Ep. 13. The Six Mentors Every Growing Leader Needs

Download a PDF Resource with the Six Mentors by signing up for the Cornerstone Coffee Break: https://www.cornerstoneleadership.org/cornerstone-coffee-break When I was 17, I realized something really important: I wasn't going to become the person I wanted to become by myself. I needed someone ahead of me. I needed a mentor. Bobby Clinton points out in his incredible book, Connecting, that one mentor isn't enough. Different mentors provide different resources. But what is mentoring anyway? I love Clinton's definition: "Mentoring is a relational experience in which one person empowers another by a transfer of resources." Your growth often stalls because either #1. You’re trying to do everything on your own. #2. you're looking for one person to provide what six different people were designed to give. Bobby Clinton identifies 6 types of mentoring relationships for you to pursue. #1. The Discipler -This mentor builds the foundation by passing on the tools for studying the Bible, learning to pray, and how to share your faith. #2. The Spiritual Director -A discipler teaches you the disciplines. A spiritual director helps you discern what God is doing through those disciplines. One teaches the practices. The other helps you interpret the journey. #3. The Teacher -This is the person who has knowledge you don't yet possess. One of my favorite phrases is, "I don't know what I don't know." #4. The Coach -If the teacher transfers knowledge...the coach develops skill. They do this through the cycle of Observation -> Evaluation -> Feedback -> Practice -> Repetition. #5. The Counselor -While a coach helps you improve your performance, a counselor helps you heal the wounds that may be limiting your performance. -Information alone doesn't heal wounds. #6. The Sponsor -A sponsor uses their influence to create opportunities you couldn't create on your own. They recommend you. They advocate for you. They introduce you. Which mentor do you need most right now? Don't try to find six mentors this week. Find one. The one you need most right now. Reach out. Buy them coffee. Ask thoughtful questions. Show up prepared. Take notes. Do the work.

Ep. 11. Tom Beaupre: Bass Player + Financial Advisor

Introducing...Tom Beaupre! Tommy and I were roommates at Bloomsburg University and we connected over our shared faith in God and love for music. The times we spent playing shows in college bars and coffee shops are some of my fondest memories. Tom worked hard to put himself out there in the music industry in Nashville, and got a great opportunity to play bass for Florida Georgia Line. He currently plays bass for Luke Bryan and is also providing wealth management as a financial advisor. We had a great conversation talking about faith, purpose, and leadership...here are some highlights! Chasing Purpose Through Music How a small college gig sparked Tom’s dream to pursue music professionally The early days of moving to Nashville with no guarantees Why grit mattered more than talent The mindset shift from “artist” to simply wanting to play music “I wasn’t the most talented but I was the most willing to stick it out.” Financial Stewardship & Responsibility The surprising story of Tom’s college budget written on a whiteboard Lessons learned from his mother about money and debt Why many musicians struggle financially even after finding success How music eventually led Tom into financial advising “People are handed tools they haven’t been taught how to wield yet.” Purpose, Identity & Calling How defining success changes your life The power of writing goals down Why people are often afraid to be beginners The connection between identity and habits “You are what you tell people you are.” Faith, Accountability & Spiritual Growth Growing up Catholic and navigating different expressions of faith Why accountability and authentic friendships matter Staying grounded in the music industry Learning not to place faith in human leaders “If your faith is in a building, a name, or a person… eventually someone’s going to let you down.” Leadership & Influence Leading from behind the scenes The importance of being solutions-driven instead of complaint-driven Why communication matters in leadership What it means to “lead yourself first” “Little things add up to big things.”
