Can We Give Away Our Preferences? - Homilies+ 11/3/26

One of the most generous gifts we could give away is our personal preference of who deserves our generosity. It is possible to give generously of our time, talent, and treasure, and still be giving only to fill ourselves rather than others. Our Lord teaches us by his example that perfect love of God and neighbor involves an emptying of oneself for another, even to the point of slavery, even to the point of death. St. Martin de Porres became a saint be choosing to live as a slave of Christ and a slave for his suffering brothers and sisters. Our invitation is to give God the gift of our generosity, and live the adventure of letting him decide to whom it belongs. Could I Live As a Saint? - Homilies+ 11/1/26

Could I live as a saint? Before his life took a decisive turn, St. Ignatius of Loyola wanted to be somebody. He dreamed of glory in battle, love of women, admiration of all. When we was wounded and confined to a bed to recover, be read the lives of the saints and noticed how he was starting to dream new dreams about his life. He asked himself the question that changed his life forever, "Could I live as a saint?" The answer was, "Yes!", with God's grace. Today we celebrate All Saints. We worship God for the gift of grace he has given the world, given us, through the lives of every single saint in Heaven. We also ask God for the gift of our conversion like that of St. Ignatius. We are all called to be saints, and to dream about our lives as saints of Jesus Christ with the hope of Heaven to live with all the saints forever. Our Eyes on the Lord, Our Hands on His Work - Homilies+ 10/27/26

The Kingdom of God is at hand. Are we waiting for the Kingdom, or working for the Kingdom? Both! If we wait on the Kingdom only, we look around at the Church and the world and simply comment or complain. If we work only we busy ourselves doing many good things that the Lord never actually asked us to do, giving ourselves a Savior complex. Our Lord teaches us that the Kingdom is at hand such that He is here, and we can follow Him each day, waiting on him and getting to work in the way he asks us to. What we need is repentance, a change of mind, to give our attention to Him. The most ordinary daily experience of this is in the household we are in. Ordinary hierarchy is how the Church continues to wait on the Lord. The order of a house, with the Husband as the head of his wife, is not just a patriarchal notion, it is how the Kingdom of God enters the home. A tiny seed of faithfulness to God can grow into a large tree in which others can also find the Kingdom. The tiny impact we can have on the world around us can cause the world to rise to God rather than descend into darkness. Where can I catch myself simply waiting for the Kingdom, its usually where I am complaining or commenting on how the Church or the world needs to change. Where am I busying myself without being asked, not listening? The Lord is inviting us to spread his Kingdom in the world, not our own. He is speaking to us each day in order to bring about the completion of the Kingdom on earth, Thy Kingdom Come. The Kingdom of God is at hand, let us keep our eyes and ears on the Lord, and our hands on His work he has entrusted to us, until the full coming of that Kingdom where he lives and reigns forever and ever.
