Psalm 118 has been sung at Passover and major Jewish feasts for generations, and its central message is a declaration that God's love never runs out. The psalm opens and closes with the same command to give thanks, because gratitude is not our natural posture. Left to ourselves, we drift toward entitlement, and when we stop being thankful, we start replacing God with other sources of comfort and security. The Hebrew word behind the phrase steadfast love is chesed, a word that carries the weight of merciful kindness, loyal love, and covenant faithfulness. This love is not conditional, does not expire, and does not depend on how well you have performed or how many times you have failed. The psalmist writes from a place of genuine suffering, describing enemies surrounding him and circumstances that looked impossible. Yet he looks back and traces God's hand through all of it, declaring that God answered him and set him free. This is the nature of faith in hard seasons. You may not be able to see what God is doing in the moment, but you can trust His heart, and when you look back, you will see His fingerprints everywhere. God's discipline, the psalmist acknowledges, can be severe, but it is never without purpose. He is a loving Father who cares too much to let you build your life on something that will not hold. The most theologically significant verse in the psalm is verse 22, which Jesus quoted directly to the Pharisees in Matthew 21: the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. In ancient construction, the cornerstone was both the foundation everything rested on and the orientation point that determined the alignment of the entire structure. Jesus is that cornerstone. When He is not the foundation of your life, everything else will eventually show the cracks. The word hosanna, shouted by the crowds as Jesus rode into Jerusalem, comes directly from this psalm. It means simply, Oh God, save us. That cry is still the right prayer today, and it is never too late to build your life on Him.
