Midlife: Rethinking Identity, Purpose, Self-Care & What Comes Next | Dr Wendy Sweet

How much of the life you’re living has been consciously chosen — and how much has been shaped by roles, expectations and social norms you may never have thought to question? Midlife can offer an interesting opportunity to question some of those assumptions. What once worked may no longer work in quite the same way. Our bodies change. The roles that have shaped us begin to shift. Work, relationships and family responsibilities evolve. And somewhere amongst all of that, questions about identity, purpose and what we want from the years ahead can begin to surface. In this conversation, I’m joined by Dr Wendy Sweet, founder of My Menopause Transformation. Wendy’s path took her from nursing and the fitness industry back into academia in her 50s, where her PhD research led her to question assumptions about menopause and healthy ageing. We explore the often-unnoticed influence of our social environment — how the people and environments around us can shape what we believe is normal, expected and even possible for us. We also explore what happens when familiar approaches to health and exercise no longer seem to fit, and how women can navigate the noise of conflicting midlife advice. But the conversation reaches well beyond physical health. We explore purpose, identity and community as dimensions of healthy ageing; the relationship between work and identity; retirement and workplace ageism; and some of the social and cultural forces shaping how we think about ageing, independence and care. Underlying it all is a much more personal question: What do I want for me? After years shaped by careers, relationships, family responsibilities and the needs of others, making space for that question can be significant. Not because we can control where life takes us, but because we can question what no longer fits and become more intentional about what comes next. As Wendy says during our conversation: “We can only reflect in quiet moments.” And perhaps creating those quiet moments gives us the opportunity to discover which parts of the life ahead are still ours to shape. 00:00 — Midlife: Rethinking Purpose, Identity and What Comes Next00:58 — Meet Dr Wendy Sweet02:36 — When Your Worldview Expands04:39 — The Hidden Influence of Your Social Environment08:46 — How New Environments Can Expand What Is Possible14:39 — Following Curiosity17:13 — When the Exercise Advice Doesn't Fit the Woman20:55 — Getting to Know Your Body All Over Again23:57 — Beyond the Noise: What Do You Really Need?26:38 — How Social and Political Forces Shape Our View of Ageing29:56 — “This Isn't Working… I Wonder Why?”31:07 — The Importance of Purpose, Identity & Community for Healthy Ageing35:08 — Rethinking Purpose, Work and Retirement36:43 — Ageism, Experience and Value in the Workplace37:39 — The Changing Culture of Elder Care40:43 — What Do I Want for Me?42:36 — Learning to Navigate & Embrace Change45:20 — Understanding Your Unique Response to Midlife46:16 — Learning From the Women Before Us47:25 — Taking a Holistic Approach to Healthy Ageing49:01 — Rethinking What It Means to Look After Yourself53:09 — We Can Only Reflect in Quiet Moments54:28 — The Power of Seeing What's Possible56:24 — Final Reflections57:25 — Where Change Really Begins58:02 — Disclaimer This conversation is for women navigating midlife and anyone interested in questioning the assumptions we carry about ageing, identity and what comes next. Katie O'Leary | Becoming Someone I Never Thought I Could Be

How environment shapes identity—and who we become when we step beyond the limits we've inherited. ______ There are moments in life that seem to arrive before the explanation. A place you can't stop thinking about.A feeling you can't rationalise.A version of yourself that appears briefly and refuses to disappear. For Katie O'Leary, that moment arrived in Switzerland. But this story begins much earlier. Years before moving abroad, Katie reached a point where her life had become unmanageable. The choices she made from that point forward set her on a path of personal and spiritual transformation that changed how she saw herself, what she believed was possible, and ultimately the life she would build. By the time Switzerland entered the picture, Katie had already transformed once. What followed was something different. Not a dramatic leap, but a gradual recognition that the life she had built was no longer the full expression of who she was becoming. This conversation explores what happens when we encounter a different version of ourselves, how environment quietly shapes identity, and why some of the most important changes in our lives begin long before we can explain them. In this conversation: • The turning point that began Katie's transformation• What happens when the life you've built no longer feels like the full expression of who you're becoming• The experience of encountering a different version of yourself• Learning to trust what keeps calling you forward• How environment shapes identity more than we realise• The hidden influence of culture, place, and circumstance on who we become• Becoming someone she never thought she could be• The difference between comfort and alignment ______ Chapters: 00:00 Introduction: the pull that doesn't make sense01:29 The life Katie had built03:28 Success, image, and becoming "grown up"04:35 The business trip that changed something05:30 Wanting to be the person she was becoming07:38 Leaving her heart in Lausanne08:37 When a delayed flight felt like an answer09:56 Learning to trust what didn't make sense10:46 Turning a feeling into action11:55 What if this became a life?13:06 Exploring study as a way in13:48 Designing a 90-day experiment15:46 Realising she didn't want to leave16:52 When the desire didn't waver19:05 When the plan kept changing20:00 The turning point that changed everything21:49 The life she never imagined23:03 The first step: asking for help24:40 Support, reason, and grounded encouragement27:05 Inherited permission and role models28:21 When environment calls out another self30:12 Becoming someone she never thought she could be32:30 Creating space to be of service34:16 Why she needed a different environment36:00 The next dream taking shape40:28 The unexpected gifts of taking a leap42:13 Why most people don't do this43:16 Reflection: who are we beneath our environment?44:51 Closing _____ — About Uncharted You —Uncharted You is a long-form exploration of identity, reinvention, and the limits we inherit.
