EP.23: Coach Alvaro Rivadeneira | D1 Athletics Coach @ FGCU

Welcome back to The Mindsight Podcast! This week, we flip the script and look at the sport through the lens of a Division 1 coach. We are joined by Coach Alvaro Rivadeneira, the Interim Head Coach for the Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) cross country program. Coach Alvaro shares his unique journey from competing at the JUCO and NAIA levels to coaching in the NCAA. He breaks down FGCU's high-attention approach, utilizing a smaller roster size of 14 men and 12 women to provide personalized training and extensive athlete support systems, including sports psychologists and massage therapists. In this episode, we discuss: What Coach Alvaro specifically looks for in international and domestic recruits, focusing on professionalism, specific goals, and cultural fit. How the FGCU team uses the intense South Florida heat and humidity as an advantage to prepare for cooler championship races. The crucial resources, communities, and study halls that help international athletes transition to the US collegiate system without getting homesick. Coach Alvaro's training philosophy for the 10K, which involves maintaining year-round fitness and challenging all systems rather than relying solely on threshold work. The number one trait that separates standard runners from true D1 champions. Follow Coach Alvaro on Instagram at @coachalvaropr and keep up with the team at @fgcu_xc. In this episode, we cover: Ethan's unbelievable season and how he processed dropping his PB down to a 20.51. Why struggling during winter endurance training and taking tough losses became his biggest fuel for summer success. The technical shift: How fixing his stride pattern and angles turned his block start from his biggest weakness to a massive strength.
