Human Auctions: The Hidden Marketplace of Modern Slavery Ep:1

Let Me Know Your Thoughts and Question.  In this episode of The Secret World of Human Trafficking, host David J. Story investigates one of the darkest and least understood parts of modern human trafficking: the buying, selling, and transferring of human beings between criminal networks.  Human trafficking “auctions” rarely resemble the public slave markets portrayed in movies or history books. Modern trafficking operations are often far more secretive. Transactions can take place through encrypted communications, private criminal networks, hidden financial exchanges, and trusted contacts. Victims may be transferred between traffickers for money, debt, favors, transportation, forced labor, sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, or other forms of exploitation.  The episode examines how organized traffickers can treat victims as commodities—tracking earnings, expenses, movement, availability, risk, and profit. Victims may be moved when law enforcement gets too close, transferred to another criminal organization, or traded as part of a larger criminal operation. Each transfer can make victims more isolated and more difficult for families and investigators to locate.  Technology has also changed the trafficking landscape. Criminal organizations may use encrypted communications, disposable phones, false identities, cryptocurrency, social media, messaging applications, gaming platforms, and online advertisements. At the same time, digital forensics, financial intelligence, data analysis, and cyber investigations provide law enforcement with powerful tools for identifying criminal networks and gathering evidence.  A major theme of the episode is simple: follow the money. Traffickers may change names, phones, locations, and identities, but criminal profits can leave financial footprints. Investigators may examine suspicious deposits, money transfers, shell companies, cryptocurrency transactions, prepaid cards, luxury purchases, and international financial activity to uncover connections within trafficking organizations.  Most importantly, the episode brings the focus back to the victims. Traffickers frequently target vulnerability, using deception, false job opportunities, romantic relationships, financial hardship, isolation, or the need for acceptance before escalating their control. Recovery does not necessarily end with rescue. Survivors may need medical care, trauma-informed counseling, housing, education, employment assistance, legal services, and long-term community support.  The public also has a role. Learning the warning signs, talking openly with children about online relationships, supporting survivor organizations, and reporting suspected trafficking to appropriate authorities can help. No single warning sign proves trafficking, but awareness can help communities recognize situations that deserve professional investigation.  The central message is clear: human trafficking is organized, profitable, adaptable, and built around secrecy. Understanding how these criminal networks operate makes it harder for traffickers to remain hidden and gives communities, survivors, advocates, and investigators another tool in the fight against exploitation.  The Secret World of Human Trafficking is dedicated to educating the public, raising awareness, recognizing warning signs, and honoring survivors and those fighting human trafficking.  Support the show Go to DavidJStory.com for more information about the Host/Author and more episodes. Child Grooming & Human Trafficking: How Predators Target Children Online | Karin Freeland

Let Me Know Your Thoughts and Question.  In this episode of The Secret World of Human Trafficking, host David J. Story speaks with Karin Freeland-Aviles, Ministry Coordinator for Switch, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing sex trafficking, supporting survivors, and educating communities.  Karin explains how Switch works to prevent exploitation through school-based education, outreach to vulnerable women in strip clubs, and long-term restoration programs that connect survivors with counseling, legal assistance, job readiness, and other critical services. She emphasizes that recovery is a long journey requiring patience, compassion, and community support.  The conversation challenges many common misconceptions about human trafficking. Rather than stranger abductions, most victims are groomed by someone they know, trust, or love. Traffickers exploit emotional needs, family relationships, poverty, loneliness, and other vulnerabilities to manipulate victims into exploitation.  David and Karin discuss how traffickers increasingly use social media, gaming platforms, messaging apps, and artificial intelligence to target children and teenagers. They explain how AI-generated images are fueling sextortion schemes, allowing criminals to create fake explicit images and use them for blackmail. Karin shares the tragic story behind Gavin's Law, illustrating the devastating consequences of online sextortion and the importance of open communication between parents and children.  Parents receive practical guidance on protecting their children, including monitoring online activity, limiting phone use at night, teaching healthy relationships, recognizing grooming behaviors, using proper anatomical terms, creating family safety plans, and maintaining judgment-free conversations so children feel safe asking for help.  The discussion also examines the relationship between pornography, exploitation, and trafficking. Karin explains how pornography can normalize abuse, fuel demand for commercial sexual exploitation, and contribute to addiction, while emphasizing that recovery and healing are possible.  Another important focus is the reality that trafficking affects males as well as females. The speakers discuss why male victimization remains significantly underreported due to stigma, shame, and cultural misconceptions.  Throughout the interview, David and Karin encourage listeners to become part of the solution by educating themselves, supporting reputable anti-trafficking organizations, advocating for stronger laws, reporting suspicious activity to law enforcement, reducing the demand that fuels trafficking, and sharing reliable resources within their communities.  Karin also shares her personal journey from a successful corporate career to nonprofit ministry, discusses her book, Grab Life by the Dreams, and explains how discovering her purpose led her to serve survivors of trafficking.  This episode offers practical prevention strategies, valuable online safety advice, insight into the realities of trafficking, and hope that informed communities working together can protect vulnerable individuals and help survivors rebuild their lives.  www.KarenFreeland.com/dreams  switchsc.org www.takeitdown.ncmec.org Support the show Go to DavidJStory.com for more information about the Host/Author and more episodes. Human Trafficking Survivor: 20 Years of Exploitation to Freedom | Tina Dixon

Let Me Know Your Thoughts and Question.  In this episode of The Secret World of Human Trafficking, host David J. Story interviews Tina Dixon, a survivor of human trafficking and founder of Queens Arise, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping survivors build successful professional careers through education, mentorship, and employment opportunities.  Tina shares her remarkable journey from surviving over twenty years of exploitation to becoming a successful entrepreneur and advocate for other survivors. She explains that many survivors struggle after leaving trafficking because they lack education, job skills, and financial stability. Through Queens Arise, she provides scholarships, career training, mentoring, and job placement so survivors can achieve financial independence and avoid returning to exploitation.  One of the unique aspects of Tina's story is that while she was being trafficked, she was forced to learn digital marketing to promote escort services online. After escaping trafficking and entering recovery, she transformed those same skills into a legitimate career, eventually founding a successful marketing agency. She now uses that experience to teach survivors marketable skills that lead to well-paying careers.  Tina recounts the traumatic events that led to her exploitation. Growing up in a dysfunctional household, she ran away from home as a young teenager and was quickly recruited into commercial sexual exploitation. She describes years of being controlled by traffickers connected to organized crime, forced to work in brothels across the southern United States, physically abused, and denied any of the money she earned. She also discusses decades of addiction, homelessness, repeated victimization, and the lasting emotional trauma that kept pulling her back into exploitation.  Her turning point came after entering a long-term recovery program that focused on trauma treatment rather than simply addiction recovery. Through counseling, faith, and determination, Tina rebuilt her life, maintained long-term sobriety, purchased homes, developed a successful career, and dedicated herself to helping other survivors rebuild theirs.  David and Tina emphasize that rescue alone is not enough. Survivors need long-term support that includes education, meaningful employment, financial empowerment, and ongoing mentorship. Tina explains that many survivors return to exploitation simply because minimum-wage jobs cannot provide the financial stability they need. Queens Arise addresses this gap by preparing survivors for professional careers capable of supporting themselves and their families.  The conversation also highlights several success stories, including graduates who have secured professional positions earning competitive salaries and regaining custody of their children. Tina believes financial independence is one of the strongest tools available to prevent re-exploitation.  Toward the end of the interview, Tina discusses her upcoming memoir, Going to the Country, which chronicles her experiences in trafficking, addiction, recovery, and redemption. She explains that the title reflects the phrase traffickers used when transporting her to remote brothels throughout Louisiana and neighboring states. The memoir aims not only to expose trafficking but also to provide hope to survivors who believe it is too late to rebuild their lives.  David concludes the interview by praising Tina's work and encouraging listeners to support Queens Arise through donations and scholarships. He reminds listeners to visit his website to learn more about his podcast, books, and educational efforts to combat human trafficking.  Key Takeaways  Tina Dixon survived more than two decades of human trafficking before escaping and rebuilding her life. She founded Queens Arise, (QUEESDM.ORG) to provide survivors with education, career training, mentorship, and employment opportunities.Financial empowerment is critical in preventing survivors from returning to exploitation.Trauma-informed care, long-term support, and meaningful employment are essential components of survivor recovery.Tina transformed skills she learned while being exploited into a successful marketing career and now teaches those same skills to other survivors. Her memoir, Going to the Country, shares her journey from exploitation to recovery and offers hope to others facing similar struggles. Human Trafficking in the UK: Grooming, Forced Labor & Child Exploitation | Hannah Ashwell

Let Me Know Your Thoughts and Question.   Episode Summary: Human Trafficking in the UK and Beyond with Hannah Ashwell In this episode of The Secret World of Human Trafficking, host David J. Story interviews Hannah Ashwell, a UK-based therapist, PhD researcher in occupational trauma, and author of the upcoming book Quit Porn. Their discussion explores the realities of human trafficking in the United Kingdom, the growing influence of technology on exploitation, and the urgent need for public awareness and survivor support.  Hannah explains that human trafficking in the UK is far more widespread than most people realize. She discusses the UK's National Referral Mechanism, which recorded over 19,000 suspected trafficking referrals in 2020, while emphasizing that many more victims remain hidden. Victims include both UK nationals and people trafficked from other countries, with children making up a significant percentage of identified victims. She notes that trafficking extends far beyond sexual exploitation to include forced labor, domestic servitude, agricultural work, nail salons, car washes, and other industries where organized crime can conceal victims.  David and Hannah discuss how traffickers continuously adapt their methods, moving victims between locations to avoid detection and exploiting demand for cheap labor and commercial sex. They stress that reducing demand, increasing law enforcement resources, and improving public awareness are essential to disrupting trafficking networks. Both agree that rescuing victims is only the beginning of recovery, as survivors often require long-term psychological care, vocational training, and specialized support to rebuild their lives.  The conversation also examines how traffickers use grooming, deception, threats, debt bondage, and family intimidation to maintain control over victims. Hannah explains that many victims willingly travel with traffickers after being promised legitimate jobs, only to have their documents confiscated and freedoms taken away upon arrival. This manipulation makes trafficking difficult to recognize because it often occurs "in plain sight."  A significant portion of the interview focuses on technology and online exploitation. Hannah discusses proposed UK restrictions on social media use for children under sixteen and questions whether age-verification systems alone will be effective. David and Hannah warn that predators increasingly target children through social media, gaming platforms, and messaging applications rather than through traditional abduction methods. They discuss concerns surrounding platforms such as Roblox and Discord, the use of artificial intelligence to create exploitative imagery, livestreamed abuse, and the growing sophistication of online grooming tactics, including the use of automated bots.  David also raises concerns about extremist online groups that manipulate vulnerable young people into self-harm and criminal behavior, illustrating how digital communities can normalize abuse and exploitation. Hannah compares these communities to other harmful online networks that encourage destructive behaviors through peer validation and financial incentives.  The episode concludes with Hannah discussing her forthcoming book, Quit Porn, which examines pornography, unhealthy sexual behaviors, online exploitation, and the connections between the pornography industry and human trafficking. She explains that one chapter, titled Set the Captives Free, specifically explores trafficking in both the UK and worldwide while providing readers with resources for prevention and recovery.  David closes by reinforcing the mission of the podcast: educating the public, increasing awareness, encouraging people to recognize warning signs, support anti-trafficking organizations, and report suspicious activity. Both guests emphasize that while human trafficking may never be completely eliminated, informed communities can make it significantly more difficult for traffickers to operate and can help save lives.   Support the show Go to DavidJStory.com for more information about the Host/Author and more episodes. Former CIA Operative Explains How Human Traffickers Find Children Online | Nick McKinley

Let Me Know Your Thoughts and Question. In this episode of The Secret World of Human Trafficking, host David J. Story interviews former CIA operative and pararescuer Nick McKinley, founder of DeliverFund, a nonprofit that provides intelligence and data to thousands of law enforcement officers fighting human trafficking across the United States. McKinley explains that modern human trafficking is largely driven through the internet, where predators use social media, gaming platforms, and other online applications to identify and groom vulnerable children. He emphasizes that trafficking is rarely the result of stranger abductions and is more often facilitated through online manipulation and exploitation. The discussion covers:  How DeliverFund uses data analysis and AI to identify traffickers and support law enforcement investigations.  The dangers children face online through social media, gaming platforms, and messaging apps.  Common misconceptions about human trafficking, including myths about stranger kidnappings and trafficking economics.  The overlap between pornography, commercial sexual exploitation, and trafficking.  The importance of parental involvement and limiting unsupervised internet access.  The role of technology companies, government policy, and public awareness in combating trafficking. McKinley stresses that trafficking is a large-scale problem requiring intelligence-driven solutions, stronger protections for children online, and greater public engagement to identify and stop traffickers.
