Just Make The Bloody Podcast

Decibelle Creative

Just Make The Bloody Podcast is for anyone who’s had ‘launch a podcast’ sitting on their to-do list forever. Hosted by Buckers (hello, that’s me), this show is an opportunity to explore what it really takes to make a bloody great podcast, whatever that might look like for you… As a podcast producer I’m the first to champion other people getting behind the mic, but when it comes to putting my own voice in the spotlight, I’ll pass thanks… But apparently we can’t just live happily ever after in the comfort zone (rude) and so the time has come: here ends the pod-crastination, and here begins my podcasting *j o u r n e y* (bloody hell) and you’re invited too, so hop in and make yourself comfy! This is me taking the ultimate exercise in accountability: I’m grabbing the ‘visibility bull’ by the horns, finally taking my own advice to ‘just start’, and giving myself permission to figure it out on the way. Who better to learn from than those already in the game? I’ll be chatting with other hosts and getting geeky about their podcast process, bringing you behind-the-scenes chats with my podcast-obsessed wing-woman (and long time school friend) Katie, and the odd solo episode if the mood takes me. Each episode will be a chance to learn more about podcasting: the process of recording, launching, maintaining and growing one. This is not a ‘podcasting-by-numbers’ vibe. I’m not on a mission to find some secret magic formula. The idea is to give you a taste of everything, and explore together the many different ways a podcast can be approached, recorded, produced and developed. Think of it like podcast tapas: take what works for you, leave what doesn’t, then build your own. Find your podcast patatas bravas if you will… This show is for anyone wanting to explore the process of making a podcast. Whatever stage of podcasting you’re at, whether you’re already publishing episodes, or you just have an idea scribbled on the back of a receipt, you’re welcome here. So grab your headphones and a biccie (make mine a jammy dodger) and let’s just make the bloody podcast! Buckers x

  1. Episode 1

Welcome to Just Make The Bloody Podcast - The Pilot (Part 1)

"This podcast is a note to myself and a love letter to anyone else who has had on their to-do list 'make a bloody podcast'." Buckers Welcome along to our first ever episode! If you’ve been willing yourself to JUST MAKE THE BLOODY PODCAST for longer than you care to admit, you’ve found the right podcast to help you *actually* do it. Hi from me, Buckers (producer of podcasts for everyone other than myself - until now!) and my long-time school pal and avid podcast listener Katie - we're new round here and we've got a lot to say (and learn!) so prepare yourself for the ultimate* podcasting podcast. *bold of us. This episode is Part 1 of what we’re referring to as ‘The Pilot’ (because that makes it sound like an edgy new comedy which makes us feel cool and relevant). The first thing to say about this episode is that what should have been a tidy, concise introduction to the podcast and it's hosts inevitably turned into a hefty 2 hour recording sesh (Katie genuinely lost her voice by the end). Luckily for us though, the entire premise of Just Make The Bloody Podcast hangs its hat on starting scrappy and figuring it out later, so we decided to split it into 2 episodes, and here we are with part 1. Bish bash bosh. In this episode As well as getting acquainted with us (how do you do, lovely weather we're having etc) you’ll be finding out all of this too: What this podcast is actually going to be about (probably)Why it can be tough to get a podcast off the ground (even when you REALLY want to)The barriers and challenges around visibility *shudder* in generalWhy we believe there is no single ‘right way’ to make a successful podcastThe unexpected opportunities, friendships and communities that can come from podcastingHow we're making this podcast the ultimate guinea pig - a big ol' visible (and, well, audible) experiment in learning out loud (so we can pass that learning on to you!)the nitty gritty of making a podcast and what we're looking forward to probing our fellow podcaster guests about.Tapas* (specifically patatas bravas) *may or may not be entirely relevant to podcasting but we can do whatever we want so you may as well get on board :) That's it. Those are the show notes. Thankyou for being here, and enjoy! Buckers & Katie x Tech Set Up How this episode was recorded: Intro & Outro: recorded on my phone*, sitting in my car parked on the drive like a weirdoMain episode: recorded in Riverside (Buckers: USB dynamic mic, Katie: Laptop mic, enhanced in Riverside) *at 10pm the night before this episode was published #lastminutelucy Subscribe to Just Make The Bloody Podcast! 2. Episode 2

    The Pilot (Part 2)

“a bit of science, a bit of art, and a bit of something unexplainable."If Part 1 tickled your tastebuds then congratulations, you clearly have excellent taste – welcome back to Part 2 of our gloriously unplanned pilot episode. I’ve given Katie the task of asking me some half-sensible questions about who I am, how I got into the world of podcasting, and what I want you to come away from this podcast with. I manage to answer most of them AND squeeze in a fun (for me) anecdote about my mum’s old car. It’s not to be missed… We chat about my journey from local commercial radio into podcast production, why it’s taken six years to follow my own advice and start this BLOODY PODCAST, and the vision for what we want it to become. In this episode: · How redundancy during COVID accidentally led me into podcasting · What radio taught me… and what I had to unlearn when I started making podcasts · Why this podcast is just as much about visibility as it is about podcasting · My suspicion that confidence probably isn’t the thing that arrives before the thing you need it for… · Some half-baked at best ideas for future podcast features and realising all we’ve got so far is a list of rehashed ideas other people came up with first (is there ANY hope of coming up with an original idea by the end of series 1?) · Gregg Wallace. This episode also serves as a reminder that what you’re listening to is a podcast being built in real time, off the cuff, and by the seat of our pants. We genuinely don’t know exactly what this show will become yet and that’s absolutely fine and not anxiety inducing in any way 😊 Enjoy the banjos. 3. Episode 3

Building a #1 podcast with award winning content creator Alison Perry

"Done is better than perfect." Alison Perry Welcome to our very first guest episode! Joining us is the gorgeous Alison Perry - writer, author, blogger, and host of UK #1 parenting podcast, Not Another Mummy Podcast. Alison has been podcasting since 2017 (which in podcast years is practically prehistoric), long before celebrities rocked up with their branded mic muffs. Alison shares almost a decade’s worth of podcasting wisdom, from how she spotted a gap in the market, pieced together a podcast from Google searches and Facebook forums, and kept showing up episode after episode. Alison has interviewed everyone from bestselling authors to the Prime Minister - in our book she is living proof that consistency and backing yourself (and being a generally fantastic human) really can take you to some unexpected places. This chat also covers confidence, visibility, editing, how to get great guests, podcasting through the pandemic, and why waiting until you feel ‘ready’ is the nonsense standing in the way of you launching your own podcast. In this episode:Launching a podcast before the step-by-step guides and purpose built softwareThe ‘secret’ behind almost a decade of successful podcasting How to land brilliant guests (without cold emailing hundreds of strangers)How Alison’s podcast led to an email from Number 10 landing in her inbox...Why confidence isn't something that just arrives…How to change your relationship with confidence and visibilityHow long should a podcast episode be?‘Katie’s Questions’ - she’s got her own jingle and also just happens to ask Alison a great question: what comes after podcasting? The a-pod-calypse *thunder crash* - if you could choose just one podcast to survive the apodcalypse what would it be?Latex babies.A selection of entirely unnecessary sound effects because… well, fun. Alison teaches us that the opportunities that podcasting creates are almost impossible to predict, that ‘done is better than perfect’, and that the more scary things you do, the smaller our comfort zone becomes. We hope you enjoy this episode (because we very much enjoyed making it!)
