    Episode 7 - What Journaling Can't Give You (That Creative Writing Can)

    What’s the difference between journaling and creative writing - and which one are you being called towards right now? In this episode, let's explore the beautiful line between writing to process your own life and writing to create a story beyond yourself. Journaling can be a mirror: a place to untangle thoughts, emotions, conversations, memories, and the things that circle in your head at three in the morning. Creative writing can be a doorway: a way to become someone else for a while, build a world, and sometimes tell the truest version of your own story through a character, a scene, or a voice that isn’t directly yours. You’ll hear reflections on journaling, fiction, truth, distance, disguise, and the quiet magic of letting the page show you something you didn’t know you were ready to see.     Episode 6 - The lost art of the penpal: why slow letters changed how I see the world

    It's 1994. I am 18 years old, sitting at a chaotic bedroom desk, writing a letter in my best handwriting to a girl called Chris in Austria. I had never met her. We would write to each other for three years. In this episode, I make the case for slow letters: what they give us that a text or email never can, why waiting for a reply is its own quiet joy, and what Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West knew about putting the truest things on paper.     Episode 4 - Letters from the Shed: Write a letter to someone you love — living or not

    Think of someone you love. When did you last truly tell them what they mean to you? This week in the Writing Shed is different. There's less talking from me, and more space for you. Because today, we're writing a letter. To anyone: living or not, present or thirty years gone. I open with a beautiful trunk full of letters, my mother's handwriting, and the things that went unsaid. I make room for writing to the dead; not morbidly, but tenderly, as one of the most human things a writer can do. And then I step back, and hand you the page. Four questions to help you begin.     Episode 3 - What does it mean to romanticise your life - and why writing is the fastest way there?

    One afternoon, Dani went for a walk she almost didn't take. She put her headphones in, ready to be productive. And then she stopped. And took them out. And wrote one paragraph on her phone, standing under the trees. That paragraph changed something. This episode is about romanticising your life — not the Instagram version, but the Romantic-poet version: paying fierce, deliberate attention to the ordinary things before they slip past. And why writing is, without question, the fastest way to see what's already there.     Episode 2 - What I Found in my Mother's Letters

    There's a trunk in my Writing Shed covered in roses and butterflies and French script. Inside it lives some of my most precious possessions: letters and notes from my mother. In this episode I'm opening that trunk and sharing what I found inside. What her letters taught me about love, about presence, and about the voices we almost lose. And how, when she died suddenly and I was travelling alone with nowhere to put my grief, I picked up a pen and started writing back. This episode is for anyone who has ever lost someone they love. And for anyone who has words they never got to say.     Welcome to "In the Writing Shed with Dani Pescuma": a cosy, creative space for women who feel the quiet pull toward storytelling, but aren't sure yet if they're "allowed" to call themselves writers. Every Tuesday, I'll open a door for you. Sometimes we'll talk about finding your voice - the one underneath all the noise and the self-doubt. Sometimes we'll explore the extraordinary power of letters, and the lives they carry across time. And sometimes we'll simply slow down enough to notice the magic that's already in your everyday life, and turn it into a story. This isn't a writing course. There's no pressure to be perfect, no plot outlines to fill in, and no experience required. All you need is a little curiosity and the tiniest spark of imagination. I'm Dani Pescuma, writer, mentor, and MA in Creative Writing, and I'm recording this from a real shed at the bottom of my garden, which has somehow become the warmest, most creative corner of my world.
