"Giving Up Halfway" (半途而废, bàn tú ér fèi) — the phrase itself comes from the *Book of Rites: Doctrine of the Mean* (《礼记·中庸》): *"a noble person walks the path, and to give up halfway — that I cannot bear to do."* Today's tale comes from Fan Ye's *Book of the Later Han: Biographies of Exemplary Women — The Wife of Yue Yangzi* (《后汉书·列女传·乐羊子妻》), written during the Liu Song dynasty about the Eastern Han scholar Yue Yangzi and his wife — close to 1,600 years old. Long ago, there was a young man named Yue Yangzi who left home to study far away. At first, he was full of confidence. But after a while, the studies felt too hard, he missed home, and so he packed up and came back. His wife was startled to see him. She didn't scold him with raised voice — instead, she walked over to her loom, where a long bolt of cloth was slowly taking shape, thread by careful thread. She picked up a pair of scissors and held them up to the cloth. Yue Yangzi gasped, "What are you doing?" His wife answered, very softly, with a single line — can you guess what she said?

"The Blind Men and the Elephant" (盲人摸象, máng rén mō xiàng) is an ancient Buddhist parable from India that traveled into China with the sutras — recorded in the *Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra* (《大般涅槃经》), the *Dīrgha Āgama* (《长阿含经》), and others, well over 1,000 years old. One day, a great creature arrived in a town. It was tall and huge, with wide ears, a long curling trunk, and footsteps that seemed to shake the ground. Some blind men nearby heard about it and were curious — what *was* an elephant, really? Someone led them up close. The first man touched a leg — thick and round — and said, "An elephant is like a great pillar!" The second touched an ear, wide and soft, and said, "No, no — an elephant is like a big fan!" The third touched the trunk, long and curling, and said, "You're both wrong — an elephant is like a long rope!" The fourth touched the belly, broad and round, and said, "You're all mistaken — an elephant is clearly like a wall!" Their voices grew louder and louder... so who, in the end, was right?

"Three Fen Deep into the Wood" (入木三分, rù mù sān fēn) comes from Zhang Huaiguan's *Shu Duan: Wang Xizhi* (《书断·王羲之》) of the Tang dynasty — the story of the great Eastern Jin calligrapher Wang Xizhi, nearly 1,300 years old. Wang Xizhi was the most celebrated calligrapher of his time — everyone praised his characters. But his beautiful brush didn't come overnight. As a boy, he practiced every single day. If a stroke didn't look right, he'd write it again. When his hand grew sore, he'd rest, then start again. There was a small pool in his courtyard where he rinsed his brushes — over the years, the water in that pool turned ink-black from all his practice. One day he wrote some characters on a wooden plank. Later, a craftsman tried to scrape the ink off so the wood could be reused. He shaved off a layer — and the ink was still there. Another layer — *still there*. The ink seemed to have soaked deep into the wood. How could that be?

"One Cry to Astonish the World" (一鸣惊人, yī míng jīng rén) is a classic Chinese tale, over 2,000 years old, first recorded in *Han Feizi: Yu Lao* (《韩非子·喻老》) of the Warring States period — the story of King Zhuang of Chu and his minister Wu Ju. (Sima Qian's *Records of the Grand Historian: Biographies of the Jesters* also tells a parallel version about King Wei of Qi.) The State of Chu had a king named King Zhuang. At first, everyone thought he was a bit strange — he hardly said anything important, hardly did anything important, and his ministers grew anxious watching him. One minister named Wu Ju thought of a clever way to speak up. Instead of giving advice directly, he said, "Your Majesty, I've heard there is a great bird on the mountain. For three years, it has not flown. For three years, it has not made a sound. What sort of bird do you suppose it is?" King Zhuang slowly looked up, met Wu Ju's eyes... what do you think the king said?

"Sending Coal in the Snow" (雪中送炭, xuě zhōng sòng tàn) is a saying that first appeared in Song dynasty poetry — the Southern Song poet Fan Chengda even wrote the line "no need to send coal in the snow." Today's tale is a small story written around the idiom, hoping to leave little listeners with its gentle lesson. In the cold heart of winter, the north wind howled and snowflakes drifted down. In a village, an old woman lived alone in a small hut. One day she opened her coal basket and found it empty — without coal, the stove wouldn't light, and the room grew colder and colder. Next door lived a little boy named A-Ming. While sweeping snow that morning, he noticed no smoke rising from grandma's chimney and thought it odd. He hurried over, knocked, peeked in, and saw the empty basket — he understood at once. He ran home and, with his mother, packed up a basket of coal and a thick scarf... snow was still falling, but what would happen to grandma's little hut now?

"Standing in the Snow at Cheng's Door" (程门立雪, chéng mén lì xuě) comes from *History of Song: Biography of Yang Shi* (《宋史·杨时传》), compiled by Toqto'a and others during the Yuan dynasty — telling the story of the Northern Song scholar Yang Shi, who once stood in the snow outside the home of his master Cheng Yi. Nearly 900 years old. In the Song dynasty there lived a devoted student named Yang Shi. He had heard of a great scholar named Cheng Yi and went, with a friend, to ask his counsel. That day was bitterly cold — and halfway there, snowflakes began to fall. One flake, two flakes, three flakes, the snow grew thicker and thicker. The two arrived at Master Cheng's door and gave a soft knock. A servant whispered, "The master is resting." The friend said, "Let's come back later, then." But Yang Shi shook his head and decided to wait. The snow kept falling, slowly burying their shoes. When Master Cheng finally woke and opened the door... what did he see?
