Why Is Finding Senior Care So Confusing? With Greg Sarlo

What if the one thing missing in senior care is not another list of phone numbers, but a person you can trust to connect the dots? On this episode of Mastering Aging Gracefully, host Brittany Singleton welcomes Greg Sarlo, founder and CEO of EverCare Senior Placement and founder and executive director of Senior Connection Arizona, for a conversation about trust, community and the idea he believes could change how families find help. Brittany says meeting Greg felt like a rare, instant connection, and that spark carries through the whole interview. Greg explains that Senior Connection was an idea in 2023 and officially launched in 2024, after he saw how fragmented senior resources can be. Great resources exist in the community, he says, but they often sit in silos, and families are left not knowing who to call or who to trust. His shorthand is an Angie's list for seniors, and Brittany agrees the industry could use one. Greg shares his vision for something bigger than a database or a website. He talks about a concierge style resource, a gold standard for vetting professionals, and a community where older adults, care partners and professionals come together. He describes the Facebook community as the foundation for what is being built and says the community itself will help shape what comes next. He is candid that the goals are bigger than where things stand today. He talks about a network of trusted professionals, a board of advisors, a vetting process for professionals and the possibility of nonprofit status down the road, and he teases that more is coming in the next couple of months. Brittany and Greg also talk about why they care. Both say difficult experiences in the industry pushed them to want better. Greg says he does not get mad, he gets motivated, and that his core belief is collaboration over competition. He says it is about doing what you say you will do and treating people the way you want to be treated, and that a title alone does not make someone a quality fit. He also recalls a friend who flew in to poke holes in the idea and warned him it would cost more money and take more time than he expected. That is why he wants to do it right. You will also hear why he did not want it to be pay to play, the late night hospital discharge moment he imagines for a family, and an invitation to watch for events, panels and health fairs. About the Guest Greg Sarlo is the founder and CEO of EverCare Senior Placement and the founder and executive director of Senior Connection Arizona. His work centers on helping older adults and their families navigate some of the most complicated and emotional decisions of aging with greater clarity, connection and support. A Certified Dementia Practitioner, Greg has built his career around advocacy and helping people make confident decisions when the stakes are high. His path runs from early experience at Intel, to supporting families in the financial industry, to consultative work, sales leadership and business development, and it led him into the senior care space. The mission became personal when he stepped in to advocate for members of his own family. His goal is to make it easier for families to find trustworthy guidance before a crisis forces the conversation. Selling Your Aging Parent's Home? Know Your Options With Andres Vargas

What happens to the family home when mom or dad can no longer stay in it? For so many families, that question arrives in the middle of a crisis, and the wrong answer can cost far more than money. On this episode of Mastering Aging Gracefully, host Brittany Singleton sits down with Andres Vargas, a real estate advisor, Certified Senior Pro, and the founder of Trust Point Property Solutions, for a conversation no family going through a senior transition should miss. Andres does not describe himself as a typical realtor. He calls what he does real estate advising, and the difference matters. His path into the senior space started before he ever held a license. He watched his grandmother nearly get taken advantage of in a real estate deal, and saw a family member misled when selling an inherited home. Then he heard investors bragging about putting an older woman's home under contract far below its value. Something clicked. Seniors and their families needed someone on their side. When a senior is downsizing or moving to assisted living or memory care, Andres starts with questions, not paperwork. What needs to happen with the home? What is the family facing? Sometimes a traditional listing is right. Sometimes not, and he says so. He walks through the options he brings, from his network of cash buyers for families who need speed and simplicity, to partnering with his wife on repairs before a sale, to solutions for those who owe close to what the home is worth. And sometimes the best advice is not to sell at all, and he shares the moment he tells families exactly that. Brittany also asks the questions families whisper about. What about those we buy houses signs? Andres shares what he has seen, including a contract tactic he says can leave a seller stuck months later, and why it pays to have someone who knows contracts on your side. What happens when siblings disagree about mom's house? He talks through how families navigate those decisions, when a mediator might help, and his reminder about who the conversation is really for. His first step for any family in crisis might surprise you. Slow down, breathe, and get the information on the table. He says his consultations are always free, even for families a year before a decision, and if he is not the right fit, he will point you to someone who is, including families moving a parent to Arizona from out of state. About the Guest Andres Vargas is a real estate advisor and the founder of Trust Point Property Solutions, where he helps people navigate important real estate and life transitions with confidence. He works with clients who want to understand their options, make informed decisions, and accomplish their goals. Trust Point Property Solutions is not about getting listings, making commissions, or pushing for sales. It is about listening to clients, offering honest guidance, and creating solutions that fit their unique circumstances, goals, and financial needs. Whether that means buying or selling a home traditionally, exploring creative property solutions, or connecting clients with trusted resources, Andres is committed to helping people move forward with less stress and greater peace of mind. Left Corporate Life for Senior Care That Felt Like Family | Ashley Holmberg

Would you trust this person to care for your own mom or dad? Before choosing senior care, that question deserves an honest answer. In this heartfelt episode of Mastering Aging Gracefully, Brittany Singleton welcomes Ashley Holmberg of Modern Care Homes for a conversation about trust, friendship, faith and the people behind compassionate care. What began as a carefully built business partnership became a friendship that would touch Ashley's own family. Ashley shares how she found her way into senior care while working long hours in corporate sales and marketing. After work, she would bring her husband, Paul, dinner at the care home and help where she could while he cared for residents. Those few hours gave her a sense of purpose she wasn't finding in her corporate career. In 2017, she made the leap, leaving that world to become more involved in Modern Care Homes through design, construction support and marketing. Brittany and Ashley explore why choosing the right partners takes more than liking someone. In senior care, the people you invite into a home affect residents, families and caregivers. Their conversation asks what a referral should really mean: choosing someone you would trust with a person you love, rather than making a connection for financial gain. They also share what happens when the Living Gracefully team walks through the doors of Modern Care Homes. New faces, movement, activities and genuine excitement offer residents another connection. For someone who has few visitors, those moments can mean being noticed, included and treated as the adult they have always been. Brittany explains how those relationships complement the demanding, deeply personal work caregivers do every day. The conversation becomes especially tender when Ashley remembers her dad and the care Brittany provided. Together, they recall his humor, determination and the joy he brought to their time together. A therapy ball became a reason to laugh. A moment of working on balance became a big bear hug. For Ashley, being there to see her dad smile and share those experiences left memories she will always cherish. Her dad was an aeronautical engineer who had worked at NASA's Ames Research Center. Ashley remembers how former colleagues sent wind tunnel books he could read and explain, offering a connection to the work he loved. Faith is woven throughout this conversation, from encouraging a friend during a difficult day to building organizations around service rather than personal recognition. Ashley and Brittany reflect on responding to negativity with kindness, staying grounded in their purpose and surrounding seniors and their families with love. Whether you are supporting an aging parent, working in senior care or looking for people you can trust, this episode offers a deeply personal look at care built on connection. Watch the full conversation, share it with someone facing a care decision, and subscribe to Mastering Aging Gracefully on YouTube for more expert conversations and heartfelt stories about aging with intention, compassion and connection. About the guest Ashley Holmberg is Creative & Growth Director at Modern Care Homes in Phoenix, Arizona. She helped grow the organization from one residential assisted living home to more than 30 locations serving over 300 residents across the Phoenix metropolitan area. With more than 20 years in sales and marketing, she leads residential design, brand strategy and marketing, and consults with new and growing assisted living operators. Best Lessons on Aging Can Happen Around a Breakfast Table Away From Home

What does aging gracefully look like? It can look like ten people around a breakfast table in Salzburg, Austria, passing eggs, pastries and stories across a language barrier. On this episode of Mastering Aging Gracefully, host Brittany Singleton sits down with her longtime friend Kari Kearney for a conversation about purpose, connection and the people who show us how to live well at any age. Kari is the fitness specialist who helped Brittany launch Living Gracefully, the senior fitness program that brings classes into residential care homes. They go back to the dinner before a children's volleyball game where Brittany shared a dream she felt called to pursue. Kari holds an exercise science degree from ASU, taught elementary education for a few years, then stayed home with her children for twenty years. As her kids headed toward college, she was ready for a purposeful next chapter, and Living Gracefully offered one. The model sought qualified degree holders returning to work who wanted to contribute meaningfully and be paid fairly. The first ten recruits were volleyball moms from their own circle. You will hear how the idea began with friends asking about their parents' knee and back problems, how Kari helped build the classes, practiced with their own mothers and chose the music, and how the very first class in a residential care home ended with their first paper check. Three years later, Kari still teaches seven classes a week and shares why the relationships with residents and families have been more rewarding than expected, including loving and losing people along the way. They also talk about why consistent instructors matter to care homes and how the program has grown while holding on to its original mission. Then the conversation takes a turn that makes this episode special. Brittany and Kari, whose daughters are best friends, recall a two and a half week trip celebrating those daughters' high school graduation. Six young women traveled through Italy, Austria and Germany, shared rooms, and came home closer. In Salzburg, the group stayed with the grandparents of one of the girls, Elfie and Rudolph. Mornings meant breakfast together with fresh breads, pastries, eggs, coffee, hugs and plenty of conversation. Elfie and Rudolph's son Thomas helped translate, and no one needed perfect words to feel welcome. The stories from that home are truly the heart of this episode. A Sunday beer garden table that has gathered friends for at least 35 years. An evening of wine, laughter and music, with Johnny Cash and maybe Elvis, as the young women walked in wearing colorful rain ponchos just to spend time with their hosts. A grandmother cheering on every girl. A funny garlic story from Italy. And two role models in Elfie and Rudolph, who stayed active every day, from morning exercise to a confident swim across the lake and back. Kari and Brittany reflect on the tearful goodbye, the promise to return, and what they learned about aging by seeing it through the lens of their work with seniors. The common thread was purpose, whether big or small, along with family, meaningful relationships, breaking bread together and feeling loved. It is a warm reminder that aging well is about who sits at your table. About the guest Kari Kearney is a Fitness Specialist who graduated with a degree in exercise science from ASU. She has been the foundation of the Living Gracefully fitness program. She enjoys working with people of all ages and feels passionate about encouraging them to live their best life. Kari and her husband live in North Phoenix with their three children. Enjoyed this conversation? What Makes an Assisted Living Home Feel Like Home?

On this episode of Mastering Aging Gracefully, host Brittany Singleton welcomes Hector and Omar Rivera of Royal Destiny Assisted Living & Memory Care. Only 60 days after opening, the couple reflect on a fast start and why residents deserve more than a list of services. For them, daily care matters, but so do connection, purpose and the feeling of being seen. Hector describes their approach as a “frequency of love.” He wants residents to do more than exist in a home. He wants to learn what matters to each person, including the dreams and interests they may think are behind them. Then he and the care team look for ways to bring that sense of accomplishment into everyday life. His background in hypnosis shapes the questions he asks about emotional health, though he is clear that Royal Destiny is an assisted living home. He talks about caring for the soul as well as supporting day to day needs. Brittany and Hector discuss a resident who had been bedbound and began transferring between her bed and chair after working with Brittany's Living Gracefully team. Brittany remembers showing Hector and a caregiver how to assist with the transfer, then seeing them watch closely, ask questions and consider the next steps. It shows a partnership focused on the resident. Hector also shares encouraging changes he says he has seen among other residents in the home's first two months. These are personal accounts, not promises about anyone else's care or recovery. The conversation widens from one home to the senior care community around it. Omar is candid about how hard it was to get practical information when they were starting out. Friends Anna and David first introduced him to assisted living and welcomed him into their homes, but he also encountered people reluctant to share what they knew. Now, he says, other owners and professionals are beginning to visit Royal Destiny and ask how the couple works. Hector hopes the kindness they have felt from generous mentors can move through the whole industry instead of staying inside one building. Their story began long before Royal Destiny opened. Hector and Omar fostered children and adopted their three boys. Omar remembers the nighttime care, the sick days and the everyday work of making a family. Hector sees a connection between creating a safe, loving home for children and opening one for older adults. He had spent 22 years in banking, eventually becoming an executive in Scottsdale, before leaving his corporate career. He first worked in senior placement to visit homes, listen to owners and learn what families and residents might need. That experience helped shape the kind of home he and Omar wanted to build. What does it mean to age gracefully when care is personal? This episode asks us to look past the building and the checklist, toward the people, relationships and possibilities inside. If you are considering assisted living for someone you love, or you work in senior care, listen for the questions Hector and Omar ask about purpose, partnership and what makes a home feel like home. About the guests Hector and Omar Rivera are the founders of Royal Destiny Assisted Living & Memory Care. Hector spent 12 years as a foster and adoptive parent, and he and Omar are parents to three boys. Hector brings 22 years of experience in banking, with awards and recognition spanning 2004 to 2025, and is a Level 2 QHHT Practitioner. His honors include Pinnacle and Valiant awards. He left his corporate career to focus on care and connection at Royal Destiny. Omar brings his experience as a foster and adoptive parent and shares what it took to enter the assisted living community and learn from other owners. Their approach centers on making residents feel known, supported and connected to purpose. Follow Mastering Aging Gracefully and share this episode with someone navigating care for a loved one. From World Class Gymnastics to Senior Fitness

What happens when a coach who has spent more than 40 years helping athletes discover what their bodies can do brings that same belief, joy, and fire into senior living communities? In this episode of Mastering Aging Gracefully, host Brittany Singleton sits down with Wendi Fiarkoski, whose energy has shaped lives across generations. Wendi traces her love of movement back to growing up in Omaha, Nebraska, where she was the energetic eight year old who loved climbing, jumping, and being upside down. She began coaching gymnastics in 1986 and went on to work with everyone from young beginners to world class athletes. After moving to Arizona, she continued coaching before turning decades of experience into Fiar It Up, a consulting business with a larger purpose of inspiring and encouraging others. That purpose found a powerful new expression when Wendi joined Living Gracefully as a fitness specialist. She explains how her experience coaching high level athletes prepared her to serve seniors with the same belief in their potential. The pace may change, but the mission does not. Wendi sees the residents in her classes as athletes and adapts every program to the culture, abilities, and needs of each community. Her stories reveal what individualized care looks like in motion. One group loves tossing balls back and forth. Another lights up when class ends with song requests, movement, and dancing. She wants every resident to feel known, included, challenged, and celebrated. Brittany and Wendi also talk about the natural energy they bring into a room and the importance of refusing to become smaller simply because someone thinks they are too much. For Wendi, that fire is not a performance. It is part of who she is, how she coaches, and how she connects with people. Her faith and love for seniors guide the way she serves. This conversation is a joyful reminder that meaningful movement is about more than exercise. It can build confidence, spark laughter, and help people feel fully alive at every age. Listen for an uplifting look at how great coaching begins with meeting people where they are and believing there is always more life to celebrate. Her story shows how skill, joy, faith, and connection can transform a class into something meaningful. About the guest Wendi Fiarkoski is the founder of Fiar It Up, a gymnastics consultant, and a fitness specialist with Living Gracefully. She has coached gymnastics since 1986 and brings more than 40 years of experience working with people across ages and ability levels. Her work is so centered on movement, faith, encouragement, and helping others discover their strength. What Every Family Should Know Before Choosing Assisted Living

Guest: Jennifer "Jenn" Wassermann, Attorney, Davis-Miles Law Offices In this episode, we sit down with Jenn Wassermann, an attorney whose practice focuses on representing regulated businesses and licensed healthcare professionals before the Arizona Office of Administrative Hearings, professional licensing boards, and state and federal courts. Her path into senior care started long before law school: she grew up in a high-rise for the elderly where her mother was the resident manager, giving her hundreds of "grandparents" from sixth grade through college. After moving to Arizona, Jenn and her husband invested in and operated two licensed assisted living homes for about six years. Both became certified caregivers, and Jenn is an NCIA-certified assisted living manager and licensed Arizona real estate agent. Navigating COVID-era regulations as hands-on owners - while her legal work shifted toward healthcare and regulatory law - eventually led them to sell the homes so she could serve operators statewide. That owner experience is exactly why her clients trust her today. In this conversation, we cover: - Arizona assisted living basics: homes are licensed for up to 10 beds, communities for 11 or more, all regulated by the Department of Health Services - Paying for care: Medicare does not cover assisted living. ALTCS (Arizona's Medicaid program) can help those who qualify, but not every home accepts it - SB 1473: Jenn helped draft this new law, signed by the governor, that protects the right of residential assisted living homes to operate statewide - stopping individual municipalities from capping occupancy below the state's 10-bed license, a cap that would hurt both operators and residents socially - Keeping couples together: a brand-new statute, already in effect, lets a spouse or loved one move into assisted living with someone who needs care even if they don't qualify for services themselves - no medical record or ADL requirement for the "healthy spouse" - Arizona's three levels of care: supervisory, personal, and directed (which can include memory care), plus what ADLs (activities of daily living) actually mean - Last year's memory care regulations: dementia training and elopement drills - Vetting who enters the home: DPS fingerprint clearance cards, the newer APS (Adult Protective Services) registry check for employees, and the gray area around fingerprinting contractors - Why peer interaction in smaller home settings matters for residents' quality of life Beyond her practice, Jenn serves on the Board of Directors of the Arizona Assisted Living Homes Association (advisory member), is an officer of the Arizona Behavioral Health Providers Association, and is a member of the Arizona Society of Healthcare Attorneys. She keeps a bright line in her work: she represents the professionals and communities, and does not take cases against facilities. Her philosophy is simple - this is a high-touch, human industry, and the gray areas take someone who has worn the business owner's hat. If you'd like to learn more about assisted living operations or regulation, reach out to Jenn through Davis-Miles Law Offices. One Fall Ends It All: Simple Home Fixes That Keep Seniors Independent

Guest: Drew Seifried, Owner and President of TruBlue Home Service Ally of Phoenix In this episode, we sit down with Drew Seifried, a U.S. military veteran and the Owner and President of TruBlue Home Service Ally of Phoenix, serving the entire Valley. Drew's philosophy is simple: take care of people, build relationships, and always do the right thing. His passion is helping seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities maintain their independence and age safely in place. Drew explains how TruBlue approaches aging in place through three services: full home modifications like barrier free showers, grab bars, and anti slip surfaces; handyman and home maintenance so seniors never have to climb a ladder or let a small plumbing leak turn into a flooded house; and ADA accessibility products. The goal is a home that never feels like a hospital room. The conversation is full of practical wisdom. Drew describes the invisible tripwires hiding in plain sight, like throw rugs and extension cords people have lived with for decades, and the simple fix of double sided tape when a beloved rug is not going anywhere. He shares the numbers that matter: one in four adults over 65 fall, and the bathroom is the most dangerous room in the house, with not one soft surface in it. From there he walks through budget friendly fixes anyone can make this weekend, from rubber threshold ramps and raised toilets to inexpensive lighting strips for that risky path from bedroom to bathroom. We also get into why suction cup grab bars are an incident waiting to happen, what stair lifts and vertical lifts can do for a home, and how Maricopa County's 2022 code changes are making these modifications easier than ever. Drew is equally serious about who comes through the front door: TruBlue's team members are employees, background checked, and trained in CPR and first aid. His advice for families starts simple. Visit your parents' home at night to see what they actually see. Ditch the backless slippers. Add bed rails and properly placed grab bars. As Drew puts it, one fall is often the difference between complete independence and complete dependence, and small investments now beat hospital bills later. Whether you are a senior planning to stay in your home or an adult child helping your parents do the same, this episode is full of practical, affordable ways to make home the safest place to be. TruBlue Home Service Ally of Phoenix offers free home safety assessments across the Phoenix metropolitan area. About Guest: Drew Seifried is a U.S. military veteran, entrepreneur, and the Owner and President of TruBlue Home Service Ally of Phoenix. His passion for service didn’t end with the military; it continues through his work helping people feel safer and more confident in their homes. Drew is especially passionate about supporting seniors who want to maintain their independence and age safely in place. At the heart of everything he does is a simple philosophy: take care of people, build relationships, and always do the right thing.
