Everything Feels Urgent? How to Prioritize What Actually Matters at Work

Does everything at work feel urgent? Your boss needs an update, a client has escalated an issue, your team is waiting on a decision, and your inbox is overflowing. But here's the question: Is everything actually urgent, or are you reacting to other people's pressure? In this episode of Clarity Under Pressure, Lisa Larson, former technology executive and founder of Mindful Corporate Mastery, explores why leaders struggle to prioritize competing demands, how urgency affects decision-making, and why responding faster doesn't always mean you're being more effective. Drawing on her experience leading technology teams, professional services organizations, and high-stakes cybersecurity engagements, Lisa explains how constantly reacting to urgent requests creates decision friction, delays important work, and reduces organizational effectiveness. In this episode, you'll learn: Why everything feels urgent, even when it isn't The difference between urgency and importance at work How external pressure influences your priorities and decisions Why constantly responding to requests can create more work instead of progress How to use the G.E.A.R.™ Decision Clarity Framework to evaluate competing priorities Five practical questions to ask before deciding what deserves your attention The G.E.A.R.™ Framework: Ground: Interrupt the automatic reaction to urgency. Explore: Separate facts from assumptions and verify what you actually know. Attune: Evaluate the pressure, consequences, and business impact. Resolve: Make an intentional decision about what happens next. The key takeaway: Urgency tells you how quickly someone wants something. Importance tells you what actually matters. Before you rearrange your entire day because someone says "ASAP," ask yourself: What happens if this waits? That one question can change how you prioritize work, manage competing demands, and lead under pressure. About Clarity Under Pressure Hosted by Lisa Larson, Clarity Under Pressure explores how pressure influences decision-making, leadership effectiveness, cognitive performance, and organizational results. Through practical leadership frameworks, real-world experiences, and actionable strategies, you'll learn to reduce decision friction, improve judgment, and make better decisions when the stakes are high. Before You React to That Email, Ask Yourself These 4 Questions | Clarity Check

Ever read an email that immediately made you defensive? Maybe your boss questioned a decision, a colleague copied leadership on a message, or someone challenged you in a meeting. Before you fire off that response, ask yourself: Are you responding to what's actually happening, or reacting to what you think it means? In this episode of Clarity Under Pressure, former technology executive Lisa Larson shares a practical Clarity Check to help you manage emotional reactions at work, challenge assumptions, and respond more effectively under pressure. Drawing on lessons from her career in technology leadership and cybersecurity incident response, Lisa explains how easily we can turn incomplete information into a story that influences our decisions. You'll learn the four questions behind the Reality Check: FACTS: What do I actually know? ASSUMPTIONS: What am I filling in? UNKNOWNS: What information am I missing? STORIES: What meaning have I attached to this situation? You'll also discover why a question from your boss isn't necessarily criticism, how assumptions can create unnecessary workplace conflict, and what to say when you need more information before responding. The key takeaway: Pressure may influence your first thought. It doesn't have to determine your next decision. Can't shut your brain off after work? You close your laptop, but your mind keeps replaying conversations, questioning decisions, and running through tomorrow's to-do list. In this episode of Clarity Under Pressure, Lisa Larson, former technology executive and founder of Mindful Corporate Mastery, explores why unfinished decisions and unresolved issues keep occupying our attention and how to recognize the difference between productive thinking and overthinking. Why You Keep Second-Guessing Your Decisions (And How to Stop)

Ever made a decision, felt confident about it, and then spent hours questioning whether you made the right call? You replay conversations. Wonder what you missed. Question your judgment. But here's the interesting part: Nothing has actually changed. In this episode of Clarity Under Pressure, Lisa Larson explores why high-performing leaders second-guess their decisions, how pressure and uncertainty contribute to overthinking, and why constantly revisiting decisions can undermine leadership performance. Drawing on her years in technology leadership and cybersecurity, Lisa explains why making a decision isn't always the hardest part. Sometimes it's what happens afterward. In this episode, you'll discover: Why second-guessing doesn't necessarily mean you made the wrong decision The difference between productive reflection and repetitive overthinking How fear of being wrong can become tied to your professional identity Why decision fatigue and mental loops consume valuable cognitive bandwidth How repeatedly reopening decisions creates confusion, rework, and delays for your team How to apply the G.E.A.R.™ Decision Clarity Framework to know when to reconsider a decision and when to move forward The key question: Has something materially changed, or has your comfort with the decision changed? Good decision-making isn't about always getting the outcome right. It's about evaluating the information available, recognizing when new evidence matters, and knowing when to close the loop. Are You Making a Decision or Just Reacting? 3 Questions to Get Clear

When the pressure is high and you have seconds to respond, are you actually making a decision, or reacting based on a familiar pattern? Experienced leaders are often rewarded for thinking fast, connecting the dots, and having an answer. But fast and right aren't always the same thing. As the stakes and complexity increase, the instincts that helped you succeed earlier in your career can begin creating Decision Friction. In this episode of Clarity Under Pressure, Lisa Larson explores what separates a clear decision from a sophisticated reaction and why pressure can cause even experienced leaders to default to familiar patterns. You'll learn how to examine three questions before your next high-pressure decision: • What do I actually know versus what am I assuming?• What is the real decision I'm making?• What's driving my first instinct: data, experience, fear, pressure, or an old pattern? The goal isn't to make decisions more slowly. It's to build the muscle memory to recognize what's actually happening before pressure makes the decision for you. Want to understand your own decision-making patterns? Take the free 3-minute Decision Clarity Diagnostic to identify the five patterns most likely to affect how you make decisions under pressure. What Would Happen if You Didn't Jump In? Stop Carrying Everything as a Leader

What would happen if you just didn’t do it? That question completely changed how I think about responsibility, leadership, and the tendency to carry too much. High-performing leaders often become the person who handles everything. You see the problem. You know how to solve it. You can probably do it faster. So you step in. But your ability to solve a problem doesn’t automatically make it your problem to solve. Over time, constantly stepping in can consume your leadership bandwidth and prevent other people from learning, making decisions, and taking ownership. In this episode of Clarity Under Pressure, I share a simple reflection I use before automatically jumping in to fix, solve, or take responsibility: Does this actually belong to me? What would happen if I didn’t do it? What am I protecting by holding on to it? Sometimes the path to better delegation isn’t another productivity system. It’s recognizing what actually requires your leadership and what you’ve simply gotten used to carrying. If you’re a leader, founder, executive, or high-performing professional struggling with delegation, decision fatigue, leadership bandwidth, or the pressure to handle everything yourself, this episode is for you. Clarity Under Pressure explores leadership decision clarity, decision-making under pressure, cognitive performance, burnout, and practical strategies to help you think more clearly and lead more effectively when the stakes are high.
