLOW US: ▶️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheBCBAes 📱 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@the.bcbaes 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thebcbaes The BC(BAes) Podcast: Where Behavior Meets Real Life. #ABA #BCBA #BMBASummit #BehaviorAnalysis #ABAPodcast

Spontaneous Fireside Chat - Night 2 : Waves, Wobbles & Watching Our Kids Watch Everyone Else

🔥 Round two! Same campsite, same fire, one sunburn heavier — Melina and Jordan are back for night two of their fireside chat, and this time the topic that found us was observational learning. 👀Turns out camping strips away the devices and the distractions, which means kids are watching everything and everyone — for better and for worse. We talk through watching our oldest pick up big feelings from a peer at the beach, the tricky balance of correcting your kid's behavior without embarrassing them in front of others, and why this messy, unscripted environment is basically real-life "what would you do" for our kids. Then things get real: a street-safety scare turns into an unplanned lesson on urgency, dignity, and positive practice — and honestly, watching the training kick in when it actually mattered hit different. 🥹 We close it out reflecting on the whole trip (9 out of 10, waves were doing too much 🌊) — and then, true to camping form, the camera battery gave out mid-conversation. So consider this one an authentic, no-do-over ending. 😂Drop a comment: what's something your kid picked up from watching someone else — that you did NOT teach them yourself? 💬⏱️ CHAPTERS00:00 – Night 2 by the fire 🏕️00:27 – Sunburnt, dehydrated, and settled in00:44 – Beach recap: waves, lifeguards & respecting nature01:26 – Tonight's topic: observational learning02:41 – Camping = built-in exploration & social learning03:06 – When kids imitate big emotions from peers03:43 – Raising brave kids while working on yourself04:32 – Picking up new language & communication styles05:08 – The clinical case for peer settings & school05:45 – "Real-life role plays" with our kids06:25 – Giving grace while still guiding growth07:01 – The street safety scare 🚸08:14 – Why we yelled (and why that mattered)09:44 – Respecting her dignity + comfort first10:05 – Positive practice in action10:47 – "This is what it looks like for two BCBAs to be married" 😂11:36 – Context matters: impulse vs. understanding12:06 – Core memories & why the lesson stuck13:00 – Rating the trip: 9 out of 10 🌊13:34 – Wrapping up... until the camera battery said otherwise 🔋😂🔗 FOLLOW US FOR MORE📱 TikTok: @the.bcbaes📸 Instagram: @thebcbaes🌐 www.thebcbaes.com#ABAtherapy #BCBA #RBT #ObservationalLearning #ParentingInABA #BCBAparent #ABACommunity #TheBCBAes #UnscriptedPodcast #RealTalkParenting #BehaviorAnalysis

Why ABA Research Isn’t Reaching the Real World (And Who’s Responsible)

There’s a conversation happening in ABA that not enough people are talking about… and it’s this:👉 Why does so much research never actually make it into real-life practice? In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Jared Van to unpack the disconnect between researchers and practitioners—and honestly… some of it might surprise you. Does Being a BCBA Make You a Better Parent… or Just More Aware? (The Honest Truth) I The BC(BAes)

What happens when the science of behavior meets the reality of parenting… and they don’t always align? 😅In Part 2 with Nissa, we get real—like really real—about what it’s like being a BCBA and a parent.
