How the U.S. and China are influencing Africa's digital future

By 2050, roughly a quarter of the world's population will be African. The choices being made right now about the continent's digital infrastructure will shape who benefits from that growth for decades. I talk with Dr. Bulelani Jili, a Georgetown professor who studies AI sovereignty, digital colonialism, and Africa-China relations, about how American and Chinese influence actually show up across Africa. We trace it back to the 1980s, when China's Go Out Strategy sent state-backed companies like Huawei into markets that American and European firms were retreating from. That's how we end up with today's split across the African continent: China building the hard infrastructure, American software and apps running on top of it. We also get into the debt African governments are now carrying, the risk that Africa becomes what Jili calls "the janitorial staff of AI," and what it would take for African countries to gain more control over their own digital future.

AI is projected to add 1.2 trillion dollars to the African economy by 2030. But what does a realistic path to AI adoption actually look like? Dr. Fola Adeleke, Executive Director of the Global Center on AI Governance and its African Observatory on Responsible AI, explains in this first episode of the AI Elsewhere podcast. Full transcript available here. Massive thanks to Hasham Cheema for the original music and for mixing this episode.
