Analyzing American Revolution - AARevolution.net

Adel Aali, History Behind News Program

AARevolution.net is not your basic U.S. History 101! We are not about chronicling the American Revolution, storytelling or mythologizing. In Analyzing American Revolution (AAR), professors analyze the American Revolution from many different angles in in-depth interviews with host, Adel Aali. AAR is a production of History Behind News (HbN), in which Adel has interviewed 197 professors (and counting) about U.S. and world history. And now Adel brings that experience to interview and analyze scholars of the American Revolution.

The Continental Dollar: The Default That Built American Credit | S1E33 AAR

Did America default deliberately on the paper that financed its Revolution? The history most Americans learned blames the Continental dollar’s collapse on reckless printing and runaway inflation—but these notes functioned more like tax-backed bonds. Soldiers were paid in these promises and bore their plummeting value; then, in 1790, the new federal government settled the remaining dollars at 100 to 1, although it could have afforded a far more generous conversion. At that rate, holders converted only $6 million of the roughly $80 million still outstanding; the remaining $74 million was never redeemed, while the resulting default erased a massive liability, helped turn the new nation’s net worth positive, and strengthened American credit in Europe. 📄 Interview transcript & takeaways 🚩About My 228th Guest: Dr. Farley Grubb Dr. Farley Grubb is a professor of Economics and history at the University of Delaware, and a former research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Hessian POWs: Hold Them. Win Them Over. Weaken Britain.| S1E32 AAR

Hessian POWs became part of America’s war strategy. Rather than quickly exchange thousands of captured German soldiers and return them to Britain’s army, American leaders had a powerful reason to keep them out of the fighting. But they went further: Washington and other revolutionaries tried to win them over—placing prisoners among German-speaking Americans, treating them generously, and even offering land to men willing to abandon British service. It was an effort to turn captivity itself into a weapon against Britain. 📄 Interview transcript & takeaways 🚩About My 227th Guest: Dr. Daniel Krebs Dr. Daniel Krebs is an Associate Professor of Security Studies in the Department of National Security and Strategy at the U.S. Army War College, where he is the director of Advanced Regional Studies Program. Why Canada Refused to Join the American Revolution | S1E31 AAR

Canada refused the American Revolution. Continental Congress repeatedly invited Quebec to join the rebellion, then invaded Quebec expecting its French population to welcome American troops as liberators. The Habsburgs and the American Revolution: A Missing Chapter | S1E30 AAR

Although one of Europe's greatest powers is largely absent from the American story, it was anything but absent during the American Revolution. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and the Continental Congress sought to break Habsburg neutrality—or at least establish formal trade relations with the Habsburg monarchy. Yet the United States did not establish diplomatic relations with the Habsburgs until 1838. Why? Dr. Jonathan Singerton argues that Thomas Jefferson's delaying and deceptive diplomacy played a decisive role. 📄 Interview transcript & takeaways 🚩About My 225th Guest: Dr. Jonathan Singerton Dr. Jonathan Singerton is a professor for Global Political History at the Free University of Amsterdam (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), where he specializes in global approaches to Habsburg history in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Did the Treaty of Paris Create the United States? | S1E29 AAR

America's independence was not complete in 1776. The Declaration announced independence, but the United States still needed Britain—the empire it had rebelled against—to recognize it as a nation. It also needed to restore trade with the world's leading commercial power. In this interview, Dr. Eliga Gould explains why the 1783 Treaty of Paris was not just the end of the Revolutionary War, but one of America's founding documents. The treaty shaped America's borders, exposed early conflicts over slavery and Native Americans, and helped pave the way for a stronger national government. 📄 Interview transcript & takeaways 🚩About My 223rd Guest: Dr. Eliga Gould Dr. Eliga Gould is the Harmsworth Prof. of American History at the University of Oxford and a distinguished professor at the University of New Hampshire. Did the Declaration of Independence Actually Have Legal Authority? | S1E26 AAR

The Declaration of Independence almost had no legal authority. The delegates themselves weren't entirely sure what authority they possessed. Britain dismissed the Declaration as little more than a political pamphlet, while Congress substantially rewrote Jefferson's draft before approving it. So how did this document become the moral foundation of the United States? 📄 Interview transcript & takeaways 🚩About My 221st Guest: Dr. Edward Larson Dr. Edward Larson holds the Hugh and Hazel Darling Chair in Law and is University Professor of History at Pepperdine University. About
