Ep. 10 I'll Turn Your Other Cheek

Episode 10 of the Equalized Outdoors Podcast is a catch-up from the field with MrJayCam: public-land hunting, gear that’s earning its keep, and a few things that need to be said about how we treat each other. In The Brief, we cover the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s response to the Fords Lake fish salvage controversy, Texas public-access developments, and upcoming drawn-hunt application deadlines. In The Situation Report, I share how my Texas public-land season is going while Virginia plans remain on hold. From heavy winds and ground hunting to scouting fresh sign and camping with my daughter, there’s been plenty to appreciate even without a deer on the ground. We also catch up on Equalized Outdoors apparel, the Hunter Spotlight Series, and plans for the North Texas Longbeards flock of Turkeys for Tomorrow. Then it’s Gear Talk: Vortex customer service comes through, and I explain how I became a “Sitka bro,” with thoughts on clothing, footwear, and fit after putting the gear to work in changing Texas temperatures. In Off the Streets, we address online disrespect, gatekeeping, and talking down to people for asking questions. Hunters should have room to learn, and seeing someone who looks or hunts differently isn’t a reason to treat them like they don’t belong. The Soundtrack closes things out with “Time Today” by Moneybagg Yo. EP 9 Whitetail Roundtable

This week on Episode 9 of the Equalized Outdoors Podcast, we’re talking whitetails with two hunters from our Hunter Spotlight series: Mike Cruz, The Pinoy Outdoorsman, and Micah Culbreth of George’s Boy Outdoors. We pull up for a campfire-style conversation about when scouting starts, finding places to hunt, reading terrain, and squeezing in sits around work and family. From New York hardwoods to the North Georgia mountains and Texas public land, we compare approaches, share early-season hunt stories, and talk through what we’re hoping to experience during the rut. We also get into the part that doesn’t always make it onto social media: missed opportunities, discouragement, and what coming home empty teaches you. Both Mike and Micah started hunting as adults, and their experiences bring a different perspective to learning the woods, finding mentors, and explaining hunting to people who don’t do it. 00:00 Cold Open 00:26 Episode introduction and sponsors 01:43 Meet Mike Cruz and Micah Culbreth 02:25 Archery practice, bow setups, and gear talk 07:53 Getting started as adult hunters 13:31 When whitetail scouting begins 18:09 Making time to hunt and working around pressure 21:37 Mike’s early-season saddle hunt 24:14 Micah’s opening-day doe 25:29 Hunting suburban hardwoods 26:37 Favorite terrain and dream deer hunts 29:11 E-scouting, onX, and building a waypoint system 35:49 What surprised us about whitetail hunting 40:28 Talking hunting and venison with nonhunters 45:40 Failure, persistence, and learning from each hunt 54:18 Safety, practice, and becoming a better hunter 56:45 Rut expectations and goals for the season 1:00:07 Where to follow our guests and closing remarks Equalized Outdoors On The Web Resources for Hunters Follow Mike @thepinoyoutdoorsman Follow Micah @GBoutdoors15 #deerhunting #hunting #whitetaildeer #bowhunting #bowtech #mathews #archery #deercamp

Episode 8 The Problem is What You See

Episode 8 of the Equalized Outdoors Podcast is another solo run with MrJayCam, covering the latest news, community work, and a problem the outdoor industry can no longer pretend not to see. In The Brief, we break down changes to the Major League Fishing format, the new live location-sharing feature in the onX Hunt app, and several wildlife and public-land updates—including the approaching comment deadline for the Roadless Rule. The Situation Report covers the first North Texas Longbeards event, Centershot Blue coming to Texas, the latest from the Equalized Outdoors Newsroom, and upcoming YouTube projects. MrJayCam also discusses volunteering at the State Fair of Texas, returning to Virginia for archery season, and why supporting conservation, veterans, and mental-health initiatives remains central to the work of Equalized Outdoors. Then, in Off the Streets, it is time to retire the notion that Black people do not hunt—or that Black hunters are newcomers chasing a trend. Representation is not the problem. The problem is what some people see when they look at it. Episode 2 Texas Turkey Featuring Jason Hardin of TPWD

On this episode of the Equalized Outdoors Podcast, Justin sits down with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Wild Turkey Program Leader Jason Hardin to discuss what’s really happening with wild turkey restoration across North Texas and what it could mean for future hunting opportunities near the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. The conversation covers corridor-based restoration along the Trinity River, the role of habitat management in long-term population recovery, and how emerging tools, such as Turkey Management Units, could eventually create limited hunting access in restored landscapes. They also address common misconceptions about stocking, the reality of hunting public land near DFW, and why predator management and prescribed fire remain critical to keeping birds on the landscape once restoration succeeds. Justin also breaks down current access challenges facing Metroplex hunters, discusses walk-in hunting models used in other states, and highlights how conservation partners like the National Wild Turkey Federation and Turkeys for Tomorrow are supporting restoration work across Texas. Also in this episode: The Brief: Idaho moves to restrict the use of certain electronics while hunting—and what that signals about where technology and ethics may be headed nationwide. Off the Streets: Not all money is good money—a look at why Equalized Outdoors is being intentional about partnerships and what that means going forward. The Bridge: A deeper conversation with TPWD on restoration strategy, access realities near the Metroplex, and what success could look like over time. Soundtrack: The music that’s been setting the tone lately. Whether you’re a turkey hunter in North Texas or just trying to understand how restoration decisions shape opportunity on the landscape, this episode breaks down what’s happening—and what to watch next. Whether you’re a longtime turkey hunter, a new turkey hunter, or just trying to understand why some North Texas counties remain closed, this episode provides a clear look at where things stand—and what may be coming next.
