    🎙️Equinox 24 Full Review – Bite size episode 6

In this bite-sized episode of Smarter Than Yesterday, we're taking you inside Equinox 24 — the 24-hour endurance race at the stunning Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire. From pre-race nerves and van "Chalky" rocking up with fresh SPC decals, to 3am low points, a chafing SOS mission, and a full SPC crew keeping Darren moving lap after lap — this is the full, honest debrief. Twelve months on from foot surgery, Darren set out to hit 100 miles on a brutal 6.2-mile loop featuring the aptly-named "Not That Hill." What followed was 24 hours of grit, a fuelling strategy that didn't quite go to plan, a scary paracetamol mix-up, daughter Lily bagging a 3rd-place podium in the kids' race, and a sunrise that changed everything. In this episode: - Race morning nerves and Darren's pre-race routine - The story behind Darren's foot surgery and how far he's come in 12 months - A full breakdown of the Equinox 24 course, including "Not That Hill" - Fuelling on the go: torque carbs, eating what you fancy, and hitting 90g of carbs an hour - The midnight chafing crisis and the SOS run to HQ - A 3am scare with sore feet, drowsiness, and an accidental paracetamol mix-up - Evan's last-minute FOMO entry into the 6-hour race (and the sickness that followed) - The sunrise lap and the crew-powered second wind - Final result: 14 laps, 85 miles, 27th overall — and why the crew made all the difference - Lessons learned for next year, and the plan to go even further in 2027 If you've ever wondered what really goes on behind the scenes of a 24-hour endurance race — the highs, the lows, the 3am decision-making, and why a good crew is worth more than any gel — this one's for you. 👉 Got a story of your own to share on the podcast? 🎙️ Episode 17 STRONGMAN & PHYSICAL FOUNDATION with Harvey Robinson

This week Darren and Alex sit down with Harvey Robinson, a full-time dairy and sheep farmer, competitive powerlifter since 2012, and the reigning Hereford's Strongest Man. Harvey takes us from milking cows at 6am to squatting 360kg, benching 230kg (a British raw bench press record, won at the Arnold Classic) and deadlifting 385kg, all while running the farm and raising a family. He explains the "training pyramid" that underpins everything he does: general conditioning at the base, bodybuilding-style hypertrophy in the middle, and sport-specific max lifts right at the top, done sparingly. We get into how concurrent training (built on Zatsiorsky's Science and Practice of Strength Training) rebuilt his knees after years of pain, how a 12-hour farming day still makes room for training, and why he's now building his own powerlifting club in Monmouthshire. This is a genuinely fascinating look at what it takes to build serious strength around a demanding, physical, real life, no fluff, no shortcuts, just structure and consistency. In this episode we cover: How a farmer from Bedfordshire became "adopted" by Hereford and won Hereford's Strongest Man with almost no event-specific trainingHarvey's journey from national-level competitive swimmer to 37-competition powerlifterThe training pyramid: general prep, bodybuilding, then sport-specific lifting, and why time spent should match that shapeConcurrent training and the book that changed everything: Zatsiorsky's Science and Practice of Strength TrainingOvercoming years of knee pain without surgery, and rebuilding to a 360kg squatA day in Harvey's life: milking cows, GPP training, farm work, and heavy lifting in the eveningPlans to open his own powerlifting club in MonmouthshireCoaching, post-workout nutrition, and his advice for anyone starting strength training from zero🎧 Listen. 🎙️Preparing for Equinox 24– Bite size episode 5

🎙️ Preparing for Equinox 24 – Bite Size Episode 5 24 hours. 10K laps. One castle. And potentially A LOT of Pot Noodles. 😂 In this episode of the SPC Podcast, Alex sits down with Darren as he prepares for Equinox 24 — a 24-hour endurance race around the grounds of Belvoir Castle. But this isn't just a chat about running 24 hours. Darren is heading into Equinox almost exactly 12 months after undergoing major surgery on his foot. We talk about the road back, learning to run again, the mental battle of losing something that had become such a huge part of his life, and the training he's put in to get himself back to the start line. We also get into race strategy, walking the hills, fuelling, kit, pit stops, sleep, the importance of keeping moving… and Darren's rather ambitious target of 100 miles — or maybe even 110! 👀 There’s plenty of serious endurance chat, but also plenty of the usual SPC nonsense along the way. 😂 If you're interested in ultra running, endurance events, comeback stories, mindset or just fancy hearing two runners talk absolute rubbish for 25 minutes… this one's for you. 👇 In this episode: 00:00 – Welcome back & what is Equinox 24?  01:48 – The psychological battle of those hills  03:27 – Darren's foot operation & the road back  05:28 – Learning to run again  07:08 – Injury, pain & knowing when to push  09:50 – Being miles from yourself  13:17 – How Equinox 24 came about  15:21 – Is endurance 90% mental?  16:21 – Fuelling, kit & the ultimate Pringle carrier  19:33 – Race weekend, goals & the 100-mile target 🎧 Listen.
