    S2 - E2 - Friendship & Faith Levels

Glory & the GrindSeason 2, Episode 2 Friendship & Faith Levels In this episode of Glory & the Grind, we're talking about navigating friendships and family relationships when people are at different places in their faith journey. What do you do when you're growing closer to Christ, but the people around you aren't? How do you love well without compromising your convictions? And how can God use those relationships for His glory? Carly’s Glory & Grind of the Week Grind: Brain Fog Glory: Humility & Trust God's Promise “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, then we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of His Son Jesus cleanses us from all sin.” -1 John 1:7 Main Topic: Being on Different Levels of Faith with Family & Friends Raleigh's Story During a high school junior retreat, Raleigh prayed for holy friendships.God answered that prayer—but not necessarily in the way she expected. As her faith grew, she found herself developing a false sense of spiritual superiority. What began as a desire for holy friendships slowly became a temptation to judge others who weren't where she was spiritually.Through that experience, God taught an important lesson: Holiness isn't about comparing ourselves to others. It's about becoming more like Christ. Not Every Friendship Has to Be the Deepest Friendship. One of the biggest mistakes we can make is expecting every friendship to fulfill every need. What to Do with Friends Who Aren't There Yet.  If you have friends or family members who aren't pursuing Christ the way you are: continue loving them, continue praying for them, and continue showing up for them.Feeling Alone in Your Faith.  Many Christians experience seasons where they feel spiritually isolated.Sometimes that loneliness is an invitation. God may be calling you to seek deeper community, stronger accountability, or friendships rooted in a shared pursuit of holiness. Spiritual friendships are rarely found accidentally. They often require intentional effort and a willingness to seek Christ-centered communities. When you pursue Jesus first, He has a way of bringing the right people alongside you.Reflection Questions  If your current friendships were the only witness others had to Jesus Christ, what would they see?Does your love for friends and family stem from your love for Christ, or does your love for Christ sometimes take a backseat to your love for others? Coming Next Episode: Lack of Discipline Next week, we're discussing something many of us struggle with: discipline. We'll talk about practical ways to overcome spiritual laziness, build healthy habits, and stay faithful in the small things.Connect With Us Have a question or topic you'd love us to discuss? 📧 thegloryandthegrindpod@gmail.com 📱 Instagram: @thegloryandthegrind Don't forget to follow us on Instagram and YouTube for updates, clips, and new episodes. S2 - E1 - Mary, Lovin' Like a Motha

Glory & the Grind Season 2 - Episode 1 “MARY” — Lovin' like a Motha Welcome back to Glory & the Grind! This week, we're diving into one of the most beloved—and often misunderstood—figures in Christianity: Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Raleigh’s Glory & Grind of the Week The Grind Potty Training & Summer with Kids The Glory A Mindset Shift (Still in Progress) God's Promise for the Week “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” -Luke 1:28 Main Topic: MARYA listener asked us about Mary's role in the Catholic faith and why Catholics pray to her. We answer that question both personally and scripturally. Carly's Story: Consecration to Mary During a season of deep suffering and uncertainty, Carly encountered Marian consecration through the writings of St. Louis de Montfort. One quote that profoundly impacted her was:“If we would go up to God, and be united with Him, we must use the same means He used to come down to us to be made Man and to impart His graces to us. This means a true devotion to our Blessed Lady.”Through consecration, Mary became a source of consolation, guidance, and deeper intimacy with Jesus. The Wedding at Cana provides a powerful image of Mary's intercession. She sees the need, brings it to Jesus, and directs others toward Him:“Do whatever He tells you.” (John 2:5) What Scripture Reveals About Mary 1. Mary is "Full of Grace" Luke 1:28 The angel Gabriel greets Mary with words unlike those given to anyone else: “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you.” This title reveals God's unique work in her life. Mary is prepared and perfected by God's grace for her role in salvation history. 2. Mary is the New Eve Luke 1:38 Mary's response to God is complete trust: “Let it be done to me according to your word.” Early Christians such as St. Justin Martyr saw Mary's obedient "yes" as the reversal of Eve's disobedience. Through faith and surrender, Mary becomes the model disciple. 3. Mary is the New Ark of the Covenant Luke 1:35; Revelation 11–12 Just as the Ark of the Old Covenant carried God's presence, Mary carried Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Overshadowed by the Holy Spirit, Mary becomes the living Ark of the New Covenant. Revelation also presents a powerful image of the woman whose offspring are those who keep God's commandments and bear witness to Jesus, highlighting Mary's spiritual motherhood of believers. 4. Jesus Gives Mary to the Church John 19:26–27 At the foot of the Cross, Jesus says: “Woman, behold your son.” And to the beloved disciple: “Behold your mother.” Catholics understand this moment as more than a personal arrangement. In giving Mary to John—the beloved disciple and leader within the early Church—Jesus gives Mary to all who follow Him. 5. Mary is Present at the Birth of the Church Acts 1:14 Mary is present in the Upper Room with the Apostles as they await Pentecost. She stands at both the beginning of Christ's earthly life and the beginning of the Church's mission. As the Holy Spirit descends upon the Church, Mary is once again present with her Spouse, participating in God's unfolding plan of salvation. What Catholics Also Believe About Mary Beyond what is explicitly stated in Scripture, Catholics receive teachings about Mary through Sacred Tradition. These include:Mary's perpetual virginityHer bodily Assumption into HeavenHer continuing intercession for the ChurchHer maternal role toward all ChristiansCatholics believe Mary continually points us toward Jesus and never toward herself.Mary's message remains remarkably consistent: Keep your eyes on her Son. S1 - E5 - Practical Prayer

Relationships flourish when both parties are actively present and fully engaged, transcending sporadic interactions. Similarly, prayer is intended to be a continual dialogue with God, not confined to liturgical settings or times of distress. God, in His infinite love and respect for our free will, invites us into a deeper communion with Him. He patiently anticipates our response, for while He remains ever-present, true intimacy with Him deepens when we consciously participate in this divine relationship. Quick Tips: 1. Build Prayer Into Your Routine 2. Fill Your Home with Reminders of God 3. Use Your Technology for Good 4. Read the Bible—Keep It Simple 5. Join a Prayer Community 6. Offer Your Work to God 7. Embrace Silence Raleigh then shares her favorite formula for prayer: remember P.R.A.Y. P – Praise: Thank God for who He is R – Reconcile: Ask for forgiveness A – Ask: Bring your needs and desires Y – Yield: Surrender your will to God’s Experts from The Catechism of the Catholic Church on Prayer and Mentioned Quotes:  CCC 2559: "Prayer is the raising of one's mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God." CCC 2565: "In the New Covenant, prayer is the living relationship of the children of God with their Father who is good beyond measure, with his Son Jesus Christ and with the Holy Spirit." “All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone" -Blaise Pascal “If you don’t have time to pray and read the scriptures, you are busier than God ever intended you to be.” -Matthew Kelly Reflection Questions: How are you currently prioritizing prayer in your life? S1 - E4 - Legalism: Law without Love

In this episode, Carly and Raleigh explore the difference between fear-based faith and love-rooted obedience — and why so many sincere believers struggle to tell the difference. God’s Promise from Micah 6:8 “What does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Carly shares a story from her past about a conversation with an ex-boyfriend regarding Mass attendance: If we’re practicing our faith primarily out of fear, are we missing the point of the Gospel? From there, we define two common spiritual struggles: Legalism- The belief that God’s love must be earned through perfect performance — following traditions, rules, or a “rule of life” strictly out of duty rather than love or intention.Scrupulosity- A disordered fear of sin that distorts God’s mercy, often leading to anxiety, self-punishment, and despair rather than freedom. Many saints — and many people earnestly trying to follow Christ — fall into legalism and scrupulosity because they want to please God. God can appear harsh in Scripture when misunderstood.  The world is often harsh and demanding.  Authority figures in our lives can sometimes model severity instead of mercy.  All of this can make it difficult to trust God — who is authority itself — as gentle, patient, and kind. Saint Spotlight: St. Jane de Chantal a powerful example of how God heals perfectionism through gentleness. Born in France in 1572.  Lost her mother early in life.  Later widowed after having six children, two of whom also died. Overwhelmed by grief, she became extremely strict with herself and her household. Turned to intense penances, rigid prayer schedules, and self-punishment in an attempt to regain control. Through the guidance of St. Francis de Sales, her spiritual director, she learned three life-changing truths: 1. God desires gentleness 2. Holiness grows through patience with weakness 3. Love must be free Together, they founded the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary, created especially for women who were widowed or physically unable to sustain demanding religious life. “Nothing is so strong as gentleness; nothing so gentle as true strength.” - St. Jane de Chantal is the patron saint of those who struggle with perfectionism. Key Faith Takeaways 1. A well-formed conscience helps us live God’s commandments in love, not anxiety. 2. Jesus consistently challenged rigid interpretations of the law in the Gospels. 3. The Pharisees remind us what happens when rules are prioritized over mercy, justice, and faith. 4. The Book of Micah calls us back to a God who desires freedom, humility, and relationship — not fear-based obedience. 5. God does not ask us to earn His love or our salvation. Practical Recommendations for Healing 1. Go to Confession regularly 2. Speak honestly with a priest or spiritual director 3. Practice conversational prayer 4. Read gentle, trustworthy spiritual works 5. Find an accountability partner who reminds you of God’s goodness when fear creeps in Reflection Question: When you think about your spiritual life, are you filled with anxiety and a sense of loss? Do you believe you are beloved by a gentle, loving God? Scripture Passages References “Therefore, I am content with weakness, insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:10  Recommended Resources The Heart of Perfection — Colleen Carroll Campbell Introduction to the Devout Life — St. Francis de Sales Have a “grind” you want us to discuss in future episodes? S1 - E3 - Modern Movements in the Church

In today’s episode, we’re diving into a big question: how do different movements within the Church enrich or challenge our faith? We begin with God’s promises in Deuteronomy 7:6–7, 9, where we’re reminded that God chooses His people not because of their greatness or numbers, but because of His faithfulness and love. That sets the tone for our conversation about unity, identity, and belonging within the Church. Throughout the episode, we use Terri and Terry from Monsters University as a fun analogy for two major spiritualities in the Catholic Church: Traditional Latin Mass Catholics and Charismatic Catholics. Like the conjoined twins, these groups can seem wildly different in personality and expression, but they’re still connected to the same body and ultimately moving toward the same goal — a deeper relationship with Christ. We spend some time clarifying vocabulary because terms like “Traditional Catholic,” “Rad Trad,” and “Charismatic” can carry a lot of assumptions. We talk about how Traditional Catholics are often deeply drawn to the Church’s historic liturgy and reverence, especially the Traditional Latin Mass, while “Rad Trads” tend to represent a stricter or more separatist mindset. On the other side, we explore the Charismatic Renewal movement that grew after Vatican II and emphasizes the active presence of the Holy Spirit through expressive worship, contemporary music, and spiritual gifts. From there, we walk through three major differences between these groups: liturgy, doctrine, and community worship style. We discuss how Traditionalists often value structure, precision, and reverence, while Charismatics lean toward spontaneity, personal conversion, and experiential prayer. Even though those differences can create tension, we also reflect on how they reveal the richness and diversity within Catholic spirituality. Most importantly, we talk about what these groups actually share. Despite the external contrasts, both traditions are deeply devoted to Christ, committed to the Church, and passionate about prayer and evangelization. By the end of the episode, we come back to the idea that the Catholic Church has always made room for different spiritual expressions. Instead of focusing on which group is “right,” we challenge ourselves to appreciate the beauty of that diversity while staying rooted in Christ and the core truths of the faith. S1 - E2 - Catholic Perspective of Wellness Culture

In this episode, Carly and Raleigh break down the Catholic perspective of wellness culture.  Carly shares her personal postpartum journey, touching on nutrition, exercise, yoga, and vegetarianism. Together, she and Raleigh examine how Catholics can approach wellness thoughtfully: discerning God’s will for the body, integrating healthy habits as spiritual practices, and staying aware of the cultural messages that shape our choices. Main Question: What’s a Catholic to think about wellness culture? In what ways can fitness, nutrition, or homemaking become spiritual practices? God’s Promises from 1 Thessalonians 5:23 “May the God of peace himself make you perfectly holy and may you entirely, spirit, soul, and body, be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Carly’s postpartum journey Navigating nutrition and exercise through a Catholic lens Questions around yoga, vegetarianism, and caring for the bodyDiscerning God’s will in how we use our bodiesWhere wellness culture aligns with Catholic spirituality—and where it clashesReflection Question: Are there any dangers in following the classic sayings: “follow your heart” or “do what feels right”? References:  > Catechism of the Catholic Church367 Sometimes the soul is distinguished from the spirit: St. Paul for instance prays that God may sanctify his people "wholly", with "spirit and soul and body" kept sound and blameless at the Lord's coming.236 The Church teaches that this distinction does not introduce a duality into the soul.237 "Spirit" signifies that from creation man is ordered to a supernatural end and that his soul can gratuitously be raised beyond all it deserves to communion with God. S1 - E1 - Can a Faithful Life Be Balanced?

In this episode, Carly and Raleigh explore what it means to pursue a Christ-centered life while juggling prayer, work, relationships, rest, and wellness. A balanced life isn’t about perfect proportions — it’s about right priorities. When Christ is at the center, everything else aligns with greater clarity, peace, and purpose. God’s Promise from Matthew 6: 30-33 God tells us “that God clothes the grass of the field…will he not provide much more for you…Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you."  1. The Myth of the “Balanced Breakfast ”We grew up hearing about a “balanced breakfast”: sugary cereal, toast, fruit, and a glass of OJ or milk. The message? “Yes, buy our cereal — but make sure you add the good stuff.” In the same way, we often try to pack our lives with responsibilities and only later wonder why faith feels squeezed in on the side. Key Question: If you look at your morning plate, have you set aside anything intentional for prayer? 2. Finding Balance: Prayer, Work, Health, RestWork: Avoiding Burnout (Especially in Ministry) Even holy work can drain us when we don’t root it in Christ. We talk about how burnout happens, why it matters, and what healthy boundaries look like. Family & Friends: Pursue Relationships that Pursue GoodnessNot part-time pursuit — full-time. Surround yourself with people who strive toward virtue, who sharpen and support your desire for holiness. Rest & Wellness: Sabbath as a Gift, Not a LuxurySmall habits matter: hydration, movement, silence, intentional breaks. But the deeper question is:  1. Why am I doing what I’m doing? 2. Does this glorify God? 3. Will it help me glorify God in the future? Your Sabbath matters: Physically — let your body rest. Spiritually — bring everything to Jesus and leave it with Jesus. 3. Time, Intention, and Investment Writer Dana Gioia viewed each hour of the day as a dollar he could invest.  With 24 “dollars” available, he had to choose wisely where they went. Reflection Questions: 1. Where am I currently investing my time and energy? 2.  What daily habits steal time from what truly matters? 3.  What deserves to come first instead? 4. Seeking Christ Above Everything C.S. Lewis: “Look for Christ and you will find Him, and with Him everything else thrown in.” Our Challenges For You: How do I actively seek Christ? How would I like to seek Him? What intentional steps can we take to put Him first and allow everything else to fall into place? Have a “grind” you want us to discuss in future episodes?
