The Lost World (1925) + film festival chit chat & An Odyssey through the Odyssey | Ep.08

This week on Tonight's Second Feature, James & Rhys go back 66 million years to watch The Lost World (1925). Amidst the pioneering silent epics of the 1920s, Hollywood would release the first film adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic novel about a land where prehistoric creatures still roam.   In London, Professor Challenger announces that prehistoric creatures are alive and flourishing in the Amazon jungle and declares his intention to mount an expedition proving his point. Journalist Edward Malone volunteers to go and convinces his newspaper to fund the journey. Paula White hopes to find her father, a missing explorer. They and others undertake the voyage and witness dinosaurs and humanoids doing battle in a magnificent landscape. Silent Spectacular Begins with The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari & An Odyssey through the Odyssey | Ep.06

On this week’s Tonight's Second Feature James & Rhys dive into season 1 with Silent Spectaculars. Up first we silently watch The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari 1920. Considered the first German expressionist film, its striking visual style, and physiological narrative is still felt throughout modern horror.  Rhys will take us on our first stage of the journey towards the release of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. First we talk the book and learn what the odyssey is.  References: https://www.jahernandez.com/posts/the-cabinet-of-dr-caligari-1920https://www.nga.gov/stories/articles/what-german-expressionism-8-things-know https://www.britannica.com/topic/The-Cabinet-of-Dr-Caligari https://www.classicmoviehub.com/blog/silents-are-golden-a-closer-look-at-the-cabinet-of-dr-caligari-1920/ https://www.moma.org/collection/terms/die-brucke-the-bridge https://www.bohema-wien.com/artikel/german-expressionism https://theasc.com/article/german-cinema-comes-to-hollywood/ https://colorculture.org/cinematography-analysis-of-the-cabinet-of-dr-caligari-in-depth/ https://colorculture.org/cinematography-analysis-of-the-cabinet-of-dr-caligari-in-depth/ https://grokipedia.com/page/Carl_Mayer https://filmstarpostcards.blogspot.com/2021/09/gilda-langer.html https://carrieannebrownian.wordpress.com/2015/10/21/the-cabinet-of-dr-caligari-part-ii-behind-the-scenes/ https://www.classic-monsters.com/werner-krauss/  Tonight's Second Feature is Created, Produced & Hosted by James Hewitt, and Rhys Strang. John Carpenters The Fog (1980) Last episode of Season 0 | Ep.05

On this week of Tonight's Second Feature James & Rhys explore John Carpenters The Fog.  The Fog, released in 1980, was writer and director John Carpenter's third entry into the horror genre. Alongside perhaps his most important collaborator, Deborah Hill, the pair co-wrote and produced a film harking back to ghost stories of old. On the eve of celebrating its Centennial, strange poltergeist activities disrupt the small coastal town of Antonio Bay. Not long after, a mysterious fog bank rolls in, bringing with it the revengeful ghost of the Elizabeth Dane. On our last episode of Season 0 we get warmed up with one last entry of James' personal favourites. But beware…the fog may come for you! Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) & the boys talk African Cinema and Godzilla! | Ep. 02

On this week's Tonight's Second Feature, James & Rhys watch Creature From The Back Lagoon and talk about the Africa Across April challenge. African cinema has been severely neglected by film lovers. So this challenge is a chance to delve deeper into this overlooked continent. You can find out more on Letterboxd here: https://boxd.it/T7aAo In Season 0, we get warmed up with some of James' personal favourites. Creature from the Black Lagoon is a bit of an outlier having released many years after the initial run of Universal's Classic Monster films. We will explore the many behind the scenes stories including a long trail of unseccesful remakes and the scandal surrounding the creation of the "Gill-Man" himself. The Fly (1958) + First Introductions | Ep.01

On the first episode of Tonight's Second Feature James & Rhys discuss their first introductions to B cinema and watch The Fly (1958).  On Season 0 we get warmed up with some of James' personal favourites. The Fly 1958 was released to commercial and critical success and would go on to spawn a remake by the legendary David Cronenberg. Whilst a little silly this absolute gem still lives on strong amongst horror and movie fans alike.  References: https://andyoucallyourselfascientist.com/2018/07/22/rocketship-x-m-1950/#:~:text=However%2C%20for%20Robert%20Lippert%2C%20tallying,of%20a%20very%20contented%20duckhttps://www.tcm.com/articles/1082447/the-fly-1958https://planetoftheapes.fandom.com/wiki/Ben_Nyehttps://charlottesmakeupwebdotcom.wordpress.com/2015/03/08/145/https://variety.com/1958/film/reviews/return-of-the-fly-1117794422/https://www.cartermuseum.org/artists/karl-strusshttps://www.metv.com/stories/vincent-price-and-herbert-marshall-couldnt-stop-laughing-while-filming-this-dramatic-scene-in-the-fly-1958https://scifist.net/2024/09/21/the-fly/https://www.thesoundofvincentprice.com/the-fly-1958/https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0627087/https://www.christopherfowler.co.uk/blog/2016/09/14/the-mystery-of-george-langelaanTonight's Second Feature is Created, Produced & Hosted by James Hewitt, and Rhys Strang.
