Episode 62: Dr. David Shapiro-From Orthodox Judaism to Servant of Christ

What happens when a man raised in Orthodox Judaism walks away from faith entirely, becomes an atheist, and eventually finds himself confronting the claims of Jesus Christ? In this episode of The Lions for Christ Podcast, Pastor Noel sits down with Dr. David Shapiro, Christian apologist, author, speaker, Bible teacher, pastor, and former Orthodox Jew. Dr. Shapiro’s path took him from Jewish religious tradition into atheism and eventually to faith in Jesus Christ. Today, much of his ministry is devoted to helping Christians and skeptics examine the historical, biblical, archaeological, and logical evidence behind Christianity. Dr. David Shapiro And this conversation doesn’t stay on the surface. Pastor Noel asks Dr. Shapiro what it was about Jesus that ultimately changed his life and what he discovered about God after becoming a Christian that he hadn’t understood before. They also tackle a question Christians sometimes avoid: Do we use “just have faith” as an excuse not to investigate whether what we believe is actually true? That opens the door to apologetics. How much evidence should matter to a Christian? Can faith survive serious examination? What does history tell us about Scripture? What can archaeology contribute? What about fulfilled prophecy, manuscript evidence, and the historical case surrounding the resurrection of Jesus? Those are central themes in Dr. Shapiro’s book, Unshakeable: The Evidence Behind the Bible, which presents his case for the reliability of Scripture through history, prophecy, archaeology, manuscripts, and the resurrection. Dr. David Shapiro But evidence is only part of this conversation. Because of Dr. Shapiro’s Jewish background, Pastor Noel asks what Christians often miss about the Jewish context of Jesus and the New Testament. Jesus didn’t walk through first-century Israel as a twenty-first-century American Christian. Understanding the world He entered, the Hebrew Scriptures, Jewish culture, and the expectations surrounding the Messiah can change the way Christians read passages they may have skimmed over for years. The conversation then turns inward. What’s the difference between biblical obedience and religious legalism? Why can religious pride be more difficult to recognize than sins everybody already agrees are wrong? And how can pastors and church leaders teach holiness, obedience, accountability, and biblical standards without slowly creating a church culture built around rules, appearances, fear, or spiritual superiority? That matters because defending truth isn’t enough if we become unbearable while doing it. Pastor Noel and Dr. Shapiro also discuss how Christians can defend their faith without becoming arrogant or argumentative. Apologetics should never become a theological boxing match where winning the argument becomes more important than reaching the person standing across from you. The conversation also moves into mental health and spiritual health. Christians sometimes make the mistake of treating every emotional or psychological struggle as nothing more than a spiritual failure. At the opposite extreme, spiritual realities can be ignored completely. Pastor Noel asks Dr. Shapiro how believers should understand the relationship between the mind, emotional health, spiritual health, faith, and practical help. And for the person who is simply worn down, mentally exhausted, spiritually discouraged, or wondering where to begin again, the discussion gets practical. Then the conversation comes back to the central question behind Dr. Shapiro’s book: If someone genuinely doubts the Bible, what evidence is hardest to simply dismiss? This episode is for the Christian who wants more than slogans. It’s for the skeptic who has legitimate questions. It’s for the believer who has wondered whether asking difficult questions somehow demonstrates weak faith. And it’s for the person who has discovered that religion and a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ aren’t always the same thing. Questions aren’t the enemy of faith. Truth has nothing to fear from examination. And at the end of all the history, archaeology, philosophy, theology, and evidence stands the question every person eventually has to confront: Who is Jesus Christ? Dr. Shapiro’s own journey took him from Orthodox Judaism, through atheism, and ultimately to the conclusion that Jesus was someone he could no longer simply dismiss. His work today seeks to help others examine those same questions seriously. Episode 61: Ryan McVey A World of Pain to God's Purpose

What happens when the identity you built around strength, service, and achievement can no longer hold you together? Ryan McVey has spent much of his life running toward trouble rather than away from it. He is a husband, father, U.S. Marine Corps veteran, former firefighter and paramedic, safety consultant, filmmaker, actor, speaker, coach, and founder of Pain to Purpose Ministries. But this episode isn’t about Ryan’s résumé. It’s about surrender. Ryan joins Pastor Noel to talk honestly about searching for identity through achievement, giving his life to Jesus Christ, and walking through seasons of loss, failure, and brokenness. When the identity Ryan had constructed began falling apart, God revealed the man He was calling Ryan to become. What appeared to be the end of Ryan’s story became the beginning of a greater mission. Ryan shares how God unexpectedly opened the door into the film industry, where his experience in leadership and emergency services prepared him to serve in production safety and acting. A new career quickly became a new mission field, revealing the power of storytelling to bring hope, encourage healing, and point people toward Jesus Christ. The conversation also explores One More: Stories of Hope, Ryan’s effort to share the stories of veterans and others who have faced suicidal thoughts but found a reason to keep living. Every honest testimony carries the possibility of reaching one more person, restoring one more family, and saving one more life. Pastor Noel and Ryan also discuss biblical manhood, marriage, fatherhood, leadership, coaching, and the future of Pain to Purpose Ministries. Ryan’s goal isn’t to build another platform. It’s to build people and help men become the husbands, fathers, and leaders God created them to be. This episode is for the veteran, first responder, husband, father, leader, or believer who has been strong for everybody else while quietly falling apart. Failure hasn’t disqualified you. Pain doesn’t get the final word. Your story isn’t over. When a life is surrendered to Jesus Christ, God can transform pain into purpose, brokenness into ministry, and the chapter you thought would destroy you into a testimony that helps save somebody else. Episode 60: Tom Creel: Bar Funny but Church Clean

What happens when God takes regret, disappointment, lost dreams, and a bizarre sense of humor and turns them into a second chance? In this episode of The Lions for Christ, Pastor Noel sits down with comedian Tom Creel for a conversation filled with clean comedy, honest reflection, encouragement, and plenty of laughter. Tom describes his comedy as “funny enough for a bar and clean enough for a church.” His material comes from his unique way of looking at ordinary life, finding humor in unexpected places, and recognizing that sometimes laughter is exactly what people need to keep moving forward. But behind the jokes is a much deeper story. Tom has walked through tears of regret and the valley of despair. He knows what it feels like to lose hope, watch dreams disappear, and reach a place where it seems as though everything has fallen apart. Yet even when Tom thought his story was over, God was still working. Through the restoring power of the Holy Spirit, God began rebuilding what had been broken. He gave Tom hope to dream again, the courage to step back onto a stage, and a new purpose for the unusual personality and sense of humor God had placed inside him. Tom’s story is a reminder that failure doesn’t have to be final. Regret doesn’t get the last word. The painful chapters of our lives can become part of the testimony God uses to reach someone else. During the episode, Tom shares part of his comedy set and talks about how he got started in comedy, where his jokes come from, the audiences he enjoys performing for, and some of the strange and funny moments that can happen during a live show. Pastor Noel and Tom also discuss what he is working on next, where people can see him perform, and how they can follow and support his comedy. This episode is funny, uplifting, and honest. It’s for anyone who has ever wondered whether they have made too many mistakes, waited too long, lost too much, or wandered too far to begin again. Tom Creel’s life proves that God can take a man who believed he had lost everything and give him new hope, new dreams, and a new reason to make people laugh. Second chances are real. Restoration is possible. And sometimes God uses a microphone, a comedy stage, and one wonderfully bizarre outlook on life to remind people that their story isn’t finished. Episode 59: Chris Price: From Heavy Metal to Sowing Seeds Radio

EPISODE DESCRIPTION What happens when a man who once used radio and heavy metal to build an international audience decides to use that same voice to tell people about Jesus? In this episode of The Lions for Christ, Pastor Noel sits down with musician, radio personality, husband, father, and grandfather Chris Price for an honest conversation about faith, church hurt, heavy metal, second chances, and the purpose God can bring out of a complicated life. Chris gave his life to Christ at a Youth for Christ camp in 1985. However, his early years in the Church weren’t easy. He often felt like the outsider and eventually became the convenient person to blame when others made bad decisions. The judgment and mistreatment he experienced from Christians didn’t pull him closer to God. It pushed him away. Chris describes reaching a point where he became exactly what people in the church had already accused him of being. Enter the metal years. Chris formed the band Carnal Fixx, performed countless shows, and built friendships with musicians, rock stars, and people throughout the music industry. Although the band eventually separated and Chris stepped away from music for several years, his love for hard rock and heavy metal never disappeared. His life took another unexpected turn when a man who had been driving trucks in central Kansas was offered a position at a radio station. That opportunity gave birth to “The Animal,” Chris’s loud, unpredictable, and popular on-air personality. His humor, unusual topics, and willingness to say what other people wouldn’t made him a local legend. Chris eventually created Big Hair-Ocolyps, which later became The All Things Metal Show. Under his ownership, the program was syndicated internationally and reached hundreds of thousands of listeners. But behind the microphone, the music, and the personality, God still wasn’t finished with Chris. In January 2026, Chris experienced what he describes as a come-to-Jesus moment. His faith was revived, his direction changed, and the same gifts he had used throughout his career began taking on a new purpose. Today, Chris hosts Sowing Seeds Radio Ministry, a Christian rock and metal program dedicated to bringing the light of Jesus into a world filled with darkness. Through music, interviews, biblical encouragement, humor, and honest conversation, Chris is reaching people who may never feel comfortable walking through the doors of a traditional church. This conversation tackles the damage that can happen when Christians care more about making an example out of someone than helping restore them. It also challenges the idea that a person must fix every problem, abandon every struggle, and make themselves presentable before they can approach God. Chris puts it another way: “You don’t have to get cleaned up to take a bath.” You come to Jesus because you need cleansing. You come because you need grace. You come because you cannot repair yourself from the inside out. Chris also shares the heart behind his work with young musicians, including a band camp that gave children access to instruments, musical instruction, and the opportunity to perform. At the end of the camp, the students were allowed to keep the equipment. It was Chris’s way of giving young people something meaningful to pursue before destructive choices could take control of their lives. This episode is for the person who has been hurt by the Church but still feels God calling them home. It is for the musician who wonders whether their gifts can be used for the Kingdom. It is for the believer who doesn’t fit the traditional mold. And it is for anyone who has ever believed they were too dirty, too different, or too far gone for Jesus. God loves you. Jesus loves you. And you have a purpose in the Kingdom that only you can fulfill. You don’t have to clean yourself up before coming to Christ. Come to Him. Let Him begin the cleansing. Episode 58: Jesus Met Me in the Darkness: Serina Lane's Story

What happens when the pain you buried for years begins to come back to the surface? In this deeply personal episode of The Lions for Christ, Pastor Noel sits down with Serina Lane, author of Laugh At Cancer, for a powerful conversation about faith, childhood trauma, suicidal thoughts, forgiveness, healing, cancer, and the love of Jesus Christ. Serina shares that she first accepted Christ at age 13, but spent many years living apart from Him. At age 34, everything changed when she had a powerful encounter with the love of God. She describes feeling overwhelmed by His love and walking away from that moment determined to know Jesus in a deeper way. Years later, Serina faced another battle. She shares the story behind her book, Laugh At Cancer, including a spiritual experience in which she saw Jesus laughing at a cancer cell. Serina explains how she began praying, speaking healing Scriptures over herself every day, and holding tightly to passages such as Isaiah 53. Serina shares her personal testimony that Jesus healed her from cancer and explains how that experience changed the way she understood faith, fear, and the finished work of the cross. But the conversation goes much deeper than cancer. Serina opens up about painful memories of childhood sexual abuse that surfaced during her healing journey. She talks about years of disturbing thoughts, fear, spiritual warfare, and suicidal despair. She explains how she understood many of those experiences as spiritual oppression and how prayer, forgiveness, and continuing to seek Jesus became part of a long healing process. One of the strongest parts of this conversation is Serina’s journey toward forgiveness. She explains that forgiveness did not begin because she suddenly felt better about what happened. It began with a decision to obey God and speak the words of forgiveness even while the pain was still there. Pastor Noel and Serina also discuss an important truth: forgiveness does not mean pretending abuse was acceptable. It does not mean removing healthy boundaries. And it does not mean that trust must automatically be restored. Forgiveness is about refusing to allow the person who hurt you to continue controlling your life. Serina also shares how childhood abuse affected her ability to trust authority figures and how healing changed the way she responded to pastors and other leaders. This episode is for anyone who has carried shame. Anyone who has been abused. Anyone who has wondered whether healing is possible. Anyone who has fought thoughts that told them life was no longer worth living. And anyone who needs to be reminded that Jesus Christ can meet us in places we thought were too dark, too painful, or too broken for anyone to reach. Serina’s story is not a story of pretending pain never happened. It is a story of bringing that pain into the light and continuing to walk toward Jesus one day at a time. Episode 57: Karen Ortiz: Abuse, Trafficking, Addition to Freedom in Christ

Some people talk about redemption as a church word. Karen Ortiz has lived the need for it. In this powerful episode of The Lions for Christ, Pastor Noel sits down with Karen Ortiz for a deeply personal conversation about abuse, human trafficking, addiction, survival, recovery, and the transforming grace of Jesus Christ. Karen’s story goes into places most people would rather not talk about. The pain of abuse. The reality of being trafficked. The grip of addiction. The shame and brokenness that can convince someone that the future has already been stolen from them. But Karen’s story didn’t end there. Through Jesus Christ, she found hope, freedom, healing, and a reason to keep moving forward. Her testimony is not about pretending the past never happened. It is about discovering that the past doesn’t get to decide what God can do with the rest of your life. Today, Karen is a mother of two, a grandmother, a professional dog groomer, an active member of her church, and a woman determined to turn pain into purpose. She is also developing Rahab’s Table, a mission with a unique heart: helping feed and foster dogs living on the streets of Cleveland, Texas, while also providing temporary foster care for the pets of people entering addiction recovery. Think about that for a minute. For someone finally willing to enter treatment, a beloved dog can become one more impossible decision: “Who is going to take care of my pet while I get help?” Karen wants Rahab’s Table to help remove that barrier. Karen has also shared her firsthand experience with organizations fighting human trafficking and helping survivors throughout the Houston area, including The Landing, Hands of Justice, and Twelve 11 Partners. The Landing serves survivors of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation through trauma-informed care grounded in the love of Christ. Hands of Justice is survivor-led and works through survivor support, education, career development, advocacy, and economic empowerment. Twelve 11 Partners is also survivor-led and works with people overcoming human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation as they move beyond survival and toward lasting freedom. This isn’t an episode about making Karen’s darkest moments the centerpiece of her identity. It’s about what Jesus did after the darkness. It’s for the survivor who wonders whether healing is possible. It’s for the person fighting addiction who believes they’ve gone too far. It’s for the family member trying to understand what someone they love has endured. And frankly, it’s for the Church, because ministry cannot stop at the church doors when people outside those doors are being exploited, abused, addicted, and discarded. Karen’s own words may say it best: “Without God there would have never been a future to testify about.” She has a future. And now she’s using it to help somebody else find theirs. Episode 56: The War Within Mental Health, Addiction, and the Road Back to Purpose with Dr. Bradley Berg

Mental illness and addiction don’t stay hidden forever. They bleed into marriages, families, careers, churches, and every relationship surrounding the person who is suffering. In this episode of The Lions for Christ, Pastor Noel sits down with Dr. Bradley Berg, founder of Encompassed Purpose, for a direct conversation about mental health, substance abuse, behavioral patterns, recovery, faith, and the difficult work of rebuilding a life. Dr. Berg brings decades of leadership experience in behavioral health and addiction recovery, along with an approach that combines evidence-based practices, cognitive restructuring, personal accountability, whole-person wellness, and Christian-centered support. His work challenges the idea that people can simply gather more information and somehow stumble into transformation. Real change requires action. It requires honesty. And it usually requires help. Pastor Noel and Dr. Berg discuss the destructive thinking patterns that can keep people trapped, why addiction is rarely solved by willpower alone, and how families can offer compassion without enabling continued destruction. They also confront the stigma surrounding mental-health treatment, especially inside churches where struggling people are sometimes told to “just pray harder” while serious emotional, behavioral, or substance-use problems continue tearing their lives apart. Prayer matters. Faith matters. Jesus changes lives. But asking for qualified help isn’t a rejection of faith. Sometimes it’s the first honest step of faith. This conversation explores the connection between the mind, body, spirit, environment, relationships, and daily decisions. It also examines the need for structure, accountability, healthier routines, recovery support, and a renewed sense of purpose. Encompassed Purpose currently offers services addressing mental health, substance-use recovery, co-occurring disorders, relapse prevention, behavioral addictions, counseling, coaching, sober living, family support, and other recovery needs. This episode is for the person fighting a private battle. It’s for the family that’s exhausted from watching someone they love self-destruct. It’s for the church leader who wants to respond with both truth and compassion. And it’s for anyone who wonders whether a life damaged by trauma, addiction, shame, or destructive choices can still be rebuilt. The answer is yes. Recovery isn’t easy. It isn’t instant. And it isn’t produced by empty promises or motivational slogans. But with truth, action, accountability, proper treatment, supportive relationships, and faith in Jesus Christ, another chapter can be written. Episode 55: The Fight of Faith: Mike Tarnow's Cancer Story and God's Healing Hand

When Mike Tarnow heard the word cancer, it wasn’t his first encounter with the disease. His father had battled lung cancer for years before passing away when Mike was only sixteen. Decades later, Mike would face his own diagnosis and discover just how deeply cancer reaches beyond the patient, affecting spouses, family members, friends, and everyone standing nearby trying to remain strong. In April, doctors found cancer in two of Mike’s lymph nodes. They also discovered three spots in his lungs that were presumed to be cancerous. What followed was a difficult season of medical appointments, treatment, surgeries, uncertainty, prayer, and learning to trust Jesus Christ when the outcome was beyond human control. Then Mike received incredible news. His latest CT scan showed that the cancer in his lymph nodes had shrunk until it was no longer detectable. In this episode of The Lions for Christ, Pastor Noel and Mike pause to celebrate that report and give glory to God for His healing hand, His mercy, and His faithfulness throughout the entire journey. Mike shares openly about the moment he received his diagnosis, the fears he faced, and how the battle affected his wife, family, and close friends. He discusses the people God placed around him, the strength he found through prayer, and how Jesus worked in his life during treatment, surgery, and recovery. This conversation isn’t built around pretending that cancer is easy. It isn’t. Cancer is brutal. It disrupts plans, tests relationships, exposes fear, and reminds us how little control we truly have. But Mike’s story also demonstrates that believers don’t walk through suffering alone. Jesus remains present in the examination room, the operating room, the waiting room, and the long nights when answers seem painfully slow. Mike’s testimony is a reminder that we should be thankful for skilled doctors, effective treatments, faithful caregivers, and medical technology while still recognizing God as the source of every blessing. Medicine and faith aren’t enemies. God can work through physicians, treatments, family members, and circumstances that we may not fully understand. Whether you’re fighting cancer, recovering from surgery, caring for someone who is sick, or waiting for medical results that could change your life, this episode will encourage you to keep praying, keep trusting, and keep your eyes fixed on Jesus Christ. A favorable medical report is worth celebrating. Absolutely. But our ultimate hope isn’t found in a scan, a diagnosis, or a doctor’s prediction. Our hope is found in Jesus Christ, who remains faithful in healing, suffering, life, and eternity.
