    The Stuff We Leave Behind: Lessons from Distributing My Parents’ Estate

    Talking about an emotional task, going through my parent's estate. We had to make their home presentable so we could put it on the market and at the same time, disperse of their things so when the house sold we could easily move everything out. Over the past two and a half years, both of my parents passed away. They were blessed to lived a long and happy life, both to their late 90's. They were both in love with each other until the end. After Dad passed away Mom was heartbroken, she only lived another year and a half. They were always planning their estate and talked constantly about how they wanted their affairs handled after they passed away. I will say that they did a great job overall. Their affairs were handled pretty smoothly, except for their "things." By that I mean their belongings. They had things that have been in our family since the late 1800's. Clothing, furniture, pictures, silverware, china, glassware, photographs, family history documentation and the list goes on and on. Did I mention boxes and boxes of photographs and family history? Luckily, brother Bob is our family historian. He has been blessed to be the "keeper of the history." Getting started with dispersing of their treasures was extremely hard. I spent months looking at everything, trying to find items Mom wanted given to specific family members. I found just about everything on her list. After what seemed forever, I finally got started and made a decision. "These items were going to this person, and these items were going to that person." I started donating clothing, pillows and blankets to NGO's (non government organizations), like Good Will, etc. Several trips every day. Mom's home was starting to look neater. She would be proud of that. Next came boxing up pictures that were everywhere. We didn't want too many personal pictures out when it was being shown. Just a few. After that we started boxing up and donating books that seemed to be everywhere. We also donated the kitchenware and glassware. That made the kitchen look cleaner and neater. The main walk-in closet became the storage space for items that were designated to someone. Each sibling had a spot for their boxes. All of a sudden, Mom and Dad's things were being packed so they could have new homes. THE HOUSE SOLD We received a solid offer on the house and accepted it. Now we had a definate date that everything needed to be packed up and moved out. We agreed to a date, now we needed a mover that worked on Sundays. VIP Movers in Columbia was recommended from a neighbor. We called them and booked the move. Sunday came and they packed everything up and delivered it to four drop offs. They did a great job. Titus was the lead. My Mistake - Stuff Left Behind After we moved everything out that family wanted we still had items that needed a home. We contacted a local NGO to pick up the remaining furniture and mirrors. I will say that that was a mistake. I should have contacted a local antique shop or thrift shop that valued the furniture and would see it have another life. The NGO that we used pretty much threw the furniture in the back of a truck, broke a lot of it and then piled what would not fit into a trash pile in front of the house. Empty House Now that the house was empty, we swept and vacuumed it for the next owners. It was eerily quiet.

    Seniors, learn how to use AI 😬 Stay Safe

    AI is everywhere in our daily life, our every day life, everywhere. Think about how your relationship with your doctor, plumber even your employer has changed in just the last couple of years. You have probably talked to AI or seen AI on your television set and not even know. When you talk to it or see it on the screen, things just seem a little bit off, not real. My advice to you is to learn how to recognize it and learn how to use it without being taken advantage of.

    Road Rage After 70 - What Actually Happened

    Road rage is an epidemic. The other day I was involved in a road rage incident in my neighborhood. I was driving in traffic and a hot head in a Porche came up from behind and started flashing his lights, honking his horn and yelling at me. His convertible top was down so everyone could hear him. He followed me into the super market while continuing to yell and honk his horn. He sped around me through the parking lot. As I was parking I noticed that he was waiting for me inside the sliding glass doors of the store.     How to get rid of your home electronics, computers and hard drives

    A neighbor called and wanted help in disposing of their old computer and wanted the hard drive to be erased securely. I called around or town and this is what I found. Best Buy and Staples have programs in place and Shred360 accepts residential drives if you go to their offices.     Hospital Bed Reality Check After Rehab

    This is my experience purchasing a hospital bed for my mother after she graduated from rehab after a hospital stay. She moved into an assisted living facility and only had one large room so decorating it was a challenge.     Why seniors need a list of their tech before the next gadget breaks :)

    Hey, y'all! I'm Trez. Seniors, you are never too old to learn to use technology. As you age, technology will be more important to you whether you like it or not. In this first episode, I challenge you to grabe a notebook, write on it "Trez's Tech Podcast - Learning to use technology as I get older". Keep this notebook in a safe and secure place. It will be a repository for all of your account and password information. Store it in a safe or locked drawer out of site of prying eyes. On the first page, at the top write "THE LIST" and start jotting down a list of all of the technology in your home.     Seniors - You Need To Learn To Use Tech As You Age

    Hey, y'all! I'm Trez. I thought I would start the conversation about why it is so important to learn how to use at least some technology as we age. Based on my personal and professional experience, seniors who had a little bit of comfort with technology seem to be able to adjust to newer technologies as they get oldere. If they strugled with just the basics then they either refused to use things that are too complicated. If you or your loved one(s) decide to keep on learning just a little about the tech and gadgets that are by default in their lives, the next thing they will be bragging on how they learned to do this and that.If you have found this video/podcast please share it with your parents or a older family friend.
