    September is National Cold Case Month

    September Was Only the BeginningSeptember was not just a month on the calendar. It was a reminder. A reminder that behind every unresolved case is a person whose life mattered. A family that is still waiting. A community that deserves answers. Karen gives an overview of what September meant for Arizona—and, more importantly, what happens next. This year, Arizonans for Effective Public Safety received a proclamation from the Governor’s Office recognizing September 20–26 as Unresolved Cases Awareness Week in Arizona. That recognition matters. But a proclamation cannot be where the work ends. The work continues. Moving forward, we will continue raising awareness of Arizona’s unresolved cases, standing beside families who have spent years searching for answers, and advocating for renewed attention to investigations that remain unresolved. Families should not have to carry the weight of an unanswered case alone. Every name matters.Every family matters.Every unresolved case matters. September brought these cases into the conversation. Now Arizona must keep the conversation going—and keep working toward answers. We remember. We advocate. We keep going. {"fallbackMarkdown":"(Arizonans for Effective Public Safety)","reference":{"matched_text":"","prefix":null,"start_idx":1340,"end_idx":1372,"safe_urls":["https://azcapitoltimes.com/news/2026/09/24/families-advocates-call-for-more-help-to-solve-arizona-cold-cases/","https://azcapitoltimes.com/news/2026/09/24/families-advocates-call-for-more-help-to-solve-arizona-cold-cases/?utm_source=chatgpt.com","https://www.azforsafety.org/behind-the-numbers","https://www.azforsafety.org/behind-the-numbers?utm_source=chatgpt.com"],"refs":[],"alt":"(Arizonans for Effective Public Safety)","prompt_text":null,"type":"grouped_webpages","status":"done","style":null,"fallback_items":null,"items":[{"title":"Behind the Numbers — Arizonans for Effective Public Safety","url":"https://www.azforsafety.org/behind-the-numbers?utm_source=chatgpt.com","attribution":"Arizonans for Effective Public Safety","pub_date":null,"snippet":"","attribution_segments":null,"supporting_websites":[{"title":"Families, advocates call for more help to solve Arizona cold cases | Arizona Capitol Times Families, advocates call for more resources to solve cold cases","url":"https://azcapitoltimes.com/news/2026/09/24/families-advocates-call-for-more-help-to-solve-arizona-cold-cases/?utm_source=chatgpt.com","pub_date":null,"snippet":"","attribution":"Capitol Times"}],"refs":[{"turn_index":0,"ref_type":"search","ref_index":4},{"turn_index":0,"ref_type":"search","ref_index":8}],"hue":null,"attributions":null}],"error":null},"showLoginRequiredCard":false}

    Detrick Stanford

    Kristy is a wife who has spent the past several years living with the unimaginable loss of her husband, Detrick Stanford. She is also a woman determined to keep his memory alive, seek answers, and advocate for the family and others whose lives were forever changed by violence. I recently spoke with Kristy about what happened to her family and the lasting impact of losing Detrick. Her story is one of grief, perseverance, and the continued search for justice. On Sunday, December 13, 2020, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Tempe Police responded to 4130 S. Mill Avenue in Tempe, Arizona, following a report of shots fired. Officers found 48-year-old Detrick Stanford suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported for medical treatment but later succumbed to his injuries. No suspect information has been publicly announced, and the case remains unsolved. While Kristy and Detrick’s family continue to advocate for answers and justice, there is also an urgent need to support the remaining victims and families affected by this tragedy. For those who no longer feel safe where they live, relocation assistance can provide an opportunity to find safety, stability, and a fresh start. Kristy’s voice is a reminder that the impact of violent crime does not end when the headlines fade. Families and victims can continue to carry the emotional, financial, and personal consequences for years. Supporting the relocation fund is one way to stand with those who are still living with the aftermath and help provide them with the safety and stability they need.
