The West Side Made Him Who He Is Today

Eugene Morales is back for Part 2, and this conversation takes us even deeper into the stories that shaped who he became. We start by going back to the old Gold’s Gym days, when Eugene, Zach and the rest of the crew were young salesmen trying just about anything to generate leads. Before social media marketing was what it is today, they were doing what Gold’s called “guerrilla marketing” — walking into local businesses, setting up trade-outs, giving away gym memberships and finding creative ways to get people through the doors. And sometimes they got a little too creative. Eugene tells the story of doing trade-outs with bars, restaurants and even a strip club before remembering one particular promotion inside a nightclub that went completely sideways. Eugene walked away from the Gold’s Gym table for only a few minutes to grab some beers, came back — and the entire setup had been destroyed during a fight. 😂 From there, we go back to Eugene’s childhood growing up on the West Side of San Antonio. Eugene explains that he wasn’t necessarily the kid looking for trouble — but when you grow up in certain neighborhoods, you don’t choose the street you live on, the people around you or the environment you’re exposed to. He talks about neighborhood loyalty, coming of age during the height of ’90s gang culture and the huge influence his older sister had on his childhood. Eugene remembers his sister as the one who was truly about that lifestyle when they were younger. Her nickname was “The Hammer,” her boyfriend was heavily involved in the neighborhood, and Eugene recalls situations becoming serious enough that their family home was shot at and they slept on the floor for safety. Today, his sister is a completely different person — but those experiences are still part of Eugene’s story and the environment that helped shape him. We also take a trip straight back into the ’90s — Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, The Box, LA Gear, British Knights, Solo Serve, Wieners and the music, clothes and culture that defined growing up during that era. 🎙️ In this episode:  The old Gold’s Gym trade-out system  Guerrilla marketing before social media  Trading gym memberships with local businesses  Gold’s Gym employees becoming “local celebrities”  The time they tried doing a trade-out with a strip club  How Gold’s Gym generated leads  The infamous lead boxes  Getting sent out to find local businesses  The customer who flipped the sales pitch around  Trading a gym membership with a nightclub  Setting up a Gold’s Gym promotion inside the club  Eugene leaving Zach alone for three minutes  Coming back to find the entire table destroyed 😂  Growing up on San Antonio’s West Side  What kind of kid Eugene was  Neighborhood loyalty growing up  Being influenced by the people and streets around you  Eugene’s older sister and her reputation  Why her nickname was “The Hammer”  Growing up around gang culture in the ’90s  Eugene remembering their family home being shot at  How Eugene’s sister eventually changed her life  Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and ’90s hip-hop  Watching music videos on The Box  Growing up with older siblings  Solo Serve and Wieners  LA Gear and British Knights  Nike Cortez and ’90s street fashion  How Eugene’s childhood environment shaped him 🧠 Big takeaways:  You don't get to choose the neighborhood or circumstances you're born into.  The people around you can have a massive influence on your childhood.  Neighborhood loyalty meant something very different growing up in certain parts of San Antonio during that era.  Being exposed to a lifestyle doesn't mean you have to remain part of it.  People can completely transform while still acknowledging their past.  Older siblings can shape everything from the music you listen to and clothes you wear to how you understand the world.  Some experiences seem normal as a kid because you don't have anything else to compare them to.  Looking back at where you came from can give you a completely different appreciation for where you are today. ⏱️ CHAPTERS / TIMESTAMPS 00:00 Gold’s Gym Trade-Out Stories  00:44 Taking Guerrilla Marketing Outside the Gym  01:14 Trading Gym Memberships at a Strip Club 😂  03:05 Getting Sent Out to Find Trade-Outs  03:56 The Gold’s Gym Lead Boxes  04:45 When the Customer Became the Salesman  05:17 Trading a Membership With a Nightclub  06:27 Doing a Gold’s Gym Promotion at Night  07:05 Young & Wild at Gold’s Gym  07:59 “We’re Here to Work” 😂  08:44 Eugene Leaves for Three Minutes  09:00 The Entire Table Gets Destroyed  09:53 Going Back to Eugene’s Childhood  10:07 Growing Up on San Antonio’s West Side  10:48 Neighborhood Loyalty  11:42 Eugene’s Sister Was the Wild One  13:05 Not Glorifying the Past  13:09 Growing Up Around Gang Culture  13:42 Their Family Home Gets Shot At  14:22 Growing Up on ’90s Hip-Hop  14:38 Bone Thugs-N-Harmony & The Box  15:13 How Eugene’s Sister Influenced Him  15:47 Remember Solo Serve & Wieners?  15:58 LA Gear & British Knights  16:38 Growing Up With West Side Culture  17:16 How Eugene’s Sister Changed  18:21 Growing Up With Tough Siblings 📢 About the Podcast Anything & Everything with Matt Reyna is about exactly that — anything and everything. Never Forget Where You Came From

Eugene Morales joins me for Part 1 of a conversation that's been more than a decade in the making. Eugene was one of my earliest partners when we worked together at Armadillo Homes, one of my early mentors in real estate, and ultimately became one of my closest friends. What's crazy is that Eugene was also there when I first talked about wanting to start a podcast — and we actually recorded a rough test episode together more than a decade ago. Now everything comes full circle as Eugene finally joins me on Anything & Everything. We go back to Eugene's childhood growing up on the West Side of San Antonio and talk about poverty, family, happiness and why sometimes you don't realize what you didn't have until you're older. Eugene also opens up about once feeling ashamed to talk about where he came from — and eventually realizing that his story was exactly what could help him connect with and empower other people. From there, we get into real estate, homeownership, why people become complacent, Grant Cardone, Dave Ramsey, financial advice that doesn't apply to everybody, and why there's rarely one financial strategy that works for every person. And because Eugene and I have known each other forever, we eventually start telling stories from the old days — including Gold's Gym, John Hope and a supposed heart attack that turned into one hell of a story. 😂 🎙️ In this episode:  How Matt and Eugene originally met  Working together at Armadillo Homes  Eugene being one of Matt's earliest real estate mentors  The podcast test Matt and Eugene recorded over a decade ago  Eugene growing up on San Antonio's West Side  Growing up in poverty without realizing you were poor  Why simple times can become some of your best memories  Eugene becoming ashamed of his upbringing  Learning to embrace where you came from  How Eugene's childhood shaped his real estate career  Helping people believe homeownership is possible  Why you can't save everybody  Complacency and the constant climb toward success  Buying vs. renting  Why financial advice isn't one-size-fits-all  Matt's problem with Grant Cardone's homeownership advice  Eugene's problem with Dave Ramsey 😂  Saving money vs. making more money  Gary Vee and communicating authentically  San Antonio slang that never leaves you  The old Gold's Gym days  John Hope stories  Eugene rushing John to the doctor thinking he was having a heart attack 🧠 Big takeaways:  Growing up without much can completely change your relationship with success.  You don't necessarily realize you're poor when everyone around you lives similarly.  Your past can become an asset instead of something you're ashamed of.  Homeownership can feel impossible until someone gives you an actual path.  Financial advice needs context — what works for a millionaire may not work for an average family.  Having a blueprint means nothing if you're unwilling to follow it.  Sometimes increasing your income can be more powerful than obsessing over cutting every expense. ⏱️ CHAPTERS / TIMESTAMPS 00:00 Introducing Eugene Morales  00:46 Eugene Turns the Interview Around on Matt  01:23 Matt & Eugene's Original Podcast Test  02:03 What Eugene Taught Matt About Sales  02:56 Going Back to Eugene's Childhood  03:09 Growing Up on San Antonio's West Side  04:06 Growing Up in Poverty  04:38 "We Didn't Know We Were Poor"  05:32 Do People Forget Where They Came From?  05:39 Eugene Was Once Ashamed of His Past  06:27 Turning His Story Into His Purpose  07:40 Why People Become Complacent  07:59 Buying a Home in a Difficult Market  08:43 Matt's Problem With Grant Cardone  09:54 Is Homeownership Really a Bad Investment?  10:40 Eugene's Problem With Dave Ramsey 😂  11:27 Why Financial Success Doesn't Have to Be Complicated  12:47 Making $10K vs. Saving $10K  13:34 Growing Up With San Antonio Slang  14:06 Remembering the Old Gold's Gym Days  15:07 Introducing John Hope 😂  15:50 Eugene's Legendary Stories  16:12 "I Think I'm Having a Heart Attack"  17:00 Eugene Rushes John to the Doctor 📢 About the Podcast Anything & Everything with Matt Reyna is about exactly that — anything and everything. Tyson, Ali, Mayweather & Our Top 5 Boxers Ever

Rob Menn is back for the fifth and final part of our conversation, and we're ending this one with some serious fight debates. We start by talking about investing based on cultural trends, whether the massive amount of money pouring into artificial intelligence is creating an AI bubble, and how recognizing where society is heading could potentially create investment opportunities. Then we get into Rob's world: fighting. We debate the greatest UFC fighters of all time, Anderson Silva vs. Jon Jones, whether wrestling is scored too heavily in MMA, and whether AI could eventually do a better job judging fights. From there, we move into boxing and debate Floyd Mayweather's defensive style, whether winning rounds is the same thing as actually beating your opponent, Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, and ultimately our Top 5 boxers of all time. The Greatest Movies of the 80s & 90s

Rob Menn is back for Part 3, and this conversation starts with one simple question: What are the greatest movies of the 80s and 90s? From Bloodsport, Rocky and First Blood to Terminator 2, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Batman, The Crow and The Shawshank Redemption, Matt and Rob revisit the movies they grew up watching and debate which ones still hold up today. They also revisit The Odyssey and compare it against movies like 300, Troy, Braveheart and Gladiator before getting into Batman, Joker, why people don't go to movie theaters like they used to, and whether Hollywood simply isn't making movies the same way anymore. Then the conversation takes a completely different turn: The Matrix, Neo, the Architect, simulation theory — and the question of whether we could actually be living inside one right now. 🎙️ In this episode:  Top movies of the 80s  Why Bloodsport still holds up Rocky, First Blood and classic action movies The Odyssey vs. 300, Troy, Braveheart & Gladiator Christopher Nolan's greatest movies  Why Inception was perfectly cast  Top movies of the 90s Terminator 2 and the original Ninja Turtles Seeing TMNT for the first time  Michael Keaton vs. Christian Bale vs. Ben Affleck  Is The Dark Knight trilogy the greatest ever?  Why Batman Begins deserves more respect  Joaquin Phoenix's JokerThe Crow and dark comic-book movies  The insane year of movies that gave us Shawshank Redemption Why people stopped going to movie theaters F1 and movies that are still worth seeing in theaters  Why The Matrix didn't need a fourth movie  Neo, the Architect and the meaning behind The Matrix Could we actually be living in a simulation? 🧠 What you'll hear:  The movies Matt and Rob can rewatch endlessly  What separates a great movie from a great-looking movie  Why casting matters so much  Why the 80s and 90s produced so many memorable films  What changed about the movie theater experience  The deeper religious and philosophical ideas behind The Matrix Rob's take on the probability that our reality is a simulation ⏱️ CHAPTERS / TIMESTAMPS 00:00 Top 5 Movies of the 80s 00:08 Bloodsport, Rocky & First Blood 01:14 Great Movies That Are Hard to Rewatch 01:25 The Odyssey vs. 300, Troy & Braveheart 02:14 The Odyssey vs. Gladiator 02:30 What The Odyssey Got Wrong 04:02 Is Christopher Nolan Hit or Miss? 04:28 Nolan's Greatest Movies 05:07 Why Inception Was Perfectly Cast 06:00 Top 5 Movies of the 90s 06:14 The Original Ninja Turtles Still Holds Up 07:39 Seeing the Ninja Turtles for the First Time 07:58 Batman '89 & Michael Keaton 08:25 Who Is the Best Batman? 08:40 The Greatest Movie Trilogy Ever? 09:16 Why Batman Begins Is Underrated 10:46 Joaquin Phoenix's Joker 12:13 Why Joker 2 Didn't Work 12:55 The Darkest Superhero Movies 13:12 Shawshank Redemption & Stephen King 13:42 The Incredible Movies of the 90s 14:18 Why People Stopped Going to Movie Theaters 15:42 F1 & Movies Worth Seeing in Theaters 16:31 What Went Wrong With Matrix 4? 17:09 Why the Original Matrix Was Perfect 18:07 The Matrix & Simulation Theory 19:24 Are We Actually Living in a Simulation? 📢 About the Podcast Anything & Everything with Matt Reyna is about exactly that — anything and everything. What Happens If AI Becomes Self-Aware?

What happens when artificial intelligence stops simply following instructions and starts making decisions on its own? In Part 4 with Rob Menn, we pick up right where our simulation conversation left off and go deep into AI, consciousness, AGI, humanoid robots and whether we're slowly creating our own real-life version of Skynet. We debate whether AI could ever prioritize its own preservation, what happens when advanced AI gets connected to physical robots, why military applications will likely push robotics forward, and whether regular people could have humanoid robots living in their homes within the next few years. Drew Fuentes on Real Estate, Failure and Betting on Yourself

In Part 4 of Drew Fuentes’ return to Anything & Everything with Matt Reyna, Matt and Drew have an unfiltered conversation about the realities of working in real estate. They discuss unrealistic client expectations, inexperienced agents discounting their services and the years of knowledge behind every successful transaction. They also explain something many buyers and sellers overlook: Realtors and new-home sales consultants do not get paid unless the deal closes. Months of work—and thousands of dollars in expected income—can disappear because of one last-minute financial decision. Matt reflects on betting on himself by moving into the mortgage business, facing setbacks during a difficult market and becoming more resilient through failure. Drew explains why helping people buy homes the right way already creates a meaningful impact. The conversation later shifts to timeshares, fighters, alcohol, law enforcement and why jiu-jitsu could be an essential tool for personal defense. 🎙️ In this episode: • Giving people honest financial and career advice • Why clients sometimes have unrealistic expectations • What buyers and sellers are actually paying professionals for • The experience behind a real estate commission • Why discounting commissions can hurt the industry • How inexperienced agents create bad expectations • Running a business as a real estate professional • Why Realtors do not get paid until closing • How one decision can ruin months of work • Losing thousands of dollars when a deal collapses • Matt’s experience moving into the mortgage business • Betting on yourself when success is not guaranteed • Becoming more resilient through difficult circumstances • Why challenging deals can produce the greatest rewards • Making a positive impact through real estate • Timeshare sales and the business of escaping contracts • Fighters, alcohol and dangerous public confrontations • Why police officers are learning jiu-jitsu • The importance of knowing how to defend yourself ⏱️ Chapters: 0:00 Advice People Refuse to Follow 0:58 The Occupational Hazards of Real Estate 1:05 Managing Unrealistic Client Expectations 1:34 Clients Are Paying for Experience 2:07 The Problem With Discounting Commissions 2:43 “What Are You Going to Give Me?” 3:33 Realtors Are Running Businesses 3:59 How Bad Industry Habits Spread 4:27 Experience and a Proven Track Record 5:07 Realtors Don’t Get Paid Until Closing 5:54 Drew’s Long-Term Purpose 6:22 Matt’s Experience in the Mortgage Business 6:32 A Sign From God or Bad Timing? 7:16 Betting on Yourself 8:25 Becoming Stronger Through Failure 9:04 Why Difficult Deals Can Pay the Most 10:10 Making a Difference Through Real Estate 10:42 Door-to-Door Sales and Timeshares 11:18 The Timeshare Documentary 12:24 Fighters, Alcohol and Public Confrontations 13:46 Could the Situation Have Turned Violent? 14:30 Why Police Officers Train Jiu-Jitsu 15:18 Every Man Should Know Self-Defense 15:52 The Steven Seagal Debate 📲 Follow Matt Reyna: Instagram: https://instagram.com/mattreyna2023 Facebook: https://facebook.com/matt.reyna.12 #AnythingAndEverythingPodcast #MattReyna #DrewFuentes #RealEstate #RealtorLife #RealEstateCommission #CommissionSales #NewHomeSales #SalesProfessionals #BetOnYourself #Resilience #JiuJitsu #SanAntonio #TexasPodcast #RealTalk
