Bad Bunny Exposed America's Biggest Energy Crime

Last Sunday, while half of America watched my Patriots get crushed, a Puerto Rican kid named Bad Bunny climbed a fake power pole in front of 100 million people and said what Washington won’t: the grid is broken. The dancing linemen weren’t entertainment. They were a funeral procession for a crime scene that’s been burning for eight years. In this episode, I walk through Puerto Rico’s power grid timeline, from Hurricane Maria to Fiona to the $1 billion Congress earmarked for distributed solar and storage, and how that funding was cancelled. I’ll explain who profits from keeping the grid broken, including a utility drowning in $9 billion of debt and the Wall Street creditors circling it, and why Puerto Ricans pay some of the highest electricity rates in America for some of the least reliable power. Then I’ll show you the solution that’s coming from a box you can plug into your backyard: plug-and-play solar and storage, from Raya Power’s pilot to four million balcony solar kits in Germany to new laws in Utah and beyond. Puerto Rico doesn’t have a grid problem. It has a centralization problem, and the answer is millions of small decisions by people who got tired of waiting. In this episode: How Bad Bunny’s halftime performance pointed at a real, ongoing energy crisisThe Puerto Rico grid timeline: Hurricane Maria in 2017, Hurricane Fiona in 2022, and the years of patchwork repairs in betweenThe $1 billion Congress earmarked for distributed energy, and the cancellation of that funding by the Department of EnergyPREPA’s $9 billion debt, the stalled restructuring talks, and what “energy colonialism” looks like in practiceRaya Power’s plug-and-play solar plus battery system: no permits, no interconnection agreement, installs in about two hoursWhy plug-in and balcony solar is booming in Germany and spreading across EuropeUtah’s plug-and-play solar law, similar bills in 20+ states, and the new UL safety certificationWhy millions of small systems could add up to the equivalent of major power plants without new transmission linesWhy this isn’t just a Puerto Rico story Take Action: Book a Free 30-Minute Industry Analysis Call: https://calendly.com/solarpunkpro/30-min-chat Join the SolarPunkPro Masterclass: https://www.solarpunkpro.com/masterclass Connect: Website: https://www.solarpunkpro.com/quick-links Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/manzerj Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SolarPunkPro/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@solarpunkpro ABOUT SOLARPUNKPRO: This podcast breaks down how the clean energy transition actually works: the economics, the opportunities, and the skills that matter. National Grid Built Marketplace for Virtual Power Plants: Jobs Exploding Now

Last episode I told you Google’s parent company paid billions for Intersect Power. This time I have another data point, and it’s arguably more exciting, because it isn’t a tech giant making a bet. It’s National Grid, one of the slowest-moving institutions in American business, doing something it has never done before: building an open marketplace where hundreds of companies compete to solve grid constraints using rooftop solar, home batteries, EVs, and smart thermostats. I’ll explain the problem National Grid is solving across 23 constrained locations in Massachusetts, and why activating distributed resources beats pouring concrete and hanging copper. Then I’ll show you how the marketplace works, from portfolio bidding that lets a one-megawatt company compete to the dispatch testing that auditions providers before they get paid. I’ll zoom out to the booming virtual power plant ecosystem, including the aggregators, hardware makers, and software platforms making it run. And I’ll share the numbers that prove the economics: a VPP can cost less than half as much as a new gas plant, and one Sunrun dispatch event delivered 340 megawatts from people’s rooftops in a single evening. This infrastructure is being built right now, and the ecosystem around it is hiring. In this episode: Why Alphabet’s acquisition of Intersect Power signals that renewable energy entrepreneurship has moved from the fringe to the centerNational Grid’s new marketplace, built with Piclo, for procuring grid flexibility from distributed energy resourcesThe problem it solves: 23 constrained locations in Massachusetts, and why activating neighborhood batteries and flexible loads beats building new substationsHow the marketplace works: utilities post needs, companies bid, and portfolio bidding lets small players participateThe dispatch testing process, and how providers can stack revenue across multiple programsPiclo’s rapid US expansion, and the broader virtual power plant marketThe key players: aggregators like Voltus, Leap, and Enel X, platforms like Virtual Peaker, and hardware makers like SonnenWhy VPPs are winning on cost, and how Sunrun delivered 340 MW during a June 2025 New England heat waveWhy the ecosystem around this marketplace is hiring Take Action: Book a Free 30-Minute Industry Analysis Call (map the companies, programs, and opportunities in your region): https://calendly.com/solarpunkpro/30-min-chat Connect: Website: https://www.solarpunkpro.com/quick-links Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/manzerj Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SolarPunkPro/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@solarpunkpro ABOUT SOLARPUNKPRO: This podcast breaks down how the clean energy transition actually works: the economics, the opportunities, and the skills that matter. Google Paid $4.75B for Solar Company Started by 4 People: Build the Next One

The renewable energy transition is inevitable, and it pays more to be early than to be perfect. This episode is the proof. In 2016, four people with interconnection expertise and a thesis that data centers would outgrow the grid started a company called Intersect Power. Years of boring spreadsheets, cold calls, and utility studies later, Google came calling with a $4.75 billion check. I’ll walk you through what actually happened: how co-founder Sheldon Kimber was just a project developer grinding through interconnection applications when he spotted an eight-year gap between how fast data centers need power and how fast utilities can deliver it. Then I’ll show you five “Intersect moments” forming right now with far less competition: interconnection as a service, community solar aggregation, microgrid as a service, residential battery aggregation, and EV fleet electrification consulting. Each one comes with the problem, the gap, the business model, and the revenue potential, and none requires inventing technology or being an engineer. I’ll also lay out a realistic four-phase path for building one while keeping your day job. The revolution isn’t just getting hired. It’s building the companies doing the hiring. In this episode: The Intersect Power story: from four people with a thesis in 2016 to a $4.75 billion Google investmentWhy Sheldon Kimber spotted the gap between data center timelines (two years) and utility upgrade timelines (ten years)Five clean energy business opportunities with low competition: interconnection as a service, community solar aggregation, microgrid as a service, residential battery aggregation, and EV fleet electrification consultingThe problem, gap, business model, and revenue potential for each opportunityA four-phase path from keeping your job and learning the system to going full timeWhy Jason, a former Enterprise Rent-A-Car manager, landed three job offers in EV fleet software after the MasterclassThe common objections (no background, no connections, no capital, no time) and why they don’t hold upWhy “early” is a moving target, and how the window is closing Take Action: Book a Free 30-Minute Industry Analysis Call: https://calendly.com/solarpunkpro/30-min-chat Join the SolarPunkPro Masterclass: https://www.solarpunkpro.com/masterclass Connect: Website: https://www.solarpunkpro.com/quick-links Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/manzerj Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SolarPunkPro/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@solarpunkpro ABOUT SOLARPUNKPRO: This podcast breaks down how the clean energy transition actually works: the economics, the opportunities, and the skills that matter. Diesel Is Over: How Electric Buses Quietly Took Over Cities

While the culture war screams about EV mandates and Cybertrucks, cities around the world have quietly made a decision: diesel buses are dead, electric buses have won, and the only debate left is how fast we get there. In this episode, I start with the elephant in the parking lot, your car, and ask whether a $12,000-a-year machine that sits idle 95% of the time really represents freedom. Then I make the case for why electric buses matter more than personal EVs, and why they won on spreadsheets rather than ideology: fewer moving parts, predictable operating costs, and a lower total cost of ownership over their lifetime. I’ll explain how China deployed over 400,000 electric buses while American cities fought through stakeholder meetings, why electric school buses became a public health issue that even fossil-friendly school boards couldn’t argue with, and why a depot full of charging buses is a grid asset rather than a grid threat. I’ll also map the careers growing around this transition, from fleet electrification managers to high-voltage maintenance techs to battery storage integrators. True freedom isn’t owning a car. It’s not needing one. In this episode: Why car dependence looks a lot like the opposite of freedom, and what a car actually costs per year compared to a transit passWhy electric buses beat diesel on total cost of ownership: efficiency, moving parts, regenerative braking, and predictable fuel costsHow China deployed over 400,000 electric buses, and why Shenzhen went from zero to 16,000 faster than most US cities can approve a route changeWhy electric school buses became a public health issue, and how idle buses can become grid assets through vehicle-to-grid and demand responseDebunking “the grid can’t handle it”: how depot charging is planned, scheduled, and flexibleHow solar canopies and battery storage turn bus depots into microgridsCareers growing around electric bus fleets: fleet electrification managers, charging infrastructure planners, high-voltage maintenance techs, grid integration engineers, and battery storage integrators Take Action: Book a Free 30-Minute Consultation (mapping opportunities in your area): https://calendly.com/solarpunkpro/30-min-chatJoin the SolarPunkPro Masterclass (how energy systems work and how to land these jobs): https://www.solarpunkpro.com/masterclass Connect: Website: https://www.solarpunkpro.com/quick-links Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/manzerj Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SolarPunkPro/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@solarpunkpro ABOUT SOLARPUNKPRO: This podcast breaks down how the clean energy transition actually works: the economics, the opportunities, and the skills that matter. The Company That Outsold Tesla (And Career Opportunities It Creates)

Pop quiz: which company sold more electric vehicles last year than Tesla? If you said “I have no idea,” you’re like most Americans, and that’s exactly the problem. In this episode, I introduce you to BYD, the company quietly eating the world’s lunch while everyone argues about whether EVs are a fad. I’ll take you back to 1995, when a chemist named Wang Chuanfu started making batteries for cordless phones, and show you how that battery-first mindset explains everything that came after. I’ll break down the 2020 Blade battery and the lithium iron phosphate bet that Western automakers dismissed, and why it unlocked a profitable $25,000 EV. Then I’ll compare BYD and Tesla as two completely different philosophies of how electrification happens: Tesla made EVs cool, BYD is making them inevitable. I’ll explain why tariffs won’t save Detroit, and what it would take to compete: invest in batteries, streamline permitting, train workers. And I’ll map the jobs created by BYD’s ecosystem, from EV chargers and fleet electrification to storage and grid software. You don’t need to work for BYD to benefit from it existing, but you do need the skills. Let’s talk about getting them. In this episode: The pop quiz: the company that out-sold Tesla in EVs, and why most Americans haven’t heard of itBYD’s origin story: from cordless phone batteries in 1995 to buying an automaker in 2003Why BYD is an energy company that happens to sell vehicles, and what that framing changesThe 2020 Blade battery and the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) bet: cheaper, safer, longer-lasting, and easier to recycle than nickel-rich chemistriesBYD vs. Tesla: two philosophies of electrification, and why “industrial math” wins over the long runWhy subsidies aren’t the real difference, and why tariffs only delay the reckoningWarren Buffett’s early BYD investmentDirect and ecosystem jobs created by BYD’s growth, including EV charging, fleet electrification, storage, and grid software, with salary ranges Take Action: Book a Free 30-Minute Industry Analysis Call: https://calendly.com/solarpunkpro/30-min-chatJoin the SolarPunkPro Masterclass: https://www.solarpunkpro.com/masterclass Connect: Website: https://www.solarpunkpro.com/quick-links Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/manzerj Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SolarPunkPro/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@solarpunkpro ABOUT SOLARPUNKPRO: This podcast breaks down how the clean energy transition actually works: the economics, the opportunities, and the skills that matter. Mark Carney vs Trump on EVs: Why America Lost & What It Means for Jobs

Mark Carney just fired shots, and the American auto industry is having a nervous breakdown. In this episode, I take on the question everyone keeps getting wrong. It isn’t “how did China win EVs?” It’s “why did the United States choose not to compete?” I’ll walk through why Carney’s comments about reducing tariffs on Chinese EVs aren’t ideology but a spreadsheet-driven read of the risk, and why I’d trust the guy who spent 30 years stress-testing entire economies over the guy who bankrupted casinos. Then I’ll kill the laziest argument in the debate, that “China only won because they cheated,” by looking at what China actually did starting in 2009: build battery factories before demand, lock down the supply chain, and show up every year for 15 years while Detroit’s strategy changed every election cycle. I’ll explain why tariffs buy time but don’t build factories, why a $10,000 EV against a $40,000 EV is a competency crisis rather than a trade issue, and why the real damage of tariffing Canada and Mexico is to our own continental supply chain. And I’ll close with what matters for your career: this transition doesn’t need Washington’s permission, and the jobs are hiring today. In this episode: Why the EV transition is no longer about climate but about competenceWhy Mark Carney’s case for lowering tariffs on Chinese EVs is a risk assessment, not ideologyWhy tariffs on Canada and Mexico weaken the North American supply chain that could have competed with ChinaThe “China only won because they cheated” myth, and what China actually did differently: battery-first strategy, vertical integration, and 15 years of consistencyBYD’s origins as a battery company, and the cost gap between a $10,000 Chinese EV and a $40,000 American oneWhat Detroit could do instead: standardized battery packs, volume over luxury margins, and building for the global marketWhy the global shift to EVs will eventually collapse combustion-vehicle supply chainsThe grid engineering, battery, power electronics, charging infrastructure, and supply chain roles hiring right now Take Action: Book a Free 30-Minute Industry Analysis Call: https://calendly.com/solarpunkpro/30-min-chat Join the SolarPunkPro Masterclass: https://www.solarpunkpro.com/masterclass Connect: Website: https://www.solarpunkpro.com/quick-links Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/manzerj Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SolarPunkPro/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@solarpunkpro ABOUT SOLARPUNKPRO: This podcast breaks down how the clean energy transition actually works: the economics, the opportunities, and the skills that matter. Why Venezuela Invasion Costs You $20M/Day in Taxes

📢 Note: This episode was originally released on January 23, 2026. For our current episodes, head over to our socials and catch the latest there. ----- I’m watching the news coverage of Venezuela like a car crash in slow motion, except this one costs an estimated $13 to $20 million per day, and somehow nobody is talking about who’s paying for it. Last episode we looked at Venezuela as a case study in energy geopolitics. This time, we follow the money. I’ll walk you through what “oil subsidies” really means, why the $20 to $30 billion in direct tax breaks is only the visible tip, and how the real costs hide in defense budgets, Medicare and Medicaid bills, disaster relief, and cleanup that taxpayers absorb. I’ll break down what it costs to keep carrier groups and surveillance assets deployed, why $50 to $100 billion a year of US defense spending is tied to securing oil supply routes, and what the IMF says the fossil fuel industry is really getting. Then I’ll flip the script: oil requires coercion, but sunlight falls everywhere. Distributed energy makes wars economically irrational, and the people building it are earning real salaries doing it. You can’t vote, protest, or tweet your way out of oil dependence, but you can build your way out. In this episode: The “greatest accounting trick in history”: how oil looks cheap by hiding most of its true cost in defense budgets, health care, and disaster reliefDirect oil subsidies versus the hidden ones in the Pentagon, State Department, FEMA, Medicare, Medicaid, and Superfund cleanupsWhy the US military maintains a presence in oil-producing regions and what that costs annuallyA day-by-day cost breakdown of the Venezuela operation, from 30 days to a full yearThe environmental subsidy: Deepwater Horizon, Exxon Valdez, and who really pays for spills and leaksThe health subsidy: premature deaths, asthma, Cancer Alley, and the bills sent to taxpayers and insurersWhy oil requires coercion and distributed energy does notSalary ranges for solar installers, wind techs, battery storage technicians, microgrid designers, and energy analysts Take Action: Book a Free 30-Minute Industry Analysis Call (hiring companies, in-demand skills, realistic salary ranges in your city): https://calendly.com/solarpunkpro/30-min-chatJoin the SolarPunkPro Masterclass (electricity basics, solar design, battery storage, heat pumps, and landing a six-figure job): https://www.solarpunkpro.com/masterclass Connect: Website: https://www.solarpunkpro.com/quick-links Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/manzerj Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SolarPunkPro/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@solarpunkpro ABOUT SOLARPUNKPRO: This podcast breaks down how the clean energy transition actually works: the economics, the opportunities, and the skills that matter. US-Venezuela Attack Explained: Oil Addiction & Energy Independence

📢 Note: This episode was originally released on January 10, 2026. For our current episodes, head over to our socials and catch the latest there. ----- If you can hold two thoughts in your head at the same time, you're going to need that skill for this one. Thought one: Maduro is a brutal dictator, and seeing him out is not a bad thing. Thought two: I'm nervous that the US and its current administration don't have a fully baked plan for what comes next. In this episode, I walk through the US track record on regime change since World War II, from Iran and Guatemala to Iraq and Libya, and the pattern that keeps repeating: we're good at the destruction and spectacularly bad at the "what comes next." Then I break down why oil keeps showing up in the story, including "refinery inertia," the reason Venezuelan heavy crude matters to US refineries built for a different kind of oil. From there I connect it to the mission of this show: every authoritarian regime has shared the same addiction to fossil fuels, and every rooftop solar array, microgrid, and heat pump is a step toward ending it. I'll also lay out the six-figure careers building that alternative. You can't stop a war from your couch, but you can stop funding the system that causes them. In this episode: Holding two thoughts at once: Maduro's regime was brutal, but the how and why of US intervention still matterThe US track record on regime change since WWII, and the recurring failure to plan for what comes nextWhy the Venezuela operation looks different from past interventions: no UN case, no coalition building, no pretense beyond oil"Refinery inertia": why the US exports its light, sweet crude and still needs heavy crude from places like VenezuelaWhy fossil fuels and authoritarian power are so tightly linked, and how distributed energy breaks that linkHow solar, microgrids, and heat pumps work as geopolitical tools, with examples from Puerto Rico, Kenya, and GermanyCareer paths and salary ranges in solar, wind, battery storage, and microgrid designJames's dream of taking the Masterclass to communities with less reliable grids Take Action: Book a Free 30-Minute Industry Analysis Call (regional opportunities, hiring companies, in-demand skills, realistic salary progression): https://calendly.com/solarpunkpro/30-min-chatJoin the SolarPunkPro Masterclass (electricity basics, grid integration, solar design, heat pumps, batteries, and landing six-figure jobs): https://www.solarpunkpro.com/masterclass Connect: Website: https://www.solarpunkpro.com/quick-links Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/manzerj Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SolarPunkPro/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@solarpunkpro ABOUT SOLARPUNKPRO: This podcast breaks down how the clean energy transition actually works: the economics, the opportunities, and the skills that matter.
