Talking Shoppe with Deming-Rivers Social Club

Deming-Rivers Social Club

The best ideas don’t happen in a high-pressure boardroom; they happen during the post-work exhale, over a scoop of ice cream, when you finally feel safe enough to say the truth. Welcome to Talking Shoppe, the official podcast of the Deming-Rivers Social Club (DRSC). We’re Dr. Essence and Dr. Emily—licensed psychologists, wives, and organizational culture consultants. It didn't take us long in the clinical world before we recognized that a lot of what gets labeled as an individual “mental health” problem is actually a systemic culture problem. You shouldn’t need a year of therapy just to recover from your 9-to-5. This is what happens when two psychologists stop talking shop and start Talking Shoppe. At DRSC, we believe psychological safety shouldn't be seen as the "cherry on top" for an organization. It’s the base layer that keeps the whole system from melting. In each episode, we’re moving the conversation from the therapist’s couch to the ice cream shoppe to deconstruct the "messy middle" of human services. We’re diving into the systemic cost of burnout, the identity work that actually matters, and the reality TV drama of office politics. We don’t do corporate filler or vague wellness talk. We provide grounded, unpolished, and sometimes slightly unhinged psychological insights for anyone holding up the community. Whether you’re a nonprofit executive facing the "Founder’s Trap," a manager stuck in the impossible middle, or just someone exhausted by being in survival mode, Talking Shoppe is your space to chill, chat, and finally exhale. Pull up a chair, grab a scoop, and let’s talk some shoppe!

Get to Know Essence and Emily

Get to Know Essence and Emily: Why We’re Starting This Podcast Essence and Emily, psychologist, wives, and organizational culture consultants behind Deming-Rivers Social Club, introduce their new podcast as a way to share the raw, unfiltered conversations that don’t fit in typical social media content. They describe their work split between therapy and consulting with nonprofits and human services organizations to build more sustainable, inclusive cultures and reduce burnout and turnover through practical, engaging, experiential training rather than overly simplistic wellness advice. They share their path from grad school through internship matching, their training at Palm Beach County Youth Services Department, and how a systemic focus shaped their approach and led them to identify gaps after moving to Sarasota. They outline podcast themes: organizational psychological safety, mental health, identity, current events, and reality TV—and close with a “weekly R.E.P.O.R.T” on what they’re reading, eating, playing, obsessing over, recommending, and treating themselves to. 00:00 Welcome to Talking Shoppe: Meet Essence and Emily 00:20 Why a Podcast 01:47 Who It’s For 02:55 Therapy Meets Culture 04:08 Grad School to Doctor 04:41 Internship Match Day 05:55 Palm Beach Training 07:03 Residential Program Life 07:52 Postdoc and Love Story 08:45 Systemic Lens Explained 10:24 Identity and Diversity 12:53 Burnout and Capacity Gap 14:15 Consulting Mission Values 15:00 Real Talk Trauma Care 16:16 Better Training Not Chair Yoga 17:21 Reality TV Style Workshops 18:04 Podcast Rough Draft Vibe 18:40 Where To Find Us 19:21 Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T 25:58 Wrap Up And Next Episodes
