Relatively Ordinary

Karl and Betsy

From global headlines to neighborhood happenings to the dinner table — we make sense of the world by talking it through together. Relatively Ordinary is a podcast where Karl and Betsy, a married couple raising kids and building a life together, explore current events and cultural issues with humor, humanity, and a perspective grounded in their everyday lives.

  1. Oct 29

Ep. 37: "Use It Or Lose It"

In the Quick Bite we figure out why clutter sends Betsy over the edge while Karl only melts down when everyone needs something at once. Then Betsy brings a checkup for the brain: the habits that keep it sharp, the tech that might be dulling it, and why "if learning feels easy, it's not learning." It ends somewhere more tender, with Karl wondering who he'll be once the kids don't need him every day.

  2. Oct 5

Ep. 36: "Old Enough to Remember"

Fresh off a marathon relay (and almost $5K raised for the iCan Bike camp), Betsy and Karl take on a topic that's hard to believe is a quarter-century old: September 11th. Betsy was a 19-year-old sophomore in Boston trying to get to organic chemistry; Karl was a 19-year-old co-op in a cubicle farm, hitting refresh on CNN.com. They dig into what changed after that day — the unity, the fear, the TSA, the ugliness — and what they'd want the generation that only knows it from history books to understand. Plus: a Quick Bite on bold moves that reveals who would bungee jump, who would hit on a stranger in a bar, and why being okay looking stupid might be the boldest move of all.

  3. Sep 21

Ep. 35: "Another Trip Around the Sun"

One year, 35 episodes, and (conveniently) one night before our actual 19th wedding anniversary — so we're marking both. Betsy puts Karl through a "Who Said That Shit" lightning round of the show's most unhinged quotes, we go back and grade ourselves against the goals we set in Episode 1, and yes, our favorite episode is the most recent one because we apparently have the memory of goldfish. Plus a few hints at what Year Two might hold, and an overdue reckoning over who actually keeps this whole operation running.

  4. Sep 7

Ep. 34: “The Big Ball of Hopes & Dreams”

Is there one non-negotiable thing a partner has to provide — the kind of thing where nothing else makes up for its absence? Karl digs into the actual research this week: Gottman's bids for connection, the Four Horsemen of divorce, and the newer science of "perceived partner responsiveness," all kicked off by a meme Betsy sent him that may or may not have gotten him a little emotional. Also featuring a paddleboarding standoff with an overly concerned stranger, and a dream Betsy would like stricken from the record.

  5. Aug 19

    Ep. 33: "Splitting the Difference”

Fresh off a Jersey Shore tan and a field hockey redemption tour, Betsy and Karl dig into the thing that makes every relationship, workplace, and government function (or not): compromise. Karl unpacks why it's become a dirty word in national politics, what "power vacuums" do to group decisions at work, and — closer to home — the actual, specific things they've each given up (or refused to) to build a life together. Plus: a very literal power vacuum, a wrong turn on a hike, and the ongoing debate over who actually wears the pants.

  6. Jul 29

    Ep. 32: "True Colors"

This week Karl and Betsy take on the fight over Pride flags happening in towns across the country — prompted by a recent local flag controversy, the death of Lindsey Graham and his "complicated" legacy, and the tail end of Pride Month. They dig into why a piece of fabric can still spark this much heat, what real allyship looks like beyond a rainbow sticker, and why Karl still isn't sold on the parade scene. Plus: Betsy's Quick Bite gets a surprisingly intimate answer that has nothing to do with what you'd expect.

  7. Jul 6

Ep. 31: “Legos, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”

Happy Birthday America! This one opens with a toilet installation and closes with Betsy and Karl threatening revolution via the musket in the family room. Betsy steals a page from Maine Calling's playbook to get Karl on record defining the American Dream — and whether wealth inequality, crushing student debt, and a nation raised on planned obsolescence have quietly killed it. Bonus content: a surprisingly airtight case for Legos solving the housing crisis.

  8. Jun 22

Ep. 30: “No Time Like the Presence”

After a two-and-a-half-week hiatus (and several legitimate excuses), Betsy and Karl dig into presence — why we're so bad at it, whether mindfulness is a luxury only the comfortable can afford, and what it actually looks like to put the phone down and show up. Along the way: World Cup chaos, beer-thirsty Scots overrunning Boston, and a Quick Bite detour into "goblintimacy" that reveals exactly how misanthropic one of them is willing to admit to on a first date. Things get real when they land on the stat that by the time your kid leaves for college, you've already spent 90% of all the in-person time you'll ever get with them — and Betsy hands out a self-graded report card on her own presence that's... let's just say it's not an A.
